I was pleased with how she was treated. I was particularly impressed with dealing with the social worker office who advised me of her insurance coverage. She received quality care during her 20 day visit. Dining for the guests is very nice. Many residents eat in their room but my friend chose to eat in the Bistro dining room. She made friends quickly and on severely occasions I had lunch or dinner myself there and was required as a guest to pay nominal fee but the servers told they couldn't accept a gratuity. The staff was always pleasant and patient with the guests.

It was much less that I had hoped for and even less for what I'd expected. In no particular order I will give details of the horrors you might expect. Keep in mind that for an older person with terminal issues this might have been much better, but I was probably the youngest in the facility and only needed P.T., not nursing. I had a multiple-occupancy room (read semi-private, two patients) that had a TV each but both TVs were controlled with the same coded remote. When I would turn mine off or on or changed the channel or volume level, his would change, too, and vice-versa. It had a bathroom much smaller that any Motel 6 I'd even been in. It had belt-sander quality toilet paper. And there was no shower... only a bi-weekly schedule to go down to the "spa" always with a nurse or assistant who did their best impression of Nurse Rachet (controlling the shower hose, freezing temps, dumping handfuls of shampoo on my hair, all while seated in one of their rolling PVC shower seats. I am not a xenophobe, but when all of the staff speaks loud Creole in your presence and only barely try to speak English when they address you, I find it disturbing and off-putting. The P.T. "gym" looked more like an adult kindergarten, including match-the-shape games. The silicone rubber bands they used for muscle-strengthening made me think that I was in Joe's Garage and Kindergarten. The staff seemed more interested in whistling to 80's tunes or talking about their next meal plans than focusing on the P.T. The entire facility reminded me of a stalog; it took the door code of the day to exit a door to the outside. This might be effective against dementia patients wandering off, but I was clearly with all of my senses and it would have been nice to sit for awhile outdoors listening to the quite sounds of traffic... It took the kitchen/nutrition staff 9 days to finally get my food orders correct. I make the majority of my meals fresh and raw. So instead of blindly opting in for the lemmings' fare of heated canned food, I spent entirely too much time getting them to make me salads and sandwiches. And why are we still wearing traditional hospital gowns? It made more sense back when most of our medicines were hypodermics in the buttocks, but they have got to go. They provide no protection, they never fit, and the ties get knotted up. My assigned doctor was on vacation when I was admitted and never returned during my 10-day visit. Their inter-departmental communications were horrible, with me often repeating the same set of information to many staff members who should have shared it. I hope this will guide you towards selecting a better nursing home/rehab experience than I had.

I'm going to preface this review with a back story so you can see a comparison…read more My grandfather was in the dreaded Cape Coral Hospital for over three weeks. He was taken in by ambulance on a Thursday, was diagnosed with colon cancer the following Saturday, and had surgery the following Monday. Except for the days leading up to the surgery and the two times he was in ICU, he was treated like crap - as was my grandmother. There was barely any communication at all; they actually YELLED at my grandmother one time when they had to change his diaper; they wouldn't have physical therapy come down to try and get him out of his bed until my aunt called from Miami and made threats; he had to wait over TWO HOURS to get his pain medications on several occasions; and on and on it goes. He was NOT treated with dignity and neither was the family. Then he was transferred to the Cape Coral Hope Hospice. IMMEDIATELY we could feel the difference and knew this is EXACTLY where he needed to be. The doctors and nurses not only spent ample time with my grandfather, but they did with my grandmother and all of us, as well. It was as if we had entered a new realm of health care! Grandma was kept 100% up to date on EVERYTHING that was going on with him and that, OF COURSE, helped put her at ease. There were other awesome experiences, too. The staff shared about the death/dying process as well so we would all be prepared for what was to come. They told us amazing stories of people who had passed on in beautiful ways. They, along with the kindest and most compassionate chaplain EVER, took time out of THEIR busy days to make sure we were reassured, in awe of the passage from life to new life, at peace (as much as we could be), and knew that Grandpa would go when he was ready and in a dignified manner. They ensured he was comfortable and wasn't agitated, unlike the hospital. One of the nurses even sat with him and held his hand for awhile. That same nurse teased me about looking exactly like my mother and when I told her I was the favorite grandchild she wrote it on Grandpa's board. That probably sounds stupid, but that small silliness put me at ease and brought small joy to difficult moments. As for the place itself, it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The gardens are lovely and you can sit outside in peace and