    Biggie Blue Eyes

At first, we weren't sure of taking this tour, but we are so glad we did. It was a fantastic tour, and we had a wonderful tour guide, Biggie Blue Eyes. He was funny, entertaining and full of Chicago history. We appreciate his humor, experience and knowledge. He engaged with everyone on the tour. We learned so much about the original gangsters like the infamous Al Capone, Dion O'Banion, John Dillinger, George "Bugs" Moran, and "Diamond Jim" Colosimo and many more. We have heard and watched movies about these incredible characters, but to see the places they lived and made history is a treat. I highly recommend this tour especially with Biggie Blue Eyes as a your guide. The bonus is you get to learn about various neighborhoods in Chicago, like Chinatown, Lincoln Park, and Pilsen. He will also point wonderful landmarks within the city.

    Pretty cool bus tour

Tour meets outside of rock & roll McDonalds on Clark. The tour left promptly on time. Our bus was half full. The tour showed us several areas in Chicago and we learned about the gangster history of this city. Overall 3.5 stars. The mic on the tour kept going out towards the end.

Marie was phenomenal! Her humor and knowledge of the city was appreciated by the entire bus load of people. We HIGHLY recommend taking this tour!

So many locations where criminal activity occurred

All of our family that came to Chicago for my godchild's wedding reception left before noon on the next day. Hubby and I found ourselves wanting something to get out and do. It has rained all morning and we weren't sure how long it was going to continue so we opted for an activity where we would be protected from the elements. If you've been to Chicago, you know there are probably a million things that you can do that are fun and exciting! Since I am convinced that there was mafia in my family history, this crime tour really peaked my interest. It was a tour and it was on a very nice bus that was comfortable and had plenty of hook ups for phones etc. in case you wanted to be able to charge to take pictures . It was also one of the tours that was advertised as funny with the tour guide being well-versed in the criminal activities in the early 1900s all the way up to about the 1960s. Our tour guide was dressed for the role. He was extremely knowledgeable and witty. The tour lasted approximately two hours. It started at a place where we all met up and checked in. Most of us had gotten our tickets online but they were also available from our tour guide. Our bus Driver was also fantastic!! I'm not sure how he managed to drive around in the thick Chicago traffic. Kudos-kudos!!!! Our tour guide gave a lot of history, and many of the names were unfamiliar to me however, some of the biggest criminals and mobsters like Al Kapone- I had certainly heard of and read about. This review is not going to be full of detail because you need to experience it for yourself !! Our tour guide even had a little game planned at the end of a couple questions and answers with prizes. I felt he did everything possible to keep us entertained!! We definitely recommend it ! Why did we choose this crime tour???? as there are several.... This is one of the oldest and longest operating tours. We felt like we got a lot of bang for the buck !!!!

Why this tour: 1. Marie, the tour guide. - entertaining and knowledgeable. She made this tour fun! Loved how she stayed in character throughout the tour. 2. The crew - The tour guide and driver were professional and nice. They were on time. They were organized. After the tour, Marie answered tourist questions and made recommendations for other activities and restaurants. 3. Comfort on the bus. - Clean, comfortable seats. Did not smell on the bus. Air conditioned. 4. Location of pick up. - It was very convenient. We parked in a prepaid garage nearby. The pick up location was next to a McDonald's where you can use the restrooms, buy a drink, and stay cool inside before the tour. There are many restaurant options nearby.

We had a blast! Our guide was the best she was witty, put in a great show and we learned a lot! We learned her name is Katey and she absolutely made the tour! A super fun way to see the whole city and you get a lot of gangster and mob history.

I took my mom to Chicago for the first time and she loves a good crime show so I thought a gangster tour would be right up her alley. I did some research online to make sure I picked a good one, and one with a vehicle. I knew we would be walking the city a lot so I wanted to make sure we had a break from the chilly streets. It was easy to get my tickets online ahead of time and pick the date/time. There was a mix-up with my ticket and a tour a week earlier so the office called me to confirm my tickets - the lady on the phone was nice and explained the confusion, which didn't really affect my purchase. I only make note of this because otherwise I wouldn't have talked to the office and she was very nice and pleasant so I think that should be noted. We arrived at the pick-up location (which was moved slightly down the block but communicated well). *I also received a reminder text the night before* The guys were really fun and ready to get moving! We loaded up the bus, chatted a bit and were off! The whole tour is not only informative about the Chicago of the past, but they also throw in some current information and fun facts. We were able to see parts of the city we wouldn't have seen on our own and the whole experience is pretty interactive. The tour guides were AMAZING! So fun and funny, great (cheesy) jokes, silly sing-a-longs and lots of information. My mom LOVED it and we both had a really great time. I'd go again!

