And most of the season it's either covered in snow or in mucky, dead vegetation This feels like a thin forest located in...anytown, USA. It is the last "real" camp before you reach Mt Olympus, so, if you're climbing it's on of your only options for a base camp. (further away you could use Elk Lake, or if you are crazy, you could camp on Snow Dome) Black bears frequent this area, so be sure you are using bear wires or bear cansisters!

Trash bins were over flowing which was pretty upsetting since there are high alerts of bear activity and bears are put to sleep when they take human foods. Surrounded by mountains in every direction, it's almost impossible to take a bad photo. Even in the heart of summer, it stays quiet, calm, and incredibly peaceful. You can swim, kayak, chase waterfalls, and hike around the lake. Trails range from easy strolls to challenging climbs. I highly recommend Marymere Falls, which leads to a beautiful waterfall, and the Spruce Railroad Trail, where you'll walk along cliffs, through old tunnels, and past the famous Devil's Punch Bowl. The water shifts color with the light - turquoise, sapphire, even silver depending on the sun and clouds. The lake itself stretches 12 miles long. The shoreline is largely undeveloped, with just a few hotels and restaurants. Make time for the historic 1915 lodge, a perfect snapshot of old-school National Park charm. Pro tips: the north shore is quieter if you want to escape from everything, and the west side delivers the best sunsets.

Unfortunately, our experience with Chalet 1A was very disappointing. We booked our stay in June 2025 for a June 2026 visit. At the time of booking, the resort map showed a communal fire ring. We planned our meals and family activities around being able to cook over a fire and roast marshmallows with our young children. When we arrived, we were informed that the communal fire pit was no longer available. We were not notified of this change before our trip, despite booking a year in advance. The chalet only has a mini refrigerator and microwave, so this significantly affected the plans we had made. The condition of the chalet was an even bigger concern. During our stay, I had a mouse run between my legs in the middle of the night while I was in the bathroom. We also heard mice running and chewing every night, and there was evidence of rodent activity in the chalet. I encountered many carpenter ants, including swarmers, and even woke up with one crawling on my face. There were also maintenance issues, including a broken bed frame, large openings in the exterior of the building, a large gap in the back door between the frame, and exposed sharp metal on the floor. To the resort's credit, management responded to the maintenance concerns after I reported them. They acknowledged that the condition of the chalet negatively affected our stay, stated that the issues had been referred to maintenance, and offered a 30% refund of our lodging charges. Even with the 30% refund, I personally would not have paid that amount to stay in the chalet given the condition we experienced. I've gone backpacking and tent camping where I felt more comfortable than I did in this chalet.

The road in is long and narrow, but we took it slow and had no issues. We arrived a bit before they opened, so we waited in the lakeside chairs and enjoyed the view. We ordered the Spinach Salad and the Southwest Chicken Salad--both were delicious. Since we had our pup with us, we sat at one of the outdoor picnic tables. It was a very brief visit, so I can't comment on the accommodations, but for our purposes it was a nice stop.

The only bad thing was that the steps to the bathrooms and showers were very steep! The stairs did not have railings, so it was a challenge for a couple of senior citizens! Last chance is exactly what this place is. My boyfriend and I came to the coast for a quick get away without much of a plan. We were planning on winging the whole trip which usually leads to some pretty great things. Called a couple camping spots just to see and of course we got the cold shoulder with busy and packed camp grounds. We finally saw Last Chance and made a quick call. The friendly woman answered the phone saying she had plenty of space. Finally we were in luck!! We headed just outside of town and drove by these beautiful fields. Out of the corner of our eyes we spot the cute Last Chance signs. Do not be skeptical just follow the sign and go around the large abandoned building to the gorgeous open field. The place was EMPTY to our amazement. We picked our spot out of the many and saw a women coming to us on her ATV. She greeted us and we ended up talking about how she got the place started and all it had to offer. There were horses, elk and a ton of cute birds and wildlife. We only stayed a night but got so comfortable and felt incredibly safe. We enjoyed the sunset, saw a massive heard of elk right next to us and built an amazing fire. There is one outhouse & a small sink with soap and counter space to clean dishes if needed. The owner is willing to help with whatever and even provided the first night of firewood for free!! We can not wait to be back and bring our family and friends. Thank you for the amazing and comfortable stay!! This place needs to get on Airbnb to get the word out and spaces filled up. So much potential!!