quiet and simply reflect or cry or do whatever your body/mind/emotions need you to do. The inside has about a million very comfortable chairs and the food they have to eat is very good. I think of Hope Hospice as about 35% for the dying and 65% for the living. You know that you're going to lose your loved one, but the atmosphere is one of peace and even....well, I suppose serenity. I want to add this - my grandfather just passed away 10 days ago, so my experiences are still very, very fresh. Therefore, I'm not giving a review that's through rose-tinted glasses. I just thought you should know that. My grandmother REALLY connected with the chaplain there. She loved speaking with him and hearing what he had to say. Grandpa's funeral was in Sarasota and Grandma mentioned in passing that she really wished he could do the funeral ceremony. Well, my aunt called and spoke with him and he said he'd be honored to do so. He drove all the way up to Sarasota and held a beautiful service for my grandfather and brought a TON of comfort to my grandmother. I will never, ever forget that. Hospice is a scary word for people to hear and a lot of times people allow their loved ones to die in a nursing home, in the hospital, or at home instead of hospice because of that fear. If I could recommend just ONE THING, it would be to just visit Hope Hospice one time and talk to the nurses and doctors and others. Explore the grounds. See and feel the peace and dignity that you and your loved one both can have during this terrible time.

For anyone who wants to read details of an adult-child experience losing a parent: My mother…read moreendured weeks of poor care at HealthPark Hospital (Ft. Myers) and terrible care at The Terraces (Bonita Springs) before my sister and I made the difficult decision to admit our mother to Avow Hospice in Naples. Thank god someone told us that Avow had just started admitting patients from Lee Country, and thank God a bed was available. Mom was quite suddenly at the end of her life, and we were unprepared to set up proper home care. Mom said she was glad when she arrived at Avow, and the next day she told us she felt the nurses cared about her. Thank you, Avow, for making Mom--and our family--feel safe and supported. They also gave her a drug that truly eased her suffering without causing her to be completely sedated. However, I did clash with one nurse who wanted to increase the dose right away and who implied I wanted to keep my mother alert when she needed to have pain relief. Other nurses and supervisors agreed to a lower dose. I know it's not easy to make these determinations, but don't be afraid to question what's happening and speak to whoever is in charge at the moment. I respect the expertise of health care professionals, yet every nurse will have their own preferences. Prior to Mom's arrival at Avow, she spent weeks at HealthPark hospital and 10 days at The Terraces. Care at The Terraces was just horrible, even when I was right there in the room. This facility is seriously understaffed, and I do feel sorry for the nurses, who are being put in a bad position. (Avoid this place if your loved one is very ill but being discharged and sent to rehab. It might be ok for someone there to rehab from a knee replacement.) Care at HealthPark was more frequent but still poor. My main complaint is lack of compassion, kindness, and professionalism at these places. I know it's easy to find fault, and I know understaffing is a serious problem. and yet health care is a higher calling and sick people deserve attention and care. I say all of this in order to compliment Avow, the only hospice I can report on. Nurses came frequently, they were compassionate to Mom and us. Thank you. Kindness was abundant and staff respected the gravity of the situation. My sister and I were impressed by the priest who made rounds. He was personal, and he wanted to know all about Mom's life. He wasn't put off when we told him that none of us, including Mom, still went to mass, and he didn't pressure us to do anything. I like to think Mom was comforted by the last rites he provided. Why not a 5 star review? A couple reasons: the TV/cable sitution is not great. This might sound unimportant, but my mother was awake and alert two evenings and wanted to watch TV. She said this. But there were many issues with the clicker, settings, and stations. Several staff tried to trouble shoot, but no one could solve the problems. Several stations were on the guide but not subscribed to, including, Turner Classic Movies, a channel that would provide a lot of comfort and familiarity to many patients. Another complaint is about follow through: during the one afternoon Mom was totally aware, she asked for her bed to be wheeled outside on the lanai. The nurse said she had to do something and would be right back but didn't return. So Mom never got to view the beautiful lake. Finally, the night Mom died, my sister and I felt pressured to call a funeral home immediately and to leave quickly. We felt we didn't have enough time with our mother and to gather up our things. It was the middle of the night, so I really don't understand why everything had to happen so quickly. We were in shock, devastated, and shouldn't have even been driving. Despite my criticisms, I believe the Avow facility is excellent and the staff are great. I am glad we brought Mom to the Naples location. I've also received many texts offering to provide support, and I appreciate that, too. I hope some of the shortcomings I've pointed out will be addressed for future patients and their loved ones.

