The kids were excited all day to go, and had picked out their derby names before we left. Once we got there, parking was overflowing into KMart across the street from the SkatePlex in Tampa. After getting tix, getting in, and setting up our seats (good idea to bring fold up chairs), we were right on time for the action. The first bout was very entertaining, both travel teams were excellent. In the end Tampa Bay pulled ahead, mostly due to excellent speed and agility by Jammer Barbie Bont. The kids stuffed themselves with junk food, got their hair painted, and bought t-shirts between the 2 bouts. I had a couple of beers to get into the mood of the event, PBR being a sponsor of the TBDD. The second bout started off a bit slower, with lots of tactics and few chances being taken. In the end, the Mafia won by only 2 points. A tremendous bout. We are all excited to go to the next event on September 10th. You should really make it a point to go!

It's connected to a bowling alley (literally connected), but we spent our time in the skating rink and didn't journey to the bowling alley part of the building. The rink is in serious need of updating. If you are thinking this is going to be bad, you are wrong. Roller Derby fans and participants are very much into the sport and they put on a great show. There is even a designated person walking around willing to explain what the heck is going on :-) The Roller Derby itself was fun to watch, exciting at times, and once we understood the rules, like watching any other sporting event. The rest of the experience outside of the actual roller derby sport was unique and enjoyable. Raffle tickets were sold, there was an intermission show (fencing), pamphlets were passed around for a non-profit, and there are souvenirs and food for sale. Everyone should go to Roller Derby at least once in their life. I absolutely recommend giving this a try.

Here take a look inside my coat. The only difference is that the Pasco Parks & Recreation isn't selling stolen watches, they are providing experiences. Are you looking for a dog park to walk your little one without a leash? Do you need to rent a room for a birthday party/yoga class/drum circle? Need a place to play tennis, baseball, volleyball, soccer or football? Into skate boarding? Swimming? Want to ship the kids off to a summer camp so you can drink margaritas by the pool and gossip about your neighbors? If you answered "yes" to any of these then the Pasco County Parks & Recreation complex could be for you. My most memorable visit to the Pasco County Parks & Recreation was for my daughter's first birthday party. We had looked around at various places in the New Tampa/Land O'Lakes area. Some places were too pricey. Others couldn't even give us a price. One wanted to charge us for every little thing. The Parks & Recreation room that we rented was reasonably priced. We were given free reign to set it up and decorate it how we wanted. They also gave us access to the kitchen area to clean the dishes or get water if we needed to. We were provided a printed list of guidelines at the time we booked the room so there were no surprises on the day we showed up for the event. The employees at the desk were knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions. They really helped the party go off without a hitch. I love the versatility of the Pasco County Government Parks & Recreation complex. They have a little bit of something for everyone.

I cannot tell you the amount of wildlife we saw. It was absolutely amazing. We saw Osprey and Ibis and tricolor Heron. The list goes on and on. We also saw a pair of osprey in a nest. We also saw a black vulture, a ring, neck, snake and various ducks not to mention a bald eagle juvenile. The water is beautiful. You can walk out on the dock and get a Birdseye view of the golf. They have clean bathrooms and plenty of parking. Bring your sunblock.

The sign upon entering clearly says: "No swimming allowed here" and I wondered why is that? This park is clearly on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico with a large beach area, so why no swimming? That is a great question. As you enter the park, even from my photo of the park sign at the entrance you can see this very creepy plant in the background. So I wondered if that had anything to do with the "no swimming" rules. So I did some digging & this is what I learned. The very creepy plant adjacent to this park is a power plant called the "Anclote Power Plant" owned by Progress Energy (located near Holiday, Fla. in Pasco County) It generates more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) from two steam units. "Progress Energy Florida" says it's to convert the Anclote Power Plant to CLEANER natural gas. Their webpage says that the Emissions-reducing conversion will "ALLOW" the company to comply with "NEW" federal standards. Hua? (Not good word salad folks) yikes. BECAUSE, "Currently, the plant uses oil & natural gas. The change is required to "ALLOW" the company to comply with "NEW" federal emission standards for coal & oil-fired generating units, including the EPA's new "MERCURY and AIR TOXICS STANDARDS" (MATS) rule." YIKES. (Nope, not good word salad folks) No wonder there is no swimming allowed. Do not recommend.
