Jamie Martin did a great job building a sense of community among a dozen strangers while we ate ourselves silly at four distinctly different Chicago pizzerias over the course of an afternoon. He was knowledgeable not only of the restaurants and pies we tried, but of notable spots and styles across the country, with a focus on connecting to where each member of this band of tourists originated. At the last minute, I'd tried to book the bus tour but nothing was available during our visit, so I grabbed the walking tour. I'm glad I did, not only because of Jamie and our congenial group, but because even few blocks walking between venues made me feel less guilty and more ready to sample the next pizza. Our tour guide James was amazing! We went on my birthday and the tour was fabulous! I am not a fan of deep dish but left there loving the slice from Bartoli's in the Industrial district! It had a nice crust and hearty flavor! Favorite tavern style pizza hands down was at Flo and Santos! Love their Polish pizza and vodka! I recommend not eating before this tour because you will miss out on all the deliciousness of this experience! The Chicago pizza tour is one of the funnest things to do here AND you learn so much Chicago history, while stuffing your face! This is great for visitors or those who have newly moved to the area, of course, but it's even more enjoyable for those who live here because it really shows you how much there is to discover. Just incredible! We had a group of 20 (ranging in ages from 8-80) in town over mother's day weekend and I didn't see a tour available. What a surprising and new adventure for this trip to Chicago. Our trip started at 11am, a little early, but it's Pizza. This four stop tour was way better than Gilligan's three hour tour, but with just as many stories and antics. Each pizza joint was different in some way, but each offered something unique. The sauerkraut and kielbasa slice from Flo & Santos was amazing. Coupled with a Polish Pilsner, probably my favorite of the day. I didn't know I needed sauerkraut on pizza, but now it's all I will think about. Our guide was full of great stories about Pizza as well as neighborhoods and Chicago history. The lore of the deep dish demystified, but no spoilers here. This trip was well worth the money and time. I love food tours so much. Especially when you get a good one like this, where you not only get to explore multiple restaurants but also learn the history of food and the city. Also, the tour uses a school bus to drive you between places, meaning you get to see parts of the city you normally wouldn't as a tourist. Our tour guide, James, was fantastic and very knowledgeable about both pizza and Chicago (and he's funny!). They were able to accommodate vegetarian which was great. We stopped at four places, although I don't think it's always the same four places for the tour, as they have relationships with quite a few pizza places. We stopped at Pizano's, Flo and Santos, Coalfire, and Bartoli's. Pizano's had an amazing deep dish pizza because it was basically a "light" version of deep dish. Cheese, sauce, basil, and a perfect crust. Flo and Santo's was adorable and had Polish influence, and I definitely want to come back for the pierogis. Coalfire was my favorite and had fun specialty pizzas (and lots of veggie options!). They're also from MA (like me!). Their funghi pizza was probably my favorite of the whole tour. Bartoli's was a classic deep dish pizza and by the time we got here, I couldn't take more than a bite. Come hungry to this tour! You will get SO much pizza. I recently experienced the Chicago Pizza Tour through work and it was a great time! We had a group of about 15 people and everyone seemed to really enjoy our three hours with our great tour guide John! Half of the group was visiting from out of town and they really enjoyed trying the different styles of pizza that were available during the tour, as did the locals. We made three stops throughout, the first one was Labriola for burrata and basil deep dish, and I have to say that one was probably my favorite of the night. It was so delicious! Then we made our way to Flo and Santo's which was some amazing tavern style pizza. And lastly we ended the night at Pizano's for both deep dish and tavern style slices. And to top it off we had a cookie skillet with ice cream for dessert -- yum! Each stop also included a drink of our choice. John was so friendly and knowledgeable and did a great job of providing interesting information throughout the tour. He filled us in on some of the history behind these pizza spots and general pizza facts in Chicago, which was really fun to hear. Overall, everyone had a great time and we left feeling quite full. We did the bus tour on a Saturday afternoon. This was such an AMAZING way to spend our day! We got to sample Pizano's, Flo & Santo's, Coalfire and Bartoli's - deep dish, thin crust, coal-fired, dessert pizza, cheese and sausage, but also unique toppings too like polish sausage, vodka sauce, ricotta and hot honey. Our tour guide, James, was very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating -- there were several vegetarians on his tour, and he made sure there were cheese or veggie options for us at each stop. This was our first family outing this year. We celebrated my grandson's 3rd birthday. James was great! He knows his pizzas!! And the City! The tour was put together well. Chicago Pizza Tour was a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We went to four pizza places. According to James, our guide, the pizza locations are chosen based on ones that are family run and have a tie to the city. We sampled a variety of different pizza from deep dish to tavern style to coal fired. All the pizza was delicious and you can essentially have as much as you'd like. Our tour had leftovers at each location. James was informative and provided little tidbits of information as we rode along in an old school bus to each stop. We recently took a trip to Chicago and being somebody who is addicted to great food, all i could think about is Pizza, so what better kind of tour than a pizza tour?! We booked this tour expecting to hit all the majors. We expected Pizzeria Uno, Lou Malnatis and Giordanos. We were a little surprised when Danny, our tour guide, said we weren't doing any of those. Now at the beginning it disappointed me, but by the end of this magical pizza journey Danny took us on, i was left