My mother has been a resident in Memory Care at The Gallery at Cape Coral, formerly The Waters,…read moresince Jan 2023. Frankly, I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. My family and I are here very nearly every day, at all different times, so we see all different shifts, departments and activities. The nursing staff and care givers are AMAZING; warm, competent, PATIENT, professional, fun, engaging and very loving to the residents. From the drivers, to the therapists, activities, facilities team, front desk staff, housekeeping, sales & marketing...they all have a moment for a quick word, a hug, a laugh, a warm smile. The staff operates as a team, focusing on each individual resident and their life enrichment. Of course, at times issues occur. They are dealt with quickly and any necessary changes made with little drama. I have witnessed the Director of Nursing giving clear and direct correction to the team - and yet still with a respectful, compassionate and team/resident focused attitude. While safety is paramount, unfortunately there are occasional accidents / falls. They clearly have tight policies in place, and the staff react IMMEDIATELY; often running to help, quickly assessing the situation, calling for appropriate nursing assistance, and securing EMT'S if necessary. They also manage the other residents keeping them supervised and calm, while handling the emergency. There was a fall recently, and the med tech reacted to the unusual loud SOUND, before even the resident called out. He and another CNA stayed with the resident, the Director of Nursing was there within 2 minutes, and the EMT's were on scene within about 6 minutes. The reception team always have a kind word to say and a warm welcome. My brother, who lives out of state, visited in Nov. He was warmly greeted by Leon, who remembered him even though his last visit was in February. Leon is also regularly found playing chess with a resident, while he is watching the door, working the phones, etc. When you walk past the front desk and find the Director of Nursing covering the desk because the receptionist requested to attend the funeral of a resident that speaks volumes about the team environment and resident/family focus of this facility. The facility itself is lovely, and they truly use the entire place. They have everything available to the residents, and although mom is on the Memory Care side, we often share in the Assisted Living events, meals, bus trips, etc. They are truly inclusive and make accommodations for all the residents to enjoy and live their best life. The activities are a major focus for us, and this is very key to Mom's happiness. There are loads of things scheduled all day long and they do their best to keep the residents engaged both mentally & physically, with ability-appropriate activities, or just inclusion for those unable to participate. Stimulating music, sing a longs, dancing, bingo, arts & crafts, decorating, garden club, nail care/manicures, pet therapy, bowling, axe-throwing (a BIG favorite), movies and so many more keep the residents engaged and active. When my mom sees the activities director and walks away from me to hug HER it warms my heart. Additionally, Jodi goes and gets Mom and the residents she knows want to participate, plus encouraging the others to come today to check it out. Inclusive, fun, joyful, and engaging. As well as summer picnics, dinner dances, bus rides, lunch outings, the facility also has special events planned around the holidays. These always include getting the residents dressed up and groomed just a bit more special...whether the families are there or not. They go to great lengths to make this 'home' for each person. They check on mom two to three times each night, often two CNA's together, changing her if she needs it and making sure she is comfortable and resting well. The dining room is lovely and set up well, the food excellent, and they serve as if you are at your favorite restaurant. And while memory care needs special considerations in their dining room and isn't as 'fancy' it is still wonderful and completely appropriate for the clientele. The residents are given appropriate choices, and yet their preferences are noted, so if they are unable to answer they are still served as if they did. IF someone has trouble eating, the staff will feed them, gently and with kindness. And if someone is perhaps ill or just needs a little special treatment, a different meal, Burger, BLT, grilled cheese, is provided. We researched quite a few places before deciding on placement. Mom has thrived under the care provided here, as have so many of the residents, and I am grateful I found this place at this time in her life.
