My father was in the hospital and had been diagnosed with dementia. I had 24 hours before Medicaire coverage ended for the hospital stay, and needed to find a way to care for my father (since I lived in another state). Almost every inpatient facility had a waiting list. I discovered Home Instead, and after researching them decided that they could help my father stay in his home for a while. It has been 5 months since HI has been providing 24 live-in care for my father. I have visited (without giving advance notice) and observed the care he receives, and can say without reservation that all the people I have come in conact with at HI are professional and well-trained, and have given my father the best care I can imagine (or expect). Just the other day Dad's caregiver called me because a doctor had prescribed a medication that (even the doctor admitted) may or may not have any effect on helping Dad's memory, and the pharmacy called to say that it would cost (after insurance coverage) over $600 (for a 3 month supply). I appreciated his checking with me before spending my father's money on unnecessary medication. I have used this Home Instead office, as well as the San Bruno office, for the care of my aging mother for several years. My Mom is not an easy case as she suffers from Major Depressive Disorder. The last two plus years, we have had 24/7 care, in her home. Every caregiver she has had has been loving and kind to her. In the rare case when she and a caregiver do not click, a change is made in a very timely fashion. The agency staff has been professional, and, the supervisory staff has gone above and beyond in trying to assist my Mom, and, encourage her in every way possible. When an emergency has arisen, they have been responsive, and, I am always contacted immediately by the agency Director. As a retired police officer, I feel safe in saying that criminal background checks are done PRIOR to hiring a caregiver. If an employee is arrested after being hired, the agency is likely never contacted. THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE AGENCY ITSELF. Common sense should always prevail, when caregivers are in your home, and, Home Instead literature clearly advises potential clients to keep all valuable items in a safe place. This review is written for my mother in-law. If you would like a warm body to occupy space, this is the company for you! In March of 2018 we needed hospice services for my husband, Home Instead was recommended by Kaiser. The first caregiver that came, Ronald 8pm-8am was very good. Attended to my husband, giving him medications and making him comfortable, grooming/cleaning him. After he left it all went down hill. We had 4 caregivers in 3 days. The second caregiver, Alona 12:30pm-12:30am, she was on the phone the whole time, refused to groom/clean my husband saying that wasn't part of her job, however under duress she ASSISTED my daughter in cleaning her father, she also refused to give him medication, again it wasn't in her job description. Her "shift" ended. The next caregiver, Crisana 12:30am-8am, slept her entire "shift" because "she had another job to go to" and needed the rest, again she only cleaned my husband up after we insisted. Final caregiver, Fredes 8am-5pm, walked into my house, saw the kitchen walked to the fridge put her lunch in without so much as a hello. When it was time for her break she again walked into my kitchen got her lunch heated it up, sat at my table and ate. After lunch apparently it was time for an after meal nap. All of this, without a single word to myself or my daughter. She also would not clean or administer help to my husband physically. My husband passed that very day. All of these caregivers, with the exception of Ronald, did not CARE for my husband, they simply just were warm bodies in the room. Now I understand maybe that's what the purpose is however on their website it states.... Personal care Emotional support Companionship Housekeeping Reading aloud Grooming and dressing Linen changes Respite for family caregivers During a time when a family is dealing with great amounts of sorrow and pain, in my opinion, to have to deal with incompetency and neglect of a dying human is cruel. My daughters and I were not in emotional place to deal with such a lack of care and compassion for my husband, let alone acknowledge what was actually happening. read more

Sylvia Salvador, caregiver through HomeInstead took excellent care of our mother. Our mother transitioned from her stay in nursing and rehab and needed assistance at home. I contacted Josie at HomeInstead and upon request of our mother, asked for Sylvia Salvador who has previously taken care of our mother. Sylvia has been a trusted caregiver in the past - it is not easy to let go of a loved one during the day to go back to work and she has been a compassionate companion. Sylvia assisted our mother getting dressed for the day, bathing, prepared her meals and took her through her exercise regimen. We are truly grateful for the compassion and care at this time of recovery for our mother. read more

