This place was great find by our friends, while on vacation in San Antonio. We were celebrating our friends sons sixth birthday with his request to go horseback riding. From the time we arrived we were greeted with warm Texas welcome. The staff and guide Tori were very helpful and made my wife, who is uncomfortable around horses, feel at ease. The ride was very enjoyable but waiting to get on was just as nice. The kids played with the dogs (including Harley the pug) running freely on the property and were able to interact with some of the horses prior to the ride. My son thought the staff (all 10-18 yr olds) were friendly and nice. The trail ride though, was extremely boring. It is literally a loop around the very flat property. This was a great experience for my two eldest sons and me. The ladies helping us did an excellent job of checking in with my sons, especially my youngest who started the ride with a great amount of nervousness. It was a peaceful, gentle ride around the property. The horses were well-trained and calm. We also appreciated the shaded playground, where my husband stayed back with our youngest son who is not yet old enough to ride. My friends found a groupon deal and decided to get a group together. The area is very spacious and there are plenty of horses. The owner was very friendly and made sure all our saddles were in place and comfortable. The ride was fun and the horses were responsive to light movements, but there were some moments when I was scared to death because the horses seemed agitated with each other and would bump into one another aggressively. When we arrived we were greeted very friendly by Jeff and his two sons that were helping . There was a family of about 5 with us that joined us on the ride. We are staying not too far from here on vacation and I have wanted to go horseback riding again for a while. We found this place and scheduled for today. We had our ride today and I have to say we would give them 10 stars if we could! We received a very friendly greeting when we arrived. They assessed our riding experience (which is some but not recently). They asked what we wanted to do and we agreed that since it has been quite a while for us walking with some cantering was where we were at. They gave us some instructions and introduced us to our horses. We got on very easily and took the horses for water and we were off! Jayden (I hope I spelled that right) was our guide. He was very nice and we all chatted back and forth during our very enjoyable ride through the somewhat wooded property. The horses were gentle and didn't require much guidance to follow him. The overall experience was amazing and if we get back down to this area again we will definitely be back! I brought my granddaughter here for riding lessons during her spring break. Unfortunately she became ill so we only got in 3 of the scheduled 5 lessons. She had a great time, learned a lot and would love to come back at some point. I will say that I am a bit more of a cautious person so did ask that she wear a helmet and that was no problem. You can't get a more authentic Texas ranch then this place! My cousin and I wanted to do some horseback riding and found this place on a whim while doing a Google search. They not only do horseback riding but have a host of other Ranchy-type activities that could possibly make for a great time! We called this place the day before to set up an appointment and they were very accommodating. They do ask you bring cash as they're a small outfit and don't take any other payment from what I recall. With cash in hand we arrived and mosey'd our way through some questionable piles of animal droppings to the staging area and met with the owner who was saddling up our rides. He greeted us warmly and we stood by while they finished their process. It wasn't long before we were asked to get on the horse for some basic instruction on how to operate these wonderful creatures. Mind you I was in my cowboy gear so it was even cooler as I truly felt like I was one of them. The owner had his young son take center stage and lead us through the backcountry surrounding their awesome Ranch. As we made our way through the terrain, he basically talked non-stop about the area, this horse riding video he recommended we watch, the native plants, we even stopped for a bit to taste some of the wild berries growing around there! Oh and this kid is quite an expert horse rider too given some of his handy work he displayed while we toured the backcountry. I couldn't get over this kid nor the experience, it was truly a unique and fun way to spend the afternoon! I really enjoyed everything about this experience and really dig the owner and his family! I won't hesitate to come back for some more horseback riding in the future and I suggest you do the same too! read more

This was an excellent, relaxing experience. Hollow Tree Ranch is staffed by warm, friendly people, from the owner on down. (This includes several surprisingly professional, knowledgeable youngsters who help out!) The horses are outstanding and responsive. The ranch is surrounded by a very pretty area to ride through. The ride in general is taken at a pretty slow, calm pace; it would be fun to have an area to let the horses run for guests who are comfortable on them, but I'd guess location and liability play into that lack. The ranch appears to do lessons and day camps for general riding, jumping, and maybe trick riding. (In the latter case, I saw some equipment that seemed like that to me, but I admittedly don't really know anything about it.) Check around for regular Groupons that help greatly with the cost. Oh, and for those who keep track of these things, the porta potty near parking area is your sole option. read more

This is a great place to go after exploring the Natural Bridge Caverns. Probably about a 15 minutes drive. Hollow Tree Ranch does a fantastic job with trail riding. But just to be clear, don't come here looking for a "Disneyland" kind of experience. This is a real family farm with everything that implies - including the dogs, cats, chickens, kids, and babies with the run of the place. Facilities are limited with just one outhouse and a hose by the stables. As you'd expect there is no gift shop or snack bar. Jeff and his two sons are very engaging, helpful, and patient. They did a great job picking horses - from very calm for our new riders to spirited for our experienced riders. They cover the basics of riding western, but they really expect you pay attention and exercise common sense. The horses are used to trail riding and will largely follow-the-leader on auto-pilot. But if you can demonstrate you are comfortable handling a horse, you are free to explore - directing and pacing the horses on your own. Recommend you call in advance since they have limited capacity and have regularly scheduled lessons they need to work around. read more

I was looking for a place to go horseback riding since I moved to the area, & was really excited to finally go this past sunday because the weather cleared up. Directions were simple to get to, you knew you were in the right place. I drove up to see a bunch of horses just casually going about their day . I met the owner of the ranch & turns out I was the only one for that hour trail ride so I was able to get a private tour with him! Amazing. I rode the horse "Ally," she was gentle & I was taught how to do a little trot. I was nervous excited in a good way. We rode along his property which had soft flowers blooming and the birds were out and it was in the upper 70s during my 1:30pm ride. I was grateful the price was fair as well, because I DO want to go once a month hopefully. These are kind and caring people, who have an excellent business of boarding horses, lessons, & public horseback riding. They also have a Canyon Lake ride that is a bit longer and higher in price, which could be amazing to try one time in the summer. Highly recommend this to do, it made my week. read more

All four of us were first time riders and got an extremely brief introduction on how to ride a horse. The actual tour was very meh too. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the owner's very polite son, asking us to wait at the horse stalls until it was our turn to ride. He even told us to feel free to pet the horses and replied with "yes ma'am" and "yes sir." The land was absolutely gorgeous with horses, chickens, dogs, and a cat roaming around quietly. Almost like a scene from a movie. The owner, Jeff, arrived with another group then got us settled for our trail ride. He was very knowledgable and patient! Great for first timers. He told us how to steer the horses and gave us a few pointers on posture. Another group went with children came along and he was very patient with them as well. The trail ride was beautiful. Went around sunset so it was perfect. The horses were calm and knew exactly where to go and how to follow the trail. We had the best time and we will definitely be coming back! :-) read more
