No fancy décor, no overdone plating--just honest, soul-warming food the way abuelita would make it. We ordered a few pupusas revueltas and they were thick, cheesy, and crispy at the edges--just how you want 'em. Each bite was loaded with flavor, and they didn't skimp on the fillings either (respectfully, some of y'all out there are serving tortillas with trust issues). The curtido came bagged up and packed with crunch and tang--exactly what you need to cut through that melted cheese goodness. Prices are humble, portions are generous, and while it may be a small spot, the flavors are huge. Whether you're a pupusa purist or just learning what curtido even is--this little cafeteria deserves a big spot on your food map. Bonus points: you'll leave full, happy, and maybe even planning your return trip before you've finished your last bite.

The Honduras Café and Carriel Bar sits in a brightly-colored blue building with the traditional yellow, blue, and red stripes found at most Colombian restaurants. Since Honduran cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, Caribbean and African dishes, you can expect to see a lot of your Latin favorites mixed in with more traditional Honduran food. Typical Honduran food includes fried fish, tamales, carne asada and baleadas (a flour tortilla which is folded in half and filled with refried beans, quesillo or cheese and sour cream) . Other popular dishes include meat roasted with chismol (similar to a sofrito sauce), chicken with rice and corn, and fried fish with pickled onions and jalapeños. In the coastal areas and in the Bay Islands, seafood and some meats are prepared with coconut milk. The walls of the Honduras Café are decorated with a series of beautiful photomurals showcasing the countryside of Honduras, and the crystal clear waters of the Bay Islands. There's a pool table on the right which is a big draw with the locals. To the left is the café area with about a dozen tables, and a small bar in the corner. I ordered a couple of beef empanadas for my lunch, and an order of carne asada estilio Honduras to have later for my dinner. The empanadas had a rich, savory flavor, and when combined with hot sauce they were the perfect size for lunch. The Honduran carne asada is a traditional dish, similar to steak and potatoes, with fried plantains on the bottom of the plate, then shredded cabbage, onions, tomatoes, shredded strips of beef, and creamy garlic sauce on top. This is a very delicious dish, and well worth a try. Spanish is the preferred language in this small restaurant, but if you make the effort to learn a few basic phrases they will very happily help you with your order. I thought that the food was tasty, and will be back to try some other dishes.

My fiancée grew up in this area and has her favorites and places she does not like, but surprisingly many places she has never tried. For months and months we have passed by this small, colorful Honduran restaurant and it always catches my eye as we drive by. Unfortunately most of the time we have already eaten. So a few weeks ago we finally had the chance to stop in on a Sunday for lunch. From the outside the restaurant is easy to spot being painted the blue and white of the Honduran flag accented with red and gold. Pictures of Honduran dishes are displayed on the windows and bars cover the doors, but don't let that stop you. Inside the blue and white theme continues with a tropical scene on the back wall welcoming diners to Honduras. Like most of the restaurants along this stretch of Armenia the atmosphere is mom and pop casual. The menu is not as long in offerings as places like Pequeña Colombia of La Casona but still with plenty of choices. My fiancée ordered the Baleada Todo, a Honduran breakfast sandwich consisting of a thick tortilla stuffed with beans, fresh avocado slices, queso fresco, crema, and steak. The beans accounted for much of the flavor, almost like well seasoned refried beans only creamier. I ordered the Desayuno Completo which featured steak, two eggs, fresh avocado slices, beans, queso fresco, crema, and two tortillas. In essence it was the same dish was my fiancée only deconstructed. It was good but lacked the punch of the seasoning found in Colombian food. The best part of the meal was an order of Pupusa con Chicharrón. This was my first time trying these amazingly tasty stuffed tortillas filled with cheese and pork skin. They are similar to Colombian arepa, only stuffed and in my opinion even better. They were served with pickled shredded cabbage and lettuce and a sauce that was a bit like flavor butter. I truly fell in love with this dish and would come back for it alone. Overall the food was good but lacked the excitement of Colombian or Peruvian food. I would give it another go but I will seek out other venues along Armenia in the mean time.

At the end, one lady came with a portable card reader without even bringing a bill first -- she just said 'it's $93.' When we asked for the check, they took a long time to come back. When she finally did, she gave us $5 back saying she had overcharged for the pupusas. However, after reviewing the prices listed on the menu, the total was still incorrect. I pointed it out, and she admitted the system prices are different and not updated to match the menu, but said she couldn't do anything about it. I reminded her they should honor menu prices, but she simply said 'yes, but I can't.' Very unprofessional and honestly felt sneaky. We will not be returning. Make sure to double-check your bill carefully! No volveremos. Asegúrese de revisar bien su cuenta antes de pagar.
