I'll preface this by saying that I was never able to actually see the doctor because of complications with her "front desk staff." The woman that I spoke with was *very* difficult to deal with. When I reached out to her, explaining that this was a referral from another doctor. Her English was definitely not the best and she made no attempt to slow down her words. When she got to the membership fee, I was told that it was $500, to which I told her was too much. She then said "well, we can work with people. How about $400? Or $300?" The $500 sounds like a racket as it is but to haggle with you over a membership fee that a doctor SHOULD NOT BE CHARGING FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE reeked of sketch. Regardless, I trust the doctor that recommended Dr. Gilbert implicitly so I said that I'd be willing to pay the $300. The woman then told me to call my insurance to make sure that their office accepts my insurance. At that point, I asked her if I should be doing all of her work for her. "Isn't it YOUR job to make sure that you take my insurance?" Only then did she say she would try and call but she's "very busy and do not have all day to spend on the phone with insurance companies." She called back the next day to tell me that she couldn't get in touch with my insurance and that I'd have to do it myself. I don't care if Dr. Gilbert can cure cancer, HIV and dementia, the impression I get from her hired help is that she's a snake oil salesman hiding behind a membership fee. I'm not looking for a gym. I'm looking for a doctor. I looked elsewhere and so should you. read more

I have not seen Dr. Gilbert, but I was scheduled to have my first appointment in about a week and a half. I was very excited about the prospect of switching over to her as my PCP, given the positive reviews here and the recommendation of a good friend. Unfortunately, her office just called to notify me about a $200 yearly membership fee, that would be due at the time of my first appointment. I've had this appointment for months, but they only gave me 10 days notice about a charge, not covered by insurance, to see a doctor who, despite the positive reviews, I'm not sure I'll like. It's like being surprised with a $200 copay that negates the point of having insurance. So disappointing... I'm sure she's a wonderful physician and me having to cancel my appointment is my loss, but new and current patients should be warned (with more than 10 days) that this office is charging everyone this fee going forward. This office should also not be listed on my insurance as in-network, because this yearly fee betrays the spirit of that. read more

Dr. Gilbert is amazing. There is no doctor I've ever trusted more. She's incredibly smart and knowledgeable; she leaves no stone unturned. She has solved a number of my medical mysteries because she never quits, and she is always so responsive & caring. I read some great reviews about this doctor, but what's the use if you can't get an appointment? Yes, four months to take a new patient! I'd also like to mention it took 3 phone calls to actually get to speak to someone. Apparently, the voice mails I left went ignored for about a week. When i finally did get the secretary on the line, she made seem like they were doing me a favor by offering me something in November. I declined...thanks for nothing. read more

Dr. Gilbert has been my doctor for over 6 years, so it'd be easy to take her for granted, but she really stands out. Here's what she has going for her: + Her office called me 20 minutes before my appointment to apologize & say that she was going to be a little late bc of train trouble. The wait ended up being only 15 minutes, which in other places would be considered standard and not even worth mentioning. + It's not difficult to get an appointment. + She's always been friendly, professional, courteous, well-informed and patient. She remembers details from one visit to the next and follows up on questions. + When she weighed me, she noticed I wasn't looking at the scale, so she simply wrote the number down without saying it aloud and moved on. + She mentioned before drawing blood that sometimes insurance gets weird about tests and asked if I knew what the intricacies of my coverage are. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with and grateful to have her. read more

Just saw Dr. Gilbert for the first time last week, to get myself sorted for my upcoming 2 month backpacking expedition in India. Honestly I'm pretty sure the 4 whole stars is mainly because it's times like this that you really enjoy having health insurance. All the vaccines I got here were covered, so I only paid the $15 copay for a consultation with the good doctor, two shots (I was very brave), and prescriptions for an oral typhoid vaccine, antimalarials, and an emergency stash of Cipro. Not that Dr. Gilbert wasn't good, too. One thing I will say, for prospective patients, is that she is very hardcore. Some people might like this, other people might hate it. I tend to be a wish-washy hippy-dippy "vitamins, chicken soup, and lots of rest will cure me" type, so I kind of need an occasional kick in the ass from my doctor. Dr. Gilbert tells it like it is, no bullshit. 100% kickass western medicine. You need this shot. If X occurs at any time, you will take this antibiotic. Do not eat this, that, or the other. Pack this, because you cannot get it there. To clarify, Dr. Gilbert is a primary care doctor who specializes in travel medicine. This is great if, like me, you travel a lot and sometimes go to exotic locales. So far, I don't know what she's like for a routine physical, though she's so "kickin' ass and takin' names" that I imagine that's her whole deal. read more

