The round trip is 1.5 miles. However that leaves out the main story. Almost the entire trail is up and down on slopes of 20 to 40 degrees! Yes once you get to the Outlook they view is amazing. Especially from the elevated vantage point.  The view is probably a 5 star, but the hike is a 1 star. The call it a moderate difficult. I'd call it strenuous.  Overall a 3 star review. Would I return? Bleep No! The mist difficult hike of my life! I was exhausted afterwards. If your a great hiker and love climbing slopes, then this is for you! For anyone with medical difficulties, skip. There are a lot of great views in the area and great trails too!

I'd say this Empire Bluff Trail is one of the best and most efficient hikes to do while exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. After stopping in at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center located right in the town of Empire, MI to get my itinerary organized and speak with a park ranger, I plugged this Empire Bluff Trail into Google Maps and easily drove 1 mile to the parking lot and trailhead. Empire Bluff Trail was my first activity at Sleeping Bear Dunes and was the perfect introduction to the sights and surroundings along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. This hike is 1.5 miles roundtrip and wasn't difficult. A part of the trail goes up and onto a boardwalk. It was from the boardwalk area (maybe 1/3 of a mile into the hike) where I started taking pictures from. The scenery and setting were fantastic. Here I was...just a casual person out among nature in early morning at the end of the month of May and I was quite appreciative to be enjoying the overlook views. I hiked here around 9am and had the entire trail to myself. When not stepping on the boardwalk you're then walking over sand but in no way was it thick or deep as say when you make the iconic Dune Climb trek located further along on the lakeshore. Overall, sitting down on the boardwalk and breathing in the fresh air of Lake Michigan, I did feel far away from reality and had a chance to put into perspective just how grateful I felt to be able to travel and discover new sights and destinations. One unfortunate aspect during my time here (which was obviously out of my control) was the weather being overcast. I could sense looking down upon beautiful Lake Michigan that when the sun is out in full force, the beach shores have potential to make for terrific picture taking opportunities. I actually did get that chance when I hiked at Pyramid Point Trail the following day when the sun finally broke through the clouds. I also suggest hiking Pyramid Point Trail for worthwhile moments to appreciate vista point views. Lastly, the 1.5-mile hike went by pretty quickly. I didn't want the trail to end as I was enjoying myself. From here I then drove 4.5 miles away to the entrance of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive for more time to admire Lake Michigan's coastal shores. This Empire Bluff Trail was one of the worthwhile and memorable hikes I made during my explorations around Sleeping Bear Dunes NL. And especially since it's located right nearby the Visitor Center, I'd recommend stopping on by here as the first activity to do while in the town of Empire.

OK this is hands down the best trail and my favorite part of Sleeping Bear Dunes! I highly recommend that EVERYONE come here and do this hike when you're visiting Sleeping Bear. This is the perfect blend of a moderately challenging hike, but not so long that you get too exhausted, and then the views at the top are SO incredible that it makes the journey up more than worth it! Clocking in at just 1.5 miles out & back, this trail has it all. You go through woods, ascents and descents, sandy parts (but thankfully most of the trail is dirt-based, which makes for easier walking/climbing), breaks in the trees to glimpse the view down below, then arrive at a boardwalk that leads you to the very top with uninterrupted views of Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. You can tack on an additional 3 miles through sandy dunes if you want to continue on from here and hike along the shoreline path as well, but know that the entire time you'll be situated on a bluff, high above the lakeshore, so this trail never gets you down to the lake. The views are truly unbeatable though and my dog & I really enjoyed doing this hike together. Next time and every time from here on out that I'm in the area, I'll definitely be coming here to hike and bringing all my friends to do it too. I hope you really enjoy this hike if you end up trying it out! :)

This is a relatively short trail that takes you the bluffs (duh) overlooking Lake Michigan with a view of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. The trail is well packed dirt for most of the way but boards and boardwalk over sand when you get to the end. Starts going mostly uphill but largely levels out at the end. A nice overlook area but the trails appears to extend for at least a few more miles past the overlook for the more adventurous. Hope to check that out on a future visit. But be wary that a fall or slip down the hill could very easily take you to or near the bottom before you could self arrest, depending upon how you fall. I would be very cautious with children on that part of the trail. We are here during the COVID restrictions, so the trail was not very crowded. I can imagine that the parking lot would be quite full and the trail very busy during the normal summer months. Most people were courteous but there always has to be one jerk who blares his radio and doesn't care who he bothers.

We came across this place as we are traveling from Philly on our family road trip vacation around the Great Lakes. It is a beautiful overlook and can see for what seems to be for miles across Lake Michigan. I did not expect the water to be so blue, tropical blue. This is an easy walk so make sure you make it to the end, you won't regret it. Trail is dog-friendly but there are parts of the trail that are narrow, single file. It is an in and out trail.

Absolutely amazing hike with incredible views! Very easy do able hike for beginners kids and elderly even. Wide path leading to the bluff and you can walk along safely for as long as you'd like. Out and back trail

On our trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes national park we only wanted to do a small hike. When we stopped at the visitor center one of the things they recommend is the Empire Bluff trail. It is a short 1.5 mile walk and something that fairly easy to do. The views at the end were beautiful.

