I have worked very closely with Aaron Lewis, now at Santa Cruz Staffing, for over 7 years now,…read morestarting when I was working at the Capitola Career Center and Aaron was a recruiter across the parking lot at Manpower. Our relationship continued through his time at Threshold, Bay Photo, Fox, and into Santa Cruz Staffing. His direct experience at different companies gives him insight into the unique nature of the Santa Cruz business community. If I were looking for a job myself, looking to hire someone, or trying to help someone get hired, Aaron would be my go to guy. He is very creative and easy to work with. Aaron has a talent for working with everyone ranging from someone looking for their first job, to someone who is in mid-career, or even someone going for that top level, executive position. I know of an instance recently where he was working with someone who was looking for their first job, was very shy, and had a hard time putting herself out there for interviews. Aaron coached her to build up her self confidence and land that first job very quickly. Jobseekers: Aaron will help you target your resume for a specific position or company, coach you on how to prepare for interviews, and how to present yourself as the very best candidate you can be. Employers: Aaron will help you find the right person for your opening. I've seen him solve some very challenging recruiting problems, finding just the right person for a unique position. Santa Cruz Staffing has always been my favorite agency in the Santa Cruz area (I can say that now; as a former government employee, we weren't supposed to show favoritism). Aaron is great, recruiting par excellence.
My experience with Santa Cruz Staffing has been nothing short of excellent. I quit my last job…read moreafter 6 years because I needed a change of pace and wanted to expand my skill set. I sent an initial inquiry email to them in early December, and I heard back to take proficiency tests and schedule an appointment with them on the 10th. My appointment was on the 17th where I got to know Ellen who gave me some invaluable advice, resume review, and a pep talk with the enthusiasm that I only wish I could have had for finding myself a job, let alone for someone else. On the 19th I heard that I had a phone interview for the 23rd. That went well and I started work on the 26th. I'm throwing all these dates out for a reason. From the time I initially made contact to the time I actually started a job was a mere 16 days. And I had a meeting with them within 7 to actually start the process. This was an INCREDIBLE turnaround time for someone who has been applying to jobs non-stop for the past 3 months with little to no word back from any. I got feedback on my resume and interview skills that have undoubtedly increased my chances at getting hired again in the future, whether through them or on my own. They are incredibly kind and supportive, and genuinely want to find work for you. A large number of the positions they get are temp-to-hire so you can go in with a relatively stable outlook, and if a job isn't working out for you or doesn't fit your skill set, they are happy to help you find something else that works better for you. They want to get you working, and have you be satisfied with it, and you can tell they care from the moment you walk in. I look forward to working with them more in the future if I should need other employment, and I cannot recommend them enough.

First, paper in landfills does not degrade well. 2nd would be all the resources wasted printing something that is not read or used. 3rd would be the use of their "delivery" numbers to infulence advertisers to purchase ads. And lastly is the frustration of having to throw 2 copies away every time they are delivered. I do not read this paper ever. It goes straight to the bin, hopefully to be recycled, but probably not due to ink and paper used. Bulk mailing is such an issue that my local post office took out all their recycling bins, as they would overflow everyday. Bulk mailing was never intended to provide "free" subscribers to a paper to bulk up their distribution numbers. It is a deplorabel waste of resources, time and energy.

I contacted the Banner to have my name change published and gave them all required credit card and documental information. Two weeks later, I discoverd that my credit card had not been charged and that the Banner had never run my time sensitive publication. I contacted the Banner and was informed that my name change would publish in time for my court date which was now 4 weeks away. I was also ensured that a hard copy of the newspaper with the add publication would be mailed to my home address for my reference. The hard copy was never mailed my way, the Banner never sent Proof of Publication to the court house by my court date, a copy of the Proof of Publication was never emailed to me before my court date, my phone calls were never returned. I had no way of knowing if my name had actually been published. I traveled to Scotts Valley to locate a copy of the paper and discovered, at that point, that they had indeed published my name change. I followed up with the Banner after my court date had passed to discuss my experience with having a name change published with their paper. I was told they were a small paper, but could refund me partially and resend a copy of the Proof of Publication email my way. The woman in charge of running the name change publication, ensured that it had been sent my way on time and acknowledged that she had listened to my messages, specifically remembering me as the woman "freaking out". I never did receive that refund or the Proof of Publication email. Skip this experience, take your business to another paper. To add, I just received an $80 bill from the Press Banner in the mail. They were paid in full last month before the publication went out. I had to send a copy of my credit card statement and emails proving I paid in full to their accounting department. I couldn't be more dissatisfied with their lack of attention throughout this entire process.

Santa Cruz, while not nearly so big (thankfully), has been growing and while GPS may not be necessary just yet, a magazine such as Santa Cruz Magazine will be more than helpful in telling you what's going on in this charming beach city. Published four times a year, it offers hints and tips as to where the best eateries and artist's studios are; where to sample the local wines and cheeses; and where to rent that surfboard to ride a few waves in this northern version of "Surf City" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Cruz,_California). Describing itself as a "magazine with a conscience", you can be assured that the team that puts pen to paper here know what they're talking about. Pick up a copy or subscribe and see for yourself. See why when you think of Santa Cruz, you picture that rare gem of a town right on the coast between the major population hubs of San Francisco and Los Angeles. It's a youthful place of unique beauty between the surf and the redwoods chock full of things to do, places to see and things to write about. And the photography... There are few places as beautiful as this area and Santa Cruz Magazine has it covered. Click on the most recent issue and flip through the pages. I have noticed that since their new editor came on last summer the quality of the stories has improved. They always have great local stories, and they're not afraid to throw in a little bit of humor and not take themselves too seriously. I've never been even remotely offended by anything they say (and I would consider myself pretty moderate) but if they do sometimes ruffle the feathers of a few people, well, so what? People don't need to take themselves so seriously. It's a physically beautiful paper, too, with a great layout, glossy paper and beautiful colors. I 100% prefer it to Good Times - their ink rubs off on my fingers. I highly recommend - a great guide to what to do and what's going on in SC.