I highly recommend. I called her office when I had just moved to NYC, I didn't have a doctor established here, and... I don't have the best health care plan. She immediately saw me, [it was a matter of maybe having my appendix taken out], and put off the general physical appointment until after the current issue was taken care of. She was great! She even wrote me an extra perscription... to help with pain ;) ! When I went back for my normal physical, she was great! I explained my healthcare policy, and per my request, she didn't run extra tests [which would run up my personal bill], but she did explain each one she did, and why it was necessary, etc. etc. Putting the professional stuff aside, she is very good! New doctors are scary, and she was sooo great! I hate going to new doctors, and she was really knowledgeable, caring, sweet, and... just a good all around Doctor! She remembers who I am, even thou I have only been twice to see her, I definitely recommend her and her office to people. I agree with Nick C. in that she does no business of rushing you along, and she makes sure that all of your concerns are taken care of. read more

Dr. Gilbert is fantastic. I've been seeing her since the late 90's, and she's seen me through thick & thin. (Though she'd like me to be thinner, for my health.) I've changed insurances, and sometimes I've had no insurance, and she and her staff have always been accommodating and extremely helpful. I feel Dr G. keeps up on her reading and education, she always seems abreast of what's current. She is very sensible, and can also be nurturing when that's needed. Dr G. recommended a medication for my migraines that has been a life-saver, which no other doc had ever thought to mention (nortriptyline). It completely improved the quality of my life. Now she's patiently trying to get me to do all the things a gal of my age needs to be doing. I'm very procrastinatory. She gives me virtual butt-kicks when that's required, but always backed up by truly caring, and truly knowing her stuff. I could rant and rave about how great my primary physician is, but I'll keep it simple. She's awesome, I've gone to her for years, referred everyone I know who needs a primary, and I would not know how to even go about finding someone to replace her if circumstances forced me to. She's knowledgeable, very experienced, and available to her patients in a way that I know no longer exists, but was once the norm in a previous generation of physicians. I was at a specialist a few years ago for something and she had asked whether I needed a good internist. I mentioned that I have a great primary who's my internist, mentioned Dr. Gilbert's name, and the doctor I was visiting laughed and said of course I know her, I call her up all the time to ask her about infectious diseases among other things :) read more

Dr. Gilbert is a wonderful physician; she's a complete expert in vaccination, infectious disease and travel-related health! If there were space for a 6th star, she would get it. I work in health research and have been in health care for most of my career and I can honestly say that she's among the very best. Few doctors are this caring, patient & informative. The office is comfortable and inviting and Sunita, the office manager, is sweet and helpful. You'll even get filtered water and peppermints. That's nice for people like me who are always rushing and need a quiet place to relax for a moment. read more

Dr. Gilbert has been my PCP since I moved to New York almost 15 years ago. She treated me when she was in a group practice on Washington Square, and now I go to her office in Murray Hill. She is fantastic. She has been so helpful, so responsible, so respectful of my medical care. I always feel like I'm in good hands with her, that she will take the time to listen, and that she actually cares about me as a patient. In this day and age, given our health care system, those are all things to appreciate! Sunita, her receptionist, is equally good, which is really something to note. She is professional, friendly, and helpful. If you look at reviews for other doctors, the negative feedback is often about the front desk staff. Dr. Gilbert obviously understands how important it is to have someone kind and respectful working the front desk. Dr. Gilbert specializes in travel medicine, which is great if you travel frequently, like I do. But she is also a great PCP. read more

Dr. Gilbert is nice but the billing practices are deceptive and the front desk is not professional. I went for a routine physical and was told they would conduct standard lab tests that are covered by my insurance. I even wrote down each test she said would be conducted and confirmed with my insurance they were covered. After my appointment I received multiple bills from different companies for tests I did not request, were not informed would be conducted, and were not routine tests covered by my insurance. When I called the doctor's office to ask about this I received different answers from the woman at the front desk: one time she told me it would be waived (it was not), when I called after receiving another bill she yelled at me, then she was condescending and said "it's not that much just pay it." I was supposed to go for a follow-up test but because of these sketchy practices I do not trust Dr. Gilbert's office, and I will be going to a different doctor. read more