unbelievably happy and full! Our first stop was where we met, Pizanos. We learned from Danny that this restaurant is actually in the Malnati family but is run by Rudy Malnati Jr. the son of Rudy Malnati who was THE GUY behind the pizza at Pizzeria Uno. We got to sample both their deep dish and their tavern style which, according to Danny, is the pizza eaten most often by native Chicagoans. The deep dish was their vegetarian pie with fresh sliced tomato on top and a sauce that will knock your socks off! The tavern style pie was sausage. Sausage is the #1 topping in Chicago and Pizanos orders from the Anachini brothers and this special blend made only for Pizanos is amazing! Jam packed with seasoning and it really sets the pizza apart! Next stop, Flo and Santos. More tavern style pizza but this time with flare. We had a Chicago beef pizza with shaved beef and spicy Giardiniera, awesome! Then with the heavy polish community in Chicago (another fun fact from Danny) we had their polish sausage and sauerkraut pizza, salty and delicious! Then he brings out a s'mores pie (my wife's favorite) and we use that to cleanse the pallet before we move on to the next! Third stop, PEQUODS! I've read lots about this place and it did not disappoint! Danny knew i was counting down to this one so he made sure i ended up with two slices. This was another sausage pizza but this was different. The sausage was more of a patty than small pieces. The flavor was out of this world! Danny said he has tried time and time again, but Pequods will not give up their source. On top of the sausage, this sauce was hands down my favorite. I like a heavy sauces pizza and the robust flavor that this brought to the table was second to none! Then when you think you have had it all, you get to the crust! The chef in the back sprinkles cheese on the crust before it hits the oven. When it comes out you have this crispy crust with a Caramelized cheese on top and WOW! Last spot on the tour was Coalfire. Now this is not your Chicago style Deep Dish or your tavern style but this is more of a traditional looming NY pie but cooked in a coal fire oven. Danny told us the oven is normally up to 900 degrees and can cook the pizza in under 90 seconds, and he wasn't lying. Pizza came out quick, hot and looking magnificent. Out of all the pizza, this one definitely had the best presentation. You take a slice and between the grease of the cheese, the saltiness of the pepperoni and the creaminess of the fresh Ricotta on top, this pizza is something special! Now that I've spoken about the pizza, let's talk about the tour. And by that I mean Danny. A pizza tour without a fantastic guide is just a few restaurants, but Danny was INCREDIBLE! The knowledge he possessed, not just about pizza but about the city was incredible. You can tell his passion isn't just pizza, it's about his community. He had facts for days, jokes, personality and made 4 hours and 3lbs or pizza feel like a casual outing amongst friends. I would recommend this pizza tour to ANYBODY i know visiting the city, but they HAVE to get Danny. I feel like anybody else will fall short. While visiting Chicago on a work trip I was lucky enough to attend the adventures of the Chicago Pizza Tour with our fantastic host, Jonathan! Before telling you all about the stops you just have to know, this guy knows it all. This tour is not just pizza, it's all that and a bag of chips. He answered all our architecture and historical questions while also throwing in little fun facts I would have never thought to ask. He was hilarious and made even the traffic a good time. Between the driver and tour guide, this company seriously knows how to hire - we had the best time thanks to these guys! Pizza! In a 2-3 hour span we stopped at 3 different pizza spots, all with different style pizza, toppings, and stories behind the buildings/recipes. We had deep dish, thin crust, and pan pizza. My favorite of the 3 was probably the thin crust at Flo & Santos! Each stop had free drink options including the wine and beer lists, from what I remember. Everything was magnificent and we were absolutely stuffed by the end of the night. The last stop even gave us little pizookie style, ooey gooey cookies with whip cream and chocolate sauce - the decadent cherry on top to a food and fun filled evening. I would 100% recommend doing this tour to locals and tourists alike. It's a great way to learn about the city in a fun manner and stuff your faces for a good price. I also thought it to be a good team building experience and would recommend it to companies as a group work activity. Sure, you can see some pretty cool architecture by boat, but where else can you gorge on pizza while also learning facts about Chicago's history? Our tour was led by Jon who had a no nonsense, Chi-Town spunk that kept us entertained the whole night. We went to three different spots (Pequod's, Flo & Santos, and Pizano's) for three different types of pizza (and dessert at the end!). They picked us up at our hotel and along the way, Jon told us storied tales of pizza family rivalries, neighborhood distinctions, and more. It was fun, even when caught in traffic! I loved trying the varied pizzas. From authentic deep dish at Pizano's, to pizza with sauerkraut "tavern style" at Flo & Santos, I was so full but couldn't let any slice pass me without trying. Pequod's was probably my favorite but I'm truly a pizza egalitarian. When you reserve, you can pay extra to also have drinks along the way or pay as you go. At every stop, our food was ready pretty soon after we arrived. These people know what they're doing to ensure a smooth tour that doesn't leave you out all night. If you are visiting Chicago for a finite amount of time, and are feeling anxiety about not hitting the "right" pizza joints: this is the perfect solution. We went to places that represent the three major styles of "Chicago" pizza: "pan" (it's deep, but not quite deep dish @ Pequods), "tavern" (crackery, sliced into squares/rectangels @ Flo & Santos), and "deep dish" (you know this one @ Pizano's). In-between visits, Jon told us a ton of facts and figures about pizza, and about Chicago. The three styles above are just one example. Jon is charismatic, friendly, surly, and likeable...all at the same time. He also has the real-deal Chicago accent. You also get to get your drink on at every stop. The four spots we went all different styles of pizza, but all very good choices.
