So beautiful and very clean area. The visitor center is easy to access and has educational areas and interactive things to do with the kids. There's a jogging track, a few piers to fish from, a kids playground and hiking trails that lead back into the woods. Many boaters, some swimmers (with designated areas and beaches even), some fishermen, and hikers scattered this area of Arkansas just outside of Hot Springs. It was fairly hot when we went, but still good fun and beautiful scenery. If time had permitted, I would have liked to take my daughters to Three Sisters Springs and other places. We instead stayed at Echo Canyon which is not technically part of the state park, but exists on Lake Ouachita.

A wind brings a shower of the fall foliage, and a reminder that nothing is permanent. My mid-fall dreams are full of this water, and the sound it makes meandering along it's path to the eternal. I see a beautiful rainbow trout raising to the bait. The inevitable splash and taking of the line. The curl of my fly rod as I set the hook and the battle is on. Sadly, that was not to be this day (but I have caught many here before). Any time on the Little Red is time well spent. Book in hand, I relax on the rocky shore. We rented from Gypsy Canoe (see my review). Until we get more experience, we'll continue to rent from Gypsy. The Kayak Park has a few rapids for exposure. You can actually roll if you don't maneuver in the Dwight section if it. The good news is the water is fairly calm so there's no scary current to drag and keep you under. I went my my 9 year old and next time we are bringing the dog!

Lots of people come here, and the main parking lot is always packed near the visitor center and restaurant. Sure there's lots of parking near the hiking trails, but up front not so much. This place reminds me of Top of the Rock in Branson. There isn't much in the way of activates here. I wish I was told more about this place. It seems Petit Jean is more centered around hiking and mountain biking. Lots of trails for both, and then a restaurant on a bluff that hikers, motorcyclists, and tourists seem to flock to. If you don't really hike, or bicycle, and don't really care about eating at a restaurant that looks over a bluff then save yourself a trip. I mean if I was an avid hiker I might really like this place, but since I'm not there's other places around just as beautiful without the drive.