My mother had pacemaker surgeries (4 of them due to complications) and thus was very weak and lost her mobility. After her discharge from rehabilitation hospital, we engaged HI to help with her recovery and give our family the peace of mind. My contact was Josie Vicera, who was very helpful and came to visit my parent's home to make recommendations that would help with her recovery. The two different helpers were very conscientious and worked with my mother on her physical and occupational therapy exercises. They are very caring. I would use them again and recommend to others in the same position. read more

Our experience with Home Instead has been great! My Mom has 24-hour support and primary care giver Bella, is there five days a week. She has become very close to my Mom and vice versa. Home Instead supervisor Karen has been excellent at communicating any changes or updates. They made a special effort to celebrate my Mom's 99th birthday with several members of their team taking the time to visit and give presents. My Mom is not easy to please, but not says she could not do without Bella. Bella treats her as if she was her own Mom. read more

It has taken me quite awhile to write this. I wish it didn't, but after my Papa passed away, I wasn't in a good place. It will be a year since he passed away in October, but I will forever be grateful for Home Instead, their caregivers & nurses & staff! Everyone I talked to were so nice & compassionate. They were with my grandpa 24/7 for almost 2 months. Night & day helping him with everything he needed help with. Jennifer set everything up & made sure we were taken cares of. She would call just to check up on how he was doing, how I was doing! Mary, Chary & Grace were the main caregivers helping us out & I couldn't have been happier with the care they gave him. It was like they really did love him & that made me feel very good!! That he was well taken care of. I really don't know what I would have done without Home Instead. Thank you all for taking such amazing care of my Papa, I will never forget it & if you need extra help... keep them in mind. They went out to their way for our family & I wish it hadn't taken me so long to write this, but give them a call if you need help. Truly. My mom was independent at 86 until a horrible case of shingles that lasted over 6 months required someone to help her with bathing and other home tasks. Home Instead sent a woman that was very efficient and helpful. She has been with Mom for 2 1/2yrs now and is her friend. As we needed more care, it took a while to find a new caregiver that my mom liked, but they did find another one to increase the daily hours for her. We have been very satisfied with the response to calls, requests for change of schedule and overall attention. read more

I had Home Instead for my Aunt who required 24/7 care for over seven years. We had three dedicated caregivers during the seven years: Lilly, Angelina and Jocelyn. I cannot say enough positive things about these three. You would think that their care and concern was for a member of their own family. We had additional caregivers who would fill in on days off for the three primaries. The last of who was Elana and she too was excellent. Supervisory personal would make regular drop in visits to ensure all was going well. Whenever a relief caregiver was sent that we were not comfortable with supervisors were responsive to our concerns and a replacement was found. When my husband became ill one year ago, I got the referral to Home Instead from Kaiser, and I found their home health aides to be extremely caring and personable. They were dedicated to making my husband as comfortable as possible, and they were extremely conscientious. Sandy Sparkman, as the manager of the services we received matched our needs with her talented staff of home health aides. It was due to Tricia's alertness to my husband's symptoms that we took him to the emergency room, and his final hours were spent comfortably, surrounded by family. Other workers who stand out in my mind are David, Carline, Alvin and Sophia. I would recommend Home Instead without reservation to families needing home health assistance. read more

We hired Home Instead of San Mateo to help us take care of my 88 year old mother with advanced alzheimer's. We asked that the caregiver help her wash herself, and do some light housekeeping (such as change the sheets on her bed, clean the bathroom once/week) and feed mom breakfast and lunch. One of us came every night for dinner. The woman we got was the laziest woman I ever met. All she did all day was sit and read a magazine. Mom is perfectly ambulatory and loves to walk outside, but the caregiver never took her out once. She sat and ate a granola bar every day for lunch and mom hardly are anything the whole time she was there. The disasterous result was that mom ended up in the hospital and nearly died. We fired them immediately. We went to Care Connection and now have had the same caregiver for more than 1 year. She is great and probably the reason mom is approaching her 90th birthday. I don't recommend Home Instead at all! read more
