What keeps me loyal to this shop is the friendliness and helpfulness of the owners. They give good advice and do not automatically steer customers to the most expensive options. This shop is off the beaten path but well worth a visit, especially during spring and autumn when they stock a lot of plants. It was a year before I ever entered this store after relocating to East Oxford; now I wish I hadn't waited that long - this place is a gem.

It doesn't look like much from Cowley Road but when you go in, there is a full-blown timber merchant with a large shop selling tools, ironmongery etc. They have a full wood machining workshop so can cut and plane to size and the prices are really good. You can also go in and talk about what you think you need, and they will give you suggestion and ideas on how to do things quicker, cheaper and more robustly. You can buy single or multiple screws, in just about every size and thread, and everything i've ever needed has been in stock - from bird food to cable to key cutting and paint. They cut pieces of wood to specific dimensions for a small amount of money, and this makes most things much easier. They work in both metric and imperial measurements. It is a great place for whatever odds and ends you may ever need.

They have a relatively good range of things, though if you really need something specific, you should go to a real hardware store. I'm having my first experience with their ability to deliver an online-only order, and it has so far been completely negative. I ordered a cabinet online on 27 April and the scheduled delivery date was already quite late at 17 May. The people they use (PJH Group) had a break-down of the truck yesterday, the scheduled delivery date, and so couldn't complete the delivery. I had planned to stay home all day and wait, and did so - and they only notified me at 6 pm that they weren't going to be able to complete the delivery. Now, they have only been able to reschedule for more than a week later, 28 May, which is over a month after the original order date. I'm totally unimpressed with B&Q's ability to deliver their online-only goods - based on my one experience so far, and on an experience a friend of mine had with doors she ordered which took weeks and several failed delivery attempts to arrive. Obviously they need to find another delivery company, and I will be going to a competitor in future for any more online-only orders.

As examples, they sell balloon cars and different types of whistles; they sell Japanese gardening boots; they sell razors, chisels, and knives; and they sell carbon-steel and cast-iron cookware, among many other things. My partner is a marine biologist, and I bought her a Kujira Sperm Whale knife, which blacksmith Toru Yamashita made with no points so kids can safely sharpen pencils. The store itself is also minimal and clean; the staff, very helpful. I missed it a few times when I first started exploring Oxford because I went down Market Street to duck into The Covered Market. Objects of Use is just a bit past the Market Street entrances of The Covered Market if one approaches from Cornmarket Street. This is the only location, which surprised me, as a number of stores, restaurants, and cafes in Oxford are satellites of larger enterprises in London. This really is a type of store one would expect to find in London or New York, and yet the only one is right here in Oxford.