Dr. Gilbert has been my PCP for over a decade. She is thorough, curious and incredibly intelligent. I first went to see her when I was suffering from extreme fatigue combined with other, seemingly random, symptoms. My previous PCP was dismissive and told me I needed to rest. Dr. Gilbert immediately saw that I was in distress and she worked with me during a process of elimination to figure out what was wrong. She was attentive, patient and methodical. She suspected that my ailment was lung-related and although the results of a slew of tests and a chest x-ray were normal, she referred me to a pulmonologist for further evaluation. The pulmonologist reviewed the "normal" chest x-ray and noticed an area that was slighter whiter than she thought it should be. She sent me for an CT scan, which showed multiple granulomas in my lungs and liver. A lung biopsy confirmed that I had Stage 1 sarcoidosis. Dr. Gilbert then referred me to the appropriate specialists and my sarcoidosis has been in remission for a number of years. This year, different symptoms popped up and again Dr. Gilbert worked with specialists over the course of weeks to find the cause, which was determined to be laryngopharyngeal reflux and sleep apnea. Both ailments are under control and I'm back to normal. She is the leader of my medical team and thanks to her expertise and persistence, I am as healthy as I can possibly be. I recommend Dr. Gilbert unreservedly. read more

I used Dr. Gilbert as my PCP for a few years because I travel internationally for work a lot. I was very impressed with her at first because she took a lot of time to get my history and seemed very caring. However a few things have added up to me leaving her practice: 1. I got frustrated with attending annual exams and her telling me I needed to update immunizations but insisting that I come back for a separate appointment to do so. I know this is for billing purposes but is a huge inconvenience. 2. When I got pregnant, I found her attitude regarding traveling during pregnancy to be alarmist. I travel for work to Asia and Africa and needed to continue doing so through my pregnancy and when I wanted to have a conversation about minimizing risks, instead I was told that I was putting my fetus at risk if I did anything other than go to Europe during my second tri. There is nothing harsher you can say to a pregnant woman. This from a travel doctor! The front desk is also a bit scattered so all in all, I think there are better practices out there for me. read more

I find some of these reviews surprising. I found Dr. Gilbert when looking for travel medicine shots prior to a trip to India. I have since made her my PCP, and find her to be very thorough. She is cautious and has followed up on calls (e.g. received a message for a negative sinus culture). Her office also recommends specialists with whom I have been quite happy. read more

I went to Dr. Gilbert because I felt that I had been exposed to Lyme. It's controversial. So, I won't give any of my own opinions, since I'm not formally qualified to do so. Dr. Gilbert is a really good doctor. She makes sure you get tested for things you get tested for and not extra stuff. For me, that meant getting tested for vitamin D deficiency since I am indoors most of the time. She takes the time to talk to you and answer you questions. If you have an emergency, she will fit you in. Her office staff is not that on top of insurance paperwork and billing, but you could definitely do worse in NYC. read more

Dr. GILBERT has been my primary care provider for 12 years. She is unique among the doctors I have known in the level of personal attention and care she provides. I always feel that she takes time to understand my whole situation. She is interested in my psychological health, too, and has helped me through some difficult times with great advice. She is very thorough, very smart, and very skilled. In short, Dr. GILBERT is a consummate professional whom I trust implicitly. Dr. Gilbert was my primary doctor for several years. I have chronic pain issues and she eventually insisted that I see a "pain management" specialist as she felt (wrongly) that I was taking too much pain medication. The pain doctor turned out to be a joke who didn't have a clue how to help me, and when I explained that to Dr. Gilbert she blew me off & said I wasn't her problem any more. I haven't gone back, and I recommend that people stay far away from her. read more

I was referred to Dr. Gilbert by my PCP. It was a massive waste of time and money. First, the office is kind of dark and dingy, with excess office equipment sitting out in the waiting room. It truly does not inspire confidence. Second, Dr. Gilbert herself was rude, dismissive, and lacked the knowledge I would hope someone who holds themselves out to specialize in infectious diseases would have. Finally, I spent all of 5 minutes sitting across from her in her office when I was told she couldn't, or wouldn't, be able to help me based on the blood work that was faxed over to her in advance. No examination, not even so much as a check of my vitals. Mind you, I was referred to her by another doctor, so it was surprising to be told there was nothing she would do. Of course she did bill my insurance company $450 for the visit, along with my $20 co-pay, when I never even made it to the exam room, though I did leave her office in tears. I'd love to see what she put down to justify that type of charge. *Edited to add that I should have read the reviews first and saw her attitude about Lyme disease. If you have, or suspect you have Lyme, DO NOT go to this woman. read more

