We were driving to the Homer Spit from Soldotna to do some Halibut fishing and made a stop here at this overlook. The panoramic views of Kachemak Bay and the mountains in the background are just gorgeous from here. At this overlook is a small park called Baycrest Park that you can walk around and enjoy. There are beautiful flower beds all around, restrooms and a gazebo that functions as an information center with brochures that you can take to help plan your trip. Homer is known as the Halibut fishing capital of the world. I had a great time fishing there and glad we made a stop at this viewpoint along the way. Baycrest Overlook Park is located right off of Sterling Highway and totally worth a quick stop if you have a few minutes to spare. read more

MAGICAL VIEWS As you drive into Homer, Alaska, do not miss this great spot for a panoramic view of Kachemak Bay at the Cook Inlet. From here you can see: Augustine Volcano Coal Bluff Redoubt Volcano Chinitna Bay Bishops Beach Peterson Bay Homer Spit Tutka Bay Sadie Peak Sixty Foot Rock Yukon Island Cohen Island Port Graham Kachemak Bay Shelikof Straight Katmai National Park Iliamna Volcano China Poot Bay Plus you might catch some aquatic life like sea birds, eagles, sea otters, whales, etc. There is a telescope up here which is free to use. Typically scenic places like this will charge you a quarter or two to use the telescope, so this is a deal. There is a bathroom as well as a information booth which wasn't open when I visited. In fact, it directed me to visit the info booth in town, so I am not sure if this one is ever open. We also met the famous award winning artist called "Spoon Man". I am not sure how famous he is considering this is the first time I ever met or heard of him. He did have some cool spoons. His spoons were carved by hand from wood that was not native to Alaska. He was using reclaimed wood that might have washed up on shore or a broken piano leg. He had some interesting stories about each spoon. He was also hand carving canes from native Alaskan wood, so if you need a cane this is the place to visit. My Dad bought a purple basil plant from "Spoon Man", which he the hand carried all the way back to Sicily. Only my Dad would do something like this and you may wonder why I have a culinary background. My whole life has been surrounded by food whether growing it, picking it, cooking it or eating it. This is a must stop. As you are driving into Homer please make sure you take some time to visit this great vista for some amazing photos. There is plenty of parking and it never seems to get very crowded. You are now in Alaska and it is time to take in the beauty of the land. read more
