St Raphael Parish - Renovated church

I went to St. Raphael school K-8 and attended / served Mass here growing up. I have been to both…read morethe original and newly renovated church. I hate to be critical here, but I'll try to justify my rationale of why I'm upset. Here are the highlights: ~ The Church: Since the renovations, it's become a more modern looking church, even though it still has the same Altar and crucifix as the original. Being so close to the original church as I was growing up, I couldn't help but feel sad and disappointed in the renovations. To me, it lost its holiness. The original church just had that feeling that I was entering into God's presence. When I go the Cathedral downtown or St. Mary in Avon, I get that same feeling. It definitely enhances my worship to God and makes all the difference. Certainly, the modern churches like this one are beautiful looking, but to me they lose that holiness I long for in my worship to God. See pictures of each attached. ~ Music: The long time music director/ organist / cantor here is special. I love his rendition of the hymns: the Magnificat (Chepponis), Jesus The Lord (Roc O'Connor), One Bread One Body, I Am The Bread of Life, and Taste and See, to name a few. Since the renovations, though, he hardly sings anymore and they have assigned cantors for each Mass, which is unfortunate. ~ Priests: Over the years, St. Raphael has been blessed with many priests starting with who I grew up with: Fr. Callahan, Fr. Tom, Fr. Craig, and of course Fr. Tim. I also loved serving for some of the substitute priests (their names escape me). From what I've heard, it sounds like the other priests who have now come and gone are great too, which is a wonderful thing and what you hope for in every parish. Overall, it's a great parish, community, and school. I enjoyed it during my younger days, but I've since moved on and attending other parishes that will enrich my love for God even more -- and that's most important for all of us to find.

A parish is much more than a fish fry... these reviews are ridiculous. A review should be evaluated…read moreby how the parish leads souls to Christ -- that's ultimately the mission of any parish. With that in mind, this parish has been a mixed experience for me. Architecturally speaking and in terms of interior design, it leans heavily toward a modernist, minimalist aesthetic that doesn't quite reflect the depth and richness of the Catholic tradition. The layout feels more akin to a Protestant worship space. The tabernacle is also placed off to the side by a window -- rather than in a central and prominent location -- which is a liturgical concern. While it's practical for outside adoration, it unintentionally downplays the centrality of the Eucharist, especially during the highest form of worship at the Mass. The Church teaching talks about the placement and design of sacred spaces matter -- not as personal preferences, but as visible signs of the veiled mysteries we celebrate. Beauty and reverence in church architecture help form the soul and draw us into deeper prayer. After all, the Mass is when Heaven and earth meet together. Imagine helping the faithful see that in the beauty of how the church is architected and design. This church is missing that overall. That said, the spiritual life of this parish has been a source of grace for me. The ability to stop by and adore Jesus in the adoration chapel almost daily has been great as it's a quiet and consistent reminder of His presence. The young adult group also gathers here weekly on Tuesday evenings, which has also been a major highlight. It's a faithful, encouraging community that's helps grow closer to Christ and connect with others on the same path. So while I hope to see this parish gradually move toward the sacred tradition that has been unfortunately lost throughout the Church ins parishes everywhere, I cannot deny the good fruit the parish does bear. Ultimately, this is a place where you can encounter Christ, deepen your prayer life, and be supported in your walk with Him -- and that's what matters most.

We couldn't be happier with our experience being a part of the church community here. Fr. Ron our pastor is a special leader and makes everyone feel welcome. His messaging is engaging and encourages participation in a gentle way. Maureen Goodwin, our principal is great! I would highly recommend St. Joseph Parish to anyone on the west side looking for a church home.