What a beautiful spot. Easy hiking for all skill types. Kids could easily navigate this path as well. The paths are clear and well groomed and the sights are fantastic of Lake Michigan and the dunes :). Dogs are welcome here as well. It is about a mile and a half to the lake shore. Completely beautiful sight to see when you are near Traverse City! Plenty of public parking too!!

I really admired the surroundings and simply looking down upon Lake Michigan's beautiful sand and beaches. Pyramid Point Trail was recommended to me by the park ranger at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center back in the town of Empire, MI. It's a casual 1/2-mile climb to arrive at this observation point. Though...you can hike a 2.7-mile round trip loop around the lakeshores to get a more real feel perspective of being here at Sleeping Bear Dunes rather than just heading straight for this Pyramid Point vista spot. I visited on a random Tuesday back in late May 2021 around 12pm and had the trail and observation point all to myself. So, from high above the waters I was able to hear the waves crashing down below. It was quite nice, and I genuinely appreciated the ambiance. And...I couldn't believe how scenic the turquoise green colors of Lake Michigan appeared especially when highlighted by the sun's strong reflections. Btw...while exploring at Sleeping Bear Dunes I also recommend hiking Empire Bluff Trail and driving the 7.5-mile Pierce Stocking Drive on the outskirts of Lake Michigan. And when traveling along Pierce Stocking Drive, my favorite pullovers were stop numbers 9, 10, 11 to capture the best backdrops for what makes the lakeshore special. Also, don't forget trekking up the 3.5-mile roundtrip Dune Climb to access the beach shores of Lake Michigan. Finally, this Pyramid Point Overlook and Trail was my last full activity here at Sleeping Bear Dubes NL. The crisp, clear background scenery was a terrific way to end my explorations in the Lower Peninsula section of Michigan before venturing further north towards the "UP" driving "Shipwreck Coast" and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore before ultimately ending at Isle Royale National Park. But...I highly suggest hiking the 1/2-mile (each way) Pyramid Point Trail to arrive at this visually appealing overlook!

I left out around 10:30 or so and didn't hit any trails as I had packed some snacks for late but no breakfast. Not much in the way of restaurants or groceries around here so I hit the road. Can't speak to the trails or day use part of the park but the campground and adjacent beach was beautiful.

They do military discount so it was cheaper to come in store than book online. It was very easy coming in and renting. Minimal paperwork and then you go wait for the van to take you to the start. The van was a 5-8 min ride to the start of the river. You go in the van with the other groups who are going. Heads up there is poison ivy where they park the van. But they tell you where and to avoid it. All the staff were very good at telling us things we needed to do and look for on our trip. But incase you got curious little ones, maybe keep them close til they get on the kayak to avoid any poison ivy. We started at 1040 and ended at 1310. So roughly 2.5 hours it took us. They do let 12 and up rent their own kayak I believe or it's 13 and up. I'm glad we did a tandem kayak for my 12 year old daughter. She would have got her self stuck alot with the trees in the river haha. If your child isn't experienced in kayaking I'd do a tandem so you can help them navigate around the trees. There's a lot of fallen trees in the river. But nothing you can't navigate around. I won't lie I did get stuck twice haha. We brought a cooler and a dry bag and they fit on my kayak. It was very fun. We had great weather it was a little cloudy but we preferred that then get beat down with the sun for 2.5 hours. We would definitely come back again!

There were several things that caused this (a huge group in front of us, our kayaks being taken by someone else, more kayaks being shuttled over), but that wasn't the issue. I've kayaked before and have some experience here. The river is not for beginners. I was looking forward to something relaxing, not too technical, but that's not what I got. I had to paddle and maneuver constantly. About 1/2-3/4 of the river is covered in downed trees and logs. The staff say that this makes the river "interactive" and that this is out of their hands. At some points, it felt ridiculous. It got extremely narrow, and when we'd try and navigate around obstacles, the water was so low we'd get stuck on the sandy bottom. A sign at the beginning referenced that the water was at the "middle" level. I can't imagine how it'd be if the water were any lower. We're taking less than a foot in some places. The other person I went with flipped her kayak twice due to debris. Additionally, we saw several people flip and get stranded, especially when using the tandem kayaks. The water is just too low in A LOT of the river. Four people we just happened to bump into just stood up and dragged their kayak since it was easier at certain points. There should also be information about the kayaks utilized. Specs would be helpful. I think beginners wouldn't know what some of the specs mean in some cases, but at least include a weight limit, type, how heavy it is, etc. If you have kids, in my opinion, it's unlikely that they'd be able to move their kayak alone. We also came across locals (at least it seemed like it) who were kayaking and floating the opposite way. This led to more challenges with navigating and more flipping. The portages are also hard to navigate. There are three, which require people to exit, drag their kayak across a path or road, and then reenter. These portages were hard to use, especially while carrying gear and kayaks. One in particular was across a road, which seemed unsafe. There are no staff posted at these sites to assist if needed. The river was gorgeous. The trees, wildlife, views...I loved that part. I wish more information were provided WITH an accurate description given so I could make a proper informed decision about what I was paying for.
