A relative had a poor experience in the past so our loved one did NOT want to hear the word Hospice. However, the SW spoke about "end of life" which did not go over well with my Mom. Palliative Medicine saw our loved one at Golden Living NH (they were EXCELLENT) and stated it was time for hospice. I have worked with Hospice of the Western Reserve on many occasions as a healthcare professional and was always pleased with the service. Hospice was called in on an emergent basis the same day the referral was placed. In fact, the admission Nurse stopped her paperwork & assessment to care for Mom and educate the staff. She was an excellent Nurse and explained everything in detail. She had a strong knowledge and skill base. I recommend them highly. Mom was treated with dignity and respect until her last breathe.

It was exactly where she would have wanted to be. However, she lost consciousness at the hospital and never woke again to participate in the decision. Mom was transferred here after a horrible experience at St John's Hospital. Please read it if you ever would consider choosing to go there. It will change your mind. Anyways, we were so glad to make the drive here, knowing it was a beautiful place - especially compared to the hospital. We had had to wait for a room to become available = that's how preferred it is for ending life. Mom's stay here was so very much like Dad's - almost eerie. Both were transferred from a hospital and arrived on a Friday. We were in a different wing this time and the set up was simply perfect for the large number of family members keeping vigil. Mom had a room with her bed and several chairs. And the staff brought enough folding chairs so we all could sit together at times. There was also a little lounge-like room 2 doors down where we could take a break and also grab a nap. Mom had a TV in her room and we all gathered to watch an OSU football game. She would have loved it. (Of course, OSU won). My brother and I were the only ones who spent the first night. He slept in the lounge chair in her room. I found a soft near the front door. Family joined us with coffee and breakfast and we gathered in the kitchen area. We also had my one niece's in-laws stop by and give their support. We spent the day keeping each other and Mom company. The facility has plenty of common areas with seating - but we mainly stuck to our 2 rooms. There are also shower facilities that I finally used after several days without a shower - between here and the hospital. The only complaint I have is the difficulty coming and going. I had to run out to the store and told the lady watching the door I'd be right back. I was gone a little over 30 minutes. You have to be buzzed in which I understand, but she made me sign in all over again and acted like she never saw me before. Also, there is no way to get in at night as no one answers the door bell or knocking. We figured out quickly to let each other in and out the side doors signaling with text messages our returns. My sis in law, older niece, brother and I stayed over Saturday night. It was early Sunday morning that Mom died. She last one hour longer into the early morning than Dad did. We had to wait over an hour for the funeral home to come. Then we said our last good byes as Mom wanted to be cremated. It was a blessing in the end - but still very sad. Mom was 89 - less than a week from being 90. She led a full life and had lost quality of life by the end - so it was time for her to go. Ames provide a comfortable place with beautiful, caring people working there. They were so good to Mom -and also to Dad. They treated our parents with respect - as if they were their own parents. I can honestly say - if I can't die at home, I would choose to die in a wonderful place like this. But most importantly, it allowed Mom to die surrounded by the people who loved her most.

I felt I could use a break and have my husband observed by professionals. So I opted for 5 day respite, packed clothes for him. Big mistake that I regret. My husband was walking and talking when he left. 5 days later when I visited I hardly recognized him. He had gone downhill in 5 days, could not speak coherently, laying in a hospital bed. He had on a hospital gown. The aides I observed were slow, did not know how to operate the bed. I believe he was sedated. He told me first day food was awful. Understaffed. They wanted to keep him another day. Doctor advised he was in bad shape ...yah he was 95 and had numerous issues. Doc recommended a VA nursing home. Said no way, I want him home. He came home, could not walk, continued to go downhill, and died in 10 days. I thought he would get attention from docs and nurses. They never dressed him or walked him around. If he tried to go to the bathroom, a loud alarm went off and he had to have help. So disappointed in Hospice Western Reserve. They don't live up to their reputation.

The nursing staff was responsive to his every need and checked on him frequently. The pastoral care he received was equally wonderful. Sister Margaret Mary, in particular, was so warm and loving toward him, and I was touched by her kindness. I'm sure she brought him much comfort! In addition, I was pleasantly surprised by how the staff took such good care of my family and I while we kept vigil in my dad's room. Between my brother, my mom and myself, we never left his side on the weekend he passed. The staff saw to it that I had a pillow and blanket to keep me comfortable while I slept there overnight, and they also brought me a phone charger when I needed it. One day, a staff member cooked my mom a grilled cheese sandwich just for her, because she knew she needed to eat. They promised us they would do anything they could for us, and they certainly did! When my dad passed away, we were all given a hug by our wonderful nurse, and given reassurance that he was no longer in pain. I could tell that one of the other nurses present was fighting back tears, which touched me, as well, knowing that I was not alone in my grief. I really just can't say enough good things about the wonderful people working there who make it their mission to provide comfort and care to their patients and their families. And the facility, itself, is beautiful, clean, and well-maintained. Nobody wants to have to bring their loved one to a hospice, but if you should find yourself looking for a facility to provide palliative care for your family member, you really couldn't ask for a place better than Holy Family.

Our regular nurse, Megan, was wonderful. She was so incredibly caring and helpful - whether working with my father or my family. She took as much time as needed, and never made us feel like she was rushing. Megan was such a wonderful help to my mother during my family's most difficult time. That said, the last 24 hours of my father's life were absolutely miserable. He was in extreme pain and my mother called the phone number, as she was directed to do. Several hours went past. My father was in the worst agony of his life. Finally, after more waiting, they located a nurse. It's worth noting that there wasn't a bad storm or anything to create a major delay. When the nurse finally arrived, she repeatedly complained about how cold it was and that she had to get out of bed to come to my family's house. My ex husband is a nurse practitioner and he would never pass along that information to the family. My mom ended up crying and feeling guilty for having this employee come out late at night (because it took so long to get ahold of someone). I still don't understand why it was okay for him to lay there in extreme agony for so long. As this was happening, their "social worker" was there to help my mom - except she didn't help. She also told my mom I was eligible for FMLA. I reached out to my workplace about this, and New York state has a better policy for paid time off than Ohio, so I submitted the paperwork. It's been almost two weeks and they can't manage to fill in ONE PAGE. When I asked how should I handle paying bills, the social worker said "someone else" could pay my bills or I can worry about it later. Super helpful. She also giggled a ton during our phone calls (I understand nervous laughter but she asked how my mom is and a few questions about my family with sad answers, and she giggled. Super weird and hurtful to me.) The company handling my pay for this time period told me that they have never worked with someone so inept at filling in one simple page (it doesn't help that the employee gave me the wrong information more than once). I just received a call from a supervisor who said he would try to help. When I brought up the issue with the long wait time, he let me know that isn't how they do things and he wants to "make it right". How do you make it right when my father died?

Just an incredible place, everyone was so caring that a friend of mine was dying, and walked out of…read morethe hospice. They have just built a new addition which was handled in such a creative, thoughtful way -- residents' lives remained normal and calm despite construction. Plus, it is beautiful! Most important, I am thrilled with the level of care, concern and genuine affection/compassion the staff provides and exhibits toward my mother, as well as the other residents. Patience, understanding, creativity and sense of family are very evident whether a resident's family member is present or not. Nurses and caregivers have gone out of their way to meet my mother's needs and mine as well -- so I'd don't need to guess how she is doing. They share anecdotes of what she's said or done during the day; if she's happy, sad; ate well/or not so well; was up all night or slept well -- without my asking. This is very important to me as her primary caregiver. They are truly extensions of me and do it better than I ever could at this point in her journey. We are both blessed to have found such a wonderful place for her to live.
