At the grocery department you can find all kinds of goodies, pastry, fresh meat, fish, specialty products, and international foods. You also have several options to have something to eat either at the restaurant located upstairs, or at the many coffee/snack shops. This is like a huge fancy shopping opportunity for demanding shoppers. You can shop for beautiful handbags, high-end clothing and shoes, or if you favor a certain domestic or international cosmetic brand, they have it. Don't forget souvenirs, toys, home goods and Finnish design items. The customer service department will ship things for you to destinations all over the world and help you with duty free shopping. Among many other notable things is a big Alko store. This is the government monopolized liquor store. So, if you find great delicatessen for lunch or dinner, you will also have the opportunity to purchase alcoholic beverages to go along with your meals. Really, if you want to spend time and money here, it is truly worth the trip, and everlasting experience while in Helsinki. The best thing at Stockman building is electronics store called Power that I just discovered last Summer. They sell variety of appliances, phones and so on. Found a table phone for my mom who needed to replace her old one. She uses it for Skype calls from the USA. Customer service at this place is priceless. The young men helping me during my visits were so knowledgeable, patient and friendly. One nice traditional point about Stockman is, that they have a clock on the Alexanterinkatu side of their many entrances. That is famous among all people living in Helsinki. When meeting friends, we used to say: "Meet me under the Stockman's clock." Happy shopping and maybe I will see you there.

What a nice department store. From the moment you walk in it's wonderful! There are fresh…read moreflowers, restaurants galore, coffee places. And then you get to the regular store which has everything you could possibly want and or need. I would equate it to a Nordstroms, or Macys. Nice quality brands and fair pricing. As a fun bonus I definitely recommend going down to bottom floor and you will find a very nice grocery store with all kinds of products. There is also ready to eat goods, hot, cold, fresh breads, pastries. Inside the store is also an outlet section if you're into a bargain! Who doesn't live a clearance section?? It's a fun store to wander around for sure!

A great mall downtown Helsinki, just as small or big a mall should be, plenty of shops but not too…read moremany. Get most of the good stuff you'd need from here. It's home to a large variety of shops and department stores. They had lots of places to get shoes, clothes, and other things you'd usually get at the mall. There's some wonderful architecture in here, how they've converted a big courtyard into an atrium with a glass roof covering the open area. There is a food court here, but nothing special in there- McDonalds and other chain restaurants. I recommend going elsewhere for food. The mall is huge- about a whole city block. It serves as a good way to cut through to the next block while staying warm and out of the snow. While here, be sure to check out the wide spiral staircase that ascends to the top floor. The mall is moderate to high end shops, with well organized shops. The mall felt safe, well lit, and clean. There's free wifi, and plenty of seating throughout the mall. I couldn't find the public restrooms. It's a pretty good place to go shopping, or just do some browsing in the Design District of Helsinki! Every other shop here seems to sell Moomin stuff. For some reason, the Finns are into a cartoon hippo, Moomin. What do hippos have to do with Finland??! I looked and looked for actual hippopotami while in Finland, and didn't see any.

I really like flea markets. And secondhand stores. My mom is a treasure hunter and antiques lover…read more I grew up scouring American flea markets and thrift shops as a child and the love of the hunt has stayed with me. This is a great flea market in a beautiful location next to the seaside. The new market hall here is wonderful for foods ranging from ready-made to fresh produce, meats and fish, and sweets and coffee. The flea market itself is huge by city standards and heavy on womens' clothing, handbags, and knick-knacks. I have never seen many large items like furniture here but household goods abound. Comic books, records, jewelry, antique dishware...you name it, it's probably here. This is my favorite flea market: open air (fresh, seaside open air), great location, easy to get to by transit or foot, and rooted by a great place for food and drink. This is an activity that is easy to make a whole afternoon out of. Today's finds included baby clothes for .20 a piece, games for my classroom at around €2 apiece, and very expensive barely-used infant gear for about 1/20 of the retail price. There are a lot of great handbag deals on genuine and knock-off designer pieces if you're into that sort of thing. And I'm not talking about Chinatown type of stuff. I'm talking about the real deal.

Super easy shopping experience with so many great choices. I especially loved their little kids'…read moresection. They had all the fruit pouches you could possibly need, which made things really convenient. It's also very close to F6 Hotel, so the location honestly couldn't be easier if you're staying nearby. The market itself is clean, well organized, and the staff are incredibly kind and helpful. Pro tip: don't forget to weigh the bananas before heading to checkout!

A Solid market! Get smarket! This place is pretty good-…read moreit's got a wide selection of foods, at good prices. It's a good sized grocer in the basement of a shopping center. There's an escalator to get down there, and you have to rent a cart for a Euro. There's no fee for carrying around a basket. The produce section wasn't so great, but it did have the basic fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices. The dairy section was stocked with all kinds of weird cheeses I'd never seen before. One day when I went, they were sampling up the local cheeses in the aisle. Score! There's a large bakery section, with a huge variety of rye breads. Go for the ones with lumberjacks on them, or the one shaped like a cat for extra flavor. They also have a big selection of pre-made foods, like cassaroles, fish, meats, sausages, etc. If you wanna grab a bite to go, this is a popular spot. The fish selection was some of the best I'd seen in a supermarket- they must've had salmon prepared two dozen different ways. The beer selection is pretty primo too! They have mostly canned beers, but with a huge variety of beers from across Europe at discount prices. Many of them are kept cold, but the majority of the craft beers are kept warm. You can buy most of the beers as singles, or as 6+packs, so I chose to jump around with different local(ish) breweries that I'd never heard of. Finland's a cold place, the beer chills really quickly, so don't worry about them being sold warm. I've never seen such a licorice selection- they had all kinds of the local flavors and varieties. The local specialty is the salted licorice- they have some good examples of this in their huge selection of flavors and brands. It takes up about a quarter of an aisle. I think you get charged for a shopping bag, so you might try to save by bringing your own. The check-out lines were long, but it seems that they're (unsuccessfully) trying out a self-checkout system. In all, it's a great place to stop by near the train station for fresh or packaged foods!