To be honest it was still a little expensive considering they were driving from Wilmette to Northfield to Glencoe, but less than the other: $840 for a 3 hour minimum for a party bus of 28. We also didn't need it for the entire 3 hours, but the options I found were either one way or 3-4 hour minimums so this was the best deal. I found their communication to be stellar both via email and text. The bus driver was on time and the kids had no trouble locating the party bus when they came out of the dance and I've heard it was one of many party busses. A few of my daughter's friends hopped on for the way home and commented that this bus was way nicer than the one they took to the dance from another company. Overall, it was a success. The parents could have easily driven these kids ourselves, but the party bus elevated the experience and the kids all seemed to enjoy the VIP treatment.

However, she insisted that it would be worth our while and so I agreed to climb on the bus. And it was the absolutely right decision, because the tour was excellent. In fact, it wasn't just a tour of Hyde Park. It included the surrounding neighborhoods of Washington Park, Kenwood, Jackson Park, and Woodlawn. Since this was a UChicago sponsored event much of the information related to the University's investment and involvement in the area. Our tour guide and founder of Chicago Detours, Amanda, is herself a graduate of UChicago and thus she had some additional insight into the relationship with the community. Though the 75-minute tour felt a little slow-going at times, there was much to learn about the vibrant but sometimes troubled history of the area. There were some technical difficulties and the TV system on the bus ended up not working. Mr. Frank Calabrese Jr was very professional and good-humored about the situation. He offered everyone on the bus the opportunity to come back free of charge so that we may have the full experience with the photos he had been intending to show us. He proceeded to do the tour without the presentation, which honestly was great in itself. He is a very good story-teller, and had a great narrative. He had notes with him but only referenced them a few times to make sure he wasn't forgetting anything. Everything was super authentic and off the cuff. I loved that we went around Chicago and we were able to get glimpses of how the city was like in the 60s-90s. What made this tour so great was that these stories were first-hand. It didn't come from someone who spent hours studying the history; this was his real life. He was very genuine about his experiences, and his anecdote about his kids at the very end of the tour made me tear up a bit. He even invited us to stay for happy hour at the Chop House to have a drink with him to talk. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, regardless of whether you know the mob history or not. I personally didn't know too much, and still was captivated by his stories. He does have a book (which I definitely intend to read) and a movie in the works!

I met Mr. Calabrese Jr. weeks ago when he presented some of his intriguing life stories at an event at Chicago Chop House, and I knew that evening that I had to book and experience the real deal, aka his bus tours. My friend and I booked a tour for a Friday afternoon recently that started at 2pm, and though there was a bit of a delay because our bus's TV monitors weren't working, Mr. Calabrese Jr. smoothly filled the time with some behind-the-scenes stories he said he usually doesn't share on the tour. I was hooked immediately. To be honest, before this tour, I had no idea the stories his family was involved in were so high-profile (I even talked to my family afterward, and they ALL knew every detail and were mad I didn't invite them! Sorry family!). But even while he showed us news clips, a lot of photos, and told all of his stories, he remained modest, which made the entire experience endearing. Mr. Calabrese Jr. is super charismatic and a great storyteller, and you can tell he genuinely loves telling his story and showing everyone around the neighborhoods where he grew up, and where big moments happened in history to people who were in "the life." I truly enjoyed this tour and I recommend it for anyone who wants an real, honest, non-theatrical recap of Chicago's mob history. The Family Secrets Tour is engaging and delightful. Second, they put a green light on each kayak on each so it can be seen at night on the river (we did the fireworks tour). I am not exaggerating when I say half of the kayaks on the tour lights were out on the way to the fireworks. That made me feel unsafe and anxious. It also made it more difficult to figure out who our tour guides were because at least two tour guides' lights went out as well. Third, they directed us to "park" (not sure how else to put it) for the fireworks in a spot that the other kayak tour groups seemed to very clearly know was to be avoided because a giant boat was going to dock there. This resulted in our group being yelled at by another kayaking group that we should leave for our own safety because a boat was going to dock there. Then the boat was descending upon us and we had to play kayak-frogger across the river in a mad dash at the last minute while the giant boat honked and played sirens because we were in its way. Again, felt very unsafe. For a person looking for a a casual, fun kayaking experience, this whole thing was too stressful. Would not recommend. Other kayaking places we saw on the water seemed more organized and safety-conscious.
