The holidays are over but the need to find the unique items for any occasions...totes low as $3 are always in need and to have these craft fairs on a scheduled basis is a great support to our local small businesses and to easily reach out to folks looking for that something that's not easily found in one location. This Made with Aloha Gift Fair is at Pearlridge Center Mauka Wing every third Saturday and Sundays right in the middle of it all and the vendors may vary at moments though follow @islandcraftfairs as they will list the participating shops and what they have to offer...it sure got me down here to see what Chinese New Year items they have from Unik Gifts and Things and no they don't have instagram but though wonderful events like this reached out to many folks flocking over to shop and with my purchase he gave me a free frog charm for good luck as he says "you can't buy luck" very true and a generous gesture which was truly valuable and this made me smile. Like many other markets who seems to be trying to find a place Ho'omau Hawai'i Market has been shopping around and I think I do love this current location at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom which was tricky to find if you're not paying attention like me as the ballroom sits on the 6th floor of the parking building so it's super convenient along with parking is validated at $10 flat rate which the staff was just so friendly to explain it all is nice. Happening over the following Black Friday weekend (Nov 26th & 27th), many are familiar and a few that is new to me browsing around in the cool air conditioning ballroom made the shopping experience nice. Weather it's picking up cute Turkish Towels and glassware from Kris Hawaii, Mamaki tea from Kihene, or my cravings at 'Ulu Chips and Hummus and many offered such great deal along with entertainment is such a calming vibe that has me shopping much more than I expected and the uniqueness is what makes this market so special. That's one thing that I do love about crafting is you can make it all your own and here at Hawaii Potters Guild I learned from an event they were participating in is that there are members who pay to use their facilities which is everything from throwing to the kiln which is amazing and you purchase the clay from them as well so really all you need is your imagination. The also have classes as well which is quite cool though not sure if I have steady hands to make something but knowing that there are places like this is nice and to meet some of the members who had their items on sale is breathtaking as each is very different from chimes, plates, vase and animal cups so cute and you know I couldn't resist getting a few. I was motivated to take a pottery class this summer after feeling a bit uninspired from a grueling school year on the mainland. Creating art is an awesome form of stress relief and such a great way to challenge yourself. As a first time student, it can be very challenging to get into a class at HPG. You submit an application and must be picked from a lottery. Look on their website for detailed instructions on how and when to submit your application. Submit your papers at the studio and on-time! There are no exceptions for late applications. I was lucky enough to get into a Monday evening class on the wheel. Classes are 3 hours long and our instructor was great. Every week we went over a new style, technique, or concept. Also, the classes are for all levels of potters. There were people who had never thrown clay before to people who have been doing this for years. Students have access to the guild during the week to come in and work on their projects as well! Clay is purchased from the guild and tools are also available for purchase. Everyone in the studio is extremely helpful and very willing to teach. Over this summer I've learned so much from not only my teacher, but also my peers. The community of artists at the Hawaii Potter's Guild is truly a unique group that cultivates a love and passion for creating. This is definitely not a goodbye HPG, but a see you soon.

I called her back as soon as I psyched myself up. Mom had a nervous laugh in her voice, so I braced myself even more... She explained that she and her classmates wanted to do something for the 88 graduates of their high school, Sacred Hearts Academy. They didn't want to give a perishable flower lei, so they thought that a yarn lei would be appropriate. What does that have to do with me? I attended Maryknoll School. Hah! Mom knows that I know how to make a yarn lei - and quite efficiently. I had made 100 lei for my nephew's graduation, so, what's 88 more? Mom also knows that I know where to get supplies at a reasonable price. She suggested that I call Max Imports and see if they're open. It's not easy saying "no" to mom. Thinking about all the sacrifices she made for me over the decades... well... you know... So, of course, mom was right. Max Imports was open. The phone was answered right away and the nice lady on the phone helped me so much. I told her that I needed to make 88 lei. She asked what school and figured out the colors: Yellow grosgrain ribbon - 3 spools White long eyelash yarn - 9 packages Yellow short eyelash yarn - 9 packages Total = $485.34, including tax I told the kind lady that I could be there in about an hour after getting cash from the bank - no problem. That was enough time for her to pull the items from the shelves. When I got to Max Imports in Kalihi, there was metered street parking and a free parking lot next to the warehouse. I went up to the table like she described and rang the "Apple Bell". She appeared quickly and I gave her the cash. She went back inside to get a receipt for me. I found out that her name was Alice. I had seen her before at the Douglas Trade Shows at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. I had bought yarn and ribbon from them several times in the past. I had even come to this shop to get supplies. Alice was so knowledgeable and pleasant. She even helped me carry a box to my car! As we walked, I thanked her because I know that the prices at Walmart and Longs are higher. She added that those retailers wouldn't have the quantity I needed. She's right! So - if you need to make many lei, come to Max Imports for the best prices and service! Good luck!
