Chicago Detours - Beyond dates and names of architects, we dig into the ways in which we interact with architecture.

My wife did this tour a couple years ago and highly recommended it, but I wasn't especially interested because I had also gone to school here and figured I knew enough about Hyde Park already. However, she insisted that it would be worth our while and so I agreed to climb on the bus. And it was the absolutely right decision, because the tour was excellent. In fact, it wasn't just a tour of Hyde Park. It included the surrounding neighborhoods of Washington Park, Kenwood, Jackson Park, and Woodlawn. Since this was a UChicago sponsored event much of the information related to the University's investment and involvement in the area. Our tour guide and founder of Chicago Detours, Amanda, is herself a graduate of UChicago and thus she had some additional insight into the relationship with the community. Though the 75-minute tour felt a little slow-going at times, there was much to learn about the vibrant but sometimes troubled history of the area. Amanda has tremendous knowledge and the excursion was both fascinating and entertaining. I can imagine that Chicago Detours would have equally interesting tours of other neighborhoods in this diverse city.

Virtual tours are such a cool thing to do right now. I attended a Yelp Elite event that was a…read morevirtual food tour of Chicago. It was incredibly informative and a good balance of history and current trends. Looking forward to attending more virtual tours, like the World's Fair and the Cruise From Your Couch Boat Tour. I loved seeing the pictures of the in-person tours and can't wait to attend some of those too.

Village of Riverside - Big Head Fred is the caricature of Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect who designed the plan for Riverside.

There've been great changes since the last review. It's a rare gem to find a small, close-knit town…read morenear the city. Pros: * Good schools & kids activities * Retail - Grocery store (family-owned), restaurants, services, farmer's market - 20 min to Oakbrook Mall, 15 min. to downtown Oak Park * Beautiful homes - avg. price abt. $450k * Easy city access - 10 min. to 55 and 290/294 - two Metra stops * Infrastructure improvements * Nature & historic preservation * "Purple" political climate Cons: * High taxes * Diversity - town has minimal racial diversity, much better at local high school * Not recommended for families without children - Lots of money spent on family-friendly activities, would go to waste on child-free homes - Floodplain issues

Riverside is a beautiful little village, and I feel lucky to have been raised here. When you…read morecompare it to some of the neighboring suburbs that are more "blue collar" (like Lyons and Berwyn), this place really stands out as unique. First of all, there is a lot of history behind Riverside. It is considered the first planned community in the United States and it was designed in 1869 by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed Central Park). Also, a lot of the homes here were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and a handful of other notable architects. Many of the homes here are absolutely gorgeous. My home is a Queen Anne Victorian straight out of the 1880s. I love many of the other Victorian homes that can be found in this town. If you love architecture, then the village of Riverside is a must-visit. The people who live here are generally lovely and very friendly, if admittedly quite homogeneous (95% white). The public school systems are high quality, and there is also an excellent private school option in the K-8 St. Mary's School. Even though Riverside has struggled to keep businesses, there are several excellent places that appear to be thriving like the new place empanadUS, Grumpy's, and Chew Chew Cafe. I'm optimistic that growth will continue! Overall, Riverside is beautiful. Even though many out-of-towners have gotten lost when trying to navigate the winding roads, they are quite scenic when you factor in the beautiful houses, the trees, and the DesPlaines River.

Kapsa Monument Co did a beautiful monument for me and my late husband a few years ago and placed it…read morein a Hillside cemetery. The monument has a vase on each side. Recently one of the vases has become loose. I've tried to reach out to Kapsa a few times. No one ever answers the phone. I've left 3 messages in over a week and half stating my issue and asked for the favor of a reply. I've yet to hear back from Kapsa. This monument wasn't cheap. I've reached out to two other monument companies in the area in the meantime and they are willing to help but say Kapsa should stand behind their business and take care of this. If they can or can't, either way the courtesy of a reply is expected for such an expensive monument. I can't rate them good in the service area as they are non responsive.

Buyer beware. This place is absolutely awful. They will screw you on the contract and they are very…read moredisrespectful. They will intentionally and purposely omit IMPORTANT and KEY things from the contract, and this can screw you in the end. When I caught these items, owner refused to correct them. Here they are: 1.) They verbally said that ALL inscriptions and design are included in the price, but when you get the contract it does not say this, and when you ask the owner to add, he refuses. Don't ever sign the contract unless they clearly write in text that ALL inscriptions and design are included in the headstone price, just like they verbally say. 2.) Draft of the drawing, design, and inscriptions was not attached. How else will you know what the heck you are getting?!?!? Don't accept without this! 3.) Full names of the deceased were omitted. This contract is also combined into the application for the cemetery. Are we just trying to get the cemetery office to guess? 4.) Memorialist didn't sign the cemetery contract on the back, which is required before you can even place any headstone in the cemetery. The cemetery has its own rules which we all have to agree to. We don't own the cemetery. These are all normal procedures for all cemeteries. 5.) Approximate date of delivery was missing. You can't just put a season like spring or summer. The owner was very disrespectful. When trying to resolve this in a calm manner, he talked over me. I tried talking to the owner nicely on the phone, but all he did was hang up on me. Avoid this business, and go to others in the area that will: actually put in writing what they say verbally, are willing to actually fill out a contract completely, and treat you with respect. After all, if you are paying them thousands of dollars for a headstone, I would think that you would at least have the above taken care of. This place is absolutely awful. STAY AWAY.