It is not hyperbole to say that Dr. Gilbert saved my life. I had been morbidly obese for most of my adult life, and about 13 years ago became a client of the Doctor's. She made it quite plain to me, in a compassionate, earnest, honest and candid way, that I had run out of time to get serious about my health, and encouraged me to join Overeaters Anonymous. She was, and continues to be, a wonderful cheerleader over the years, and continues to bolster my confidence in keeping the weight off. Dr Gilbert is my PCP, and I've seen her for everything from regular checkups to an attack of Diverticulosis. At all times she has been friendly, enthusiastic, and professional. Of particular note: she has NEVER, EVER rushed me in or out, always taking as much time as necessary, explaining things in regular english, and answering endless questions with pleasure, and making every possible effort to work around my insane schedule. I told the person answering the phone that Lyme is an emergency test and I needed her to give me an emergency appointment. I asked her to talk to the Dr. Gilbert. All I got was a curt answer. I found Dr. Gilbert over 11 years ago because I needed some travel immunizations. She's been my PCP ever since. She's AWESOME!!!! She really cares. I go to her for my physical every year and she's so knowledgeable and I feel very cared for with her. She is very careful never to over-medicate and always errs on the side of caution. I've been going to Dr. Gilbert for the past 5 years, and have referred my secretary and a friend to see her as well. They are both thrilled about her. Dr. Gilbert is definitely a traditional Western medicine style doctor, but unlike other doctors she listens to all your questions and addresses them. So much so that I immediately made her my PCP and referred her to all of my friends and coworkers (2 have gone and have fallen in love with her as well). Her receptionist Sunita is amazing also. Dr. Gilbert is so smart, and she conducts business in a no BS way....but still maintains a sort of small town private doctor feel. Such as personally calling me at home to follow up on concerns, fitting me into her schedule when I need to see her right away, and being completely thorough. Her office is private so there are never coughing people lingering around (besides me on occasion) and I have never had to wait more than 15 minutes. I highly recommend her. There is usually a wait to see her for a physical, but she is reasonable in wait time for routine appointments. Either way, totally worth the wait! read more

Dr. Gilbert has been my general practitioner for nearly a decade. She is incredibly thorough, reliable, and responsive. I've recommended multiple friends to her over the years and each has remained a patient after their initial visit. What I like best about Dr. Gilbert is how genuinely she listens to your past medical history, current ailments, and any concerns. She addresses each head on. In addition, whenever I've had an emergency or needed her to squeeze me in because I was sick, she always did her best to accommodate me and make me a priority. She has on multiple occasions even called me on my cell phone when she was out of the office to follow through or follow up. Dr. Gilbert is affiliated with NYU hospital too, so she always has good referrals for specialists. Another plus, she draws blood in her office - no annoying visit to a Quest lab! I highly recommend Dr. Gilbert. It's great to feel you have a doctor looking out for you in NYC. read more

I really don't understand what all the positive reviews are about; I found Dr. Gilbert to be woefully unformed about the latest research on various health subjects and oddly fixated on minor things that really don't matter. I'm a health care provider and I'm really not impressed. The person who referred me and had been seeing her for a number of years has decided not to go back to her saying she is finding her abrupt and hostile these days. My experience with her is similar. She seems scattered, abrupt, and is oddly related which makes it difficult to have a conversation about your concerns. There seems to be a monologue and no discussion. She was reviewing my medications and asked why I was taking 2 of them: 1 rx by another md and 1 over-the-counter. I told her what they were for and that the rx was only somewhat helpful for my symptoms but that the 2 together seemed to help. Her response was "if the rx is not working you shouldn't be on it and the otc med can cause aseptic meningitis so you shouldn't use it" and then walked out of the room to go see another patient. No discussion, no recommendation, no explanation of aseptic meningitis, nada. Not cool. She's probably OK if you are going to Vietnam and need vaccines and antimalarials because this is her specialty. But I don't think I'd trust her with my health otherwise. My friend seems to recall she was always "no nonsense" but not dismissive so maybe something is going on with her personally and it is oozing out in her practice. Seems like most of the positive reviews are from a number of years ago which was when my friend had a better experience of her services. I also forgot to mention that I have seen her for 2 annual physicals and she gave me a lab req without checking off routine labs like cholesterol profile, comprehensive metabolic profile which should be done for someone my age. I checked off those things myself. The only plus is the short wait time and it's a convenient location for me. But, I am going to move on. read more
