Visited Notre Dame Law School in early January...just when the campus had been reopened from…read moreChristmas break. There still were no classes or students on campus, but the buildings were open so we could get a peek inside. Notre Dame Law School is smack dab in the middle of the campus...easy reach from everything. The facilities - split between Eck Hall (mostly classrooms and faculty offices) and Biolchini Hall (mostly administrative offices and a few large classrooms, besides the four story Kresge Library) - are very nice...everything concerning the Law School is contained in these two interconnected buildings. This location happens to be on the marching band route on football days also, so it is a very popular site. The Law School facilities are nice and modern and they have tons of room. The law school used to be smooshed into Biolchini Hall...but the 2009 addition of Eck Hall pretty much doubled the space and gave everything more room. As you enter Eck Hall, you enter a three-story atrium connecting the first few floors with the classrooms and the main courtroom. The moot courtroom is laid out as a normal courtroom, but it also has a large sliding screen in front that shields the judges bench for straight classroom seating...nice convertible addition. This is where most of the guest speakers deliver the goods. As to the classrooms - many are laid out like traditional rectangles, others in the pie-wedge shape...all seem to have up-to-date technology keeping students plugged in. The lecture and seminar rooms were very nice and on the newish side. It is obvious the Law School is reinvesting in its property. The Kresge Law library in Biolchini Hall is superb. Carrels, large tables, easy seating, breakout rooms, and more are strewn about all four floors making for loads of options for the students. There are only enough carrels for 100 or so, so not everyone can have one assigned for the semester. Overall seating is over 550 though, so there is lots of space. With all the seating and study space, there is also a main reading room in the library. With soaring gothic windows and atrium space this library has a very open and spacious feeling. Lockers for the students are on the lower level in Biolchini Hall. The second floor connecting link between the two buildings houses a cafeteria for students and faculty. Notre Dame's Law School is well-ranked in the top-25 tier of schools and the faculty is well regarded. Being located less than two hours away from the major legal market of Chicago, the school has the benefit of job/internship opportunities for students. When we were out looking at law schools, we stopped by for a visit...even though we showed up unannounced they had someone in the Admissions Office who set us on a self-guided tour of the facilities...nice touch. It just showed a welcoming attitude, and a school that is not resting on its laurels. A good choice for a top-25 law school less than 2 hours from Chicago.

There are, however, a few red flags. As the majority of students play a sport at Bethel, as a student who did not I felt that the admin and programs were very biased towards student-athletes. All of the school's money was poured into athletics opposed to academics which is the major reason why I am transferring. They would never tell new students this but their science department, along with other departments such as psychology, as slowly deteriorating. I had several major courses that I was set to take my Sophomore year but no professors qualified and solidified to teach. I felt that this was very hidden from students as I talked to staff personally. I was very disappointed in their lack of honesty. In fact, a prof came into one of our classes to "assure" us that we should stay at Bethel and not worry about the lack of profs for the coming year. Her only "assurance" was that God would provide profs to fill the positions. Despite being a Christian, this does not guarantee that God will provide teachers. I had friends who were still at Bethel and in fact they did not have an in-person professor for ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. All of my friends failed or had to drop the course. Meanwhile, now that it is the Spring semester, Bethel students are in fact commuting to IUSB and paying the Bethel tuition cost for this class. Another factor is the cost of attendance. The cost is NOT worth the actual education/experience. It is crazy to attend a school for 42 k /yr that makes students commute to other local schools to take classes due to a lack of profs. Not to mention the living situations. The freshman female/male dorms are a joke. The rooms are very old and not updated. For the cost of rooming you could easily afford an apartment that is much better quality than the dorms. My door would randomly open almost every day as the lock was bad and despite filling multiple reports throughout the year was never fixed or looked at. The closet doors did not shut all of the way. The paint was chipping off of the doors badly and paint fell from the ceiling onto my toilet every day. I would say the same for many other buildings on campus. I did meet many sweet friends and had great experiences with the profs I did have, but it is NOT worth the money. If you look up recent tax forms for the school, you will see that they are loosing money and in debt which is why few of these issues such as teachers/facilities are not being addressed as they should.

Indiana University South Bend is part of the Indiana University system…read more The university started out as a place where "non traditional" students went to school at night while still maintaining a full time job to further their careers. However, with the cost of tuition rising and parents unable to help out, many more traditional students are choosing IUSB for their education. This is seen by the number of building projects over the last 10 years. New classroom buildings have been erected, a student center built and land purchased for the building of dorms. IUSB lives in the shadow of it's more well-known neighbor, University of Notre Dame but has some features which the larger and much more pricey universities do not. Class sizes are small. At state run schools, it is not uncommon to have 100s of students in your introductory classes. This is not the case at IUSB. Even these 100 level mandatory classes are small with about 30-40 students in a class. By the time you have reached your 300 level classes, there are usually less than 10 people in your classes. This makes for excellent student - teacher relationships. The faculty at IUSB is nothing to laugh at either. They have been recognized around the world for their research and teaching abilities. Many of them could be other places but choose to stay at IUSB because of the atmosphere and relationship with students. Worried about further education? Undergraduates in all fields usually have the opportunity to work closely with a professor on a research project if they choose. They have gone to prestigious graduate schools, law schools and medical schools. There is a graduate program too. Another good thing -- if you decide to get out of town, IUSB is the IU system so ALL of your credits transfer!!
