The store deserves a 0 rating, or less if possible. I echo others in wishing we had read reviews and done some research before buying furniture from that store. Their post-sale customer service is non-existent and I would even call it deceitful with lies about status updates and delivery dates. We filed a complaint to the HK Consumer Council and also to Amex to try and halt payment. We were also prepared to file a claim with the Small Claims Tribunal in order to get a refund. Our experience which we hope this review will help others avoid unfolded as follows:
We purchased a sideboard, a dining table set (2 chairs + a custom made bench), and a custom made sofa in Sept. We were told the sideboard & dining table would arrive the following weekend, with the custom made items (sofa & bench) to arrive 6 weeks later. Full payment was made upfront - looking back, we should have never done this, but at that point in time, Home Essentials seemed like a reputable company and the staff, in particular their CEO seemed to be very helpful and friendly.
After the sale was done, everything changed - our communication with them ranged from evasive to non-responsive and deceitful.
The sideboard was delivered, but the door magnets weren't working and a door hinge fell apart within a few hours. It took multiple emails over a span of 2 weeks and 2 separate (workman) trips before it finally got fixed.
Towards the end of Oct (~6 weeks after order), we were informed that our sofa was ready and that delivery would be within a week. We enquired about our bench, no reply despite several chaser emails.
A week passed and we didn't hear back. We were told their CEO was at the factory doing a quality check and will confirm within the day.
We didn't hear anything back so we followed up again and were told that the delivery date would be missed by a few days. We asked about the bench and received a reply saying that the bench was a problem because they didn't have one in stock. (The bench was meant to be custom made, so they had likely forgotten about it - we're not sure as we never received a straight answer). We were told that it was getting made and would be ready shortly.
Early Nov - delivery of the sofa was confirmed for 13th with the bench conveniently omitted from their emails. On the 12th, (a day before delivery), we were informed that there was yet another delay and delivery would be on 18th. Everytime we brought up the bench, our question was ignored.
On the 18th Nov morning, we were informed about yet another delay, with the CEO sending an email to "push back delivery by 1 day". After several emails back and forth where we asked for a refund, the truth finally emerged that the arms of the sofa were the wrong size, so they needed another TEN days. We were shocked - they had supposedly done a quality check at the end of Oct, and the CEO had blatantly told us that he needed to "push back the delivery date by 1 day" even though he knew it was going to take longer.
At this point, we filed a complaint with the Consumer Council - 10 weeks after we had placed our orders, and a month after the sofa & bench were meant to be delivered. Amex was also contacted as Home Essentials refused to give us a refund. The response from Home Essentials were (quote) "We have not crossed the line warranting a refund" and "We are not failing to deliver" (unquote) which is a complete joke!
The sofa was finally delivered in the second week of Dec, however there was no word on our custom made bench. Consumer Council chased up for us as well, but didn't receive any reply.
Week of 20th Dec: We finally went down to the store to ask about the bench and for a refund. We were told that we would have the bench by year end (which we didn't believe), so we settled on a compromise - to take any 2 chairs instead of the bench.
All in all, it has taken us 14 weeks to sort out our furniture, almost 3 times longer than the average time for any custom made furniture.
A side story to all of this, we were at a bar having drinks with a friend one evening and I was relaying our frustration and the lady next to us said "Oh my, I didn't mean to overhear, but our friends had the exact same problem with fake delivery dates and they are still waiting for their furniture!" Other friends whom I've spoken to have also heard similar stories.
