The place boasts authentic Cantonese/Hong Kong style wonton noodle soup with carefully crafted multi-ingredient broth base. As a local Cantonese and die-hard Cantonese food fan I felt like I was obliged to try it out.
Came here during a working day noon and caught them open at 12 pm. Placed my order and waited for about 10 minutes for them to cook on order. The ticket machine was done so the delivery waiter mistook two orders but everything was soon restored back to normal.
Traditional wonton noodle soup: I had the most traditional ingredients, pork and shrimp wonton. The broth base was as delicious as the menu declares. Refreshing savoriness of dried fish and other ingredients, crisp and clear, not oily at all. Noodles were the traditional Cantonese "raw noodles" (生面), small threads rolled in flour infused with eggs. for those who were familiar with northern Chinese noodles it might be on the "chewy" side of things, but for me it had the necessary bouncy, slightly rubbery, texture. Wonton had generous stuffing, the shrimp tasted bouncy and fresh, the pork was standard, and the flour wrapping was infused with eggs as well. The wrapping was slightly on the tough side, but acceptable.
Still I must mention, even for someone like me who were used to the light flavor and seasoning of Cantonese cuisine, the whole bowl tasted quite light, borderline bland. In Canton/Hong Kong, we usually had chili sauce and other seasonings like vinegar, soy sauce, white pepper, and/or salt on table for customers to add on, but the place had none of those. I had to ask for a small cup of chili sauce. With that, the taste was instantly lifted. I wish they had all those ready for use for all customers.
Chicken congee with fried dough stick: I had to finish the wonton noodles before working on it, so to be fair it was not that cold and thick when first served. That said, the congee overall was on the gritty and thick side, with the rice beads melting but not thoroughly integrating with the watery component. The chicken portion was a bit smaller than expected. I also wish the fried dough stick could be larger and fresher, right now it tasted like pre-made stuff from a large batch order.
Overall: 4 stars. I could recommend the wonton noodles but they might want to work on improving the congee. I also strongly wish they could have chili sauce and other seasonings provided on the table. read more
