My folks and I visited in the summer and had a lovely day together. The scenery is beautiful, the trails are well-maintained, and the park facilities are nice. There were a lot of people when we visited--I'd say somewhere between high and medium traffic on trails. If you're wanting a solo moment with nature, I don't think you'll find it here. But it is pretty and a nice little break from metro life or suburbia. read more

Nice place, a little over hyped up in my opinion. We've wanted to come check out this park for a while now because of all the rave about it, and I gotta say I don't think it was completely worth it. The area is a little old county, nothing good around it, had a hard time finding a good place to eat, the gift shop was closed, and the lady at the front desk didn't really know the park in order to give us legit info on it. In order to see cedar falls, we hiked the 3 miles but there is parking right next to it. The sceneries were just okay, again I think people just hopped up this park to us a lot and we were just expecting to be super wowed! I'd still recommend it, but it isn't super duper WOW! This place is great! Beautiful lodge with two-sided fireplaces, nice lounge, big terraces both open and covered. The one-bedroom suite with balcony is gigantic. We were in Room 225, view is of woods, I think the even numbered rooms on the other side might have better views, but the view wasn't bad by any means. The food was much better than we'd been expecting. I would definitely come back and recommend this to anyone who enjoys this type of lodging/vacation experience. read more

Stopped here after a spontaneous day hike and night stay in a cabin nearby. Didn't know what to expect but was NOT dissappointed! This is the prettiest hike I've done in quite a while. You really can make the hike as long or as short as you like as there are several different exits back to the visitor center along the way. The hike down the cavern isn't very taxing, mostly the hike back up some long stairs to get back up to the visitor center was what killed me (seriously, I'm pretty fit but this really showed me I need to work on my cardio!) The cavern is gorgeous on the inside! HUGE rock walls with all sorts of different texture, water and waterfalls throughout! I was bummed my phone had died or I would have taken a ton of pictures! ANYONE that has a chance to stop here, I would DEFINITELY recommend! read more

It doesn't get better than this! I don't even know where to start! Hocking Hills has easily become one of my all time favorite spots. I've been coming here for over a decade, no matter where I lived in the U.S., I've always found a way back. The place is absolutely breathtaking! There are so many fun hiking trails to venture off to. Whether you're new and stick to the paths, or a seasoned Hocking Hills vet, there is always some place fun to explore. Pro Tip - come bright and early in the morning to avoid a plethora of visitors. There's something so peaceful about walking through the caves in the early morning without another person in sight! My favorite spots include the Rock House, Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, and Cedar Falls. No matter the season, its always amazing. There's usually plenty of parking, there are restrooms scattered across the park, and there are a few little stores to grab snacks, firewood for camping, drinks, etc. I have stayed in a few different cabins and I couldn't complain one bit. This year I celebrated my 30th birthday there for a long weekend and it was the best decision I ever made. I can't wait to see you again soon! read more

We took a walk back to the falls and it was absolutely beautiful. We were going to walk back to Old Man's Cave, but after stopping at the porta potties (why are there no real toilets?!?) I was too disgusted to go back in, for fear of having to use them again. A good place for getting exercise. Hocking Hills is a massive state park. There's several distinct parts spread over 10 square miles or so. Many natural structures and picture opportunities. Waterfalls are a popular gathering site. It is very large which helps the crowds spread out a but. It still seems like it gets crowded everywhere. This is especially true on holidays when there's nothing open so it's the only thing to do around here. It can be hard finding a parking spot even though there's multiple large lots everywhere. The most popular time is during the fall to see the changing colors, so it's almost impossible to find somewhere. It's best known for its caves. The most popular is Old Man's Cave, which is close to the visitor's center. This has the largest parking lot and it's still hard to find a spot. It has a smaller parking area across the street, but that can get filled up too before long. The park has many waterfalls. Old Man's Cave is located between the Lower and Upper Falls. The rest of the park is farther away, like a few miles. Ash Cave isn't as busy. It's located on the southern end of the park. Cedar Falls is just north. These areas have their own parking lots, so you can save time and energy by driving there. Best way to get here is from the Logan exit. Get off at Route 664. Take it to the visitor's center, see what's around there, and then either hike or drive to the other parts. read more

Beautiful state park with an abundance of green, animals, rock formations, and doable hikes. The popular hikes were relaxing and not challenging (~1 mile or less), though they did also have additional, more difficult options available. For reference, there were a good amount of people dressed in casual clothing and shoes not typically seen during hikes. I also enjoyed the park because there are accessible trails to include everyone in the fun! Nature is meant for everyone and it was heartwarming to see that anyone, with or without personal challenges, can enjoy the park to the fullest. I do wish I had more time in the park - only visited for a day trip - but it was a memorable first time. I completed 3 trails (recommended. Old Man's, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave), explored the gorge, and learned about the history. read more

Hocking Hills has beautiful scenery! My favorite parts were the main waterfall area even if it was dried up when I went. The trails were kind of steep and some of my older family members were struggling. There was a race happening so the trails were really crowded and people were not courteous of slow walkers. I only took one trail which was about 2 miles which took us 2 hours with stops to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. I would suggest going early to avoid the crowds. There is little phone service in certain areas and the newer nature center is really nice and includes WiFi. They have staff in there to help with gifts, maps and what to expect on the trails. read more

The scenery in this park is absolutely amazing! I drove 5.5 hours from Southwest Michigan and will definitely return again; I didn't get to see all the main hot spots in the 2 afternoons that I spent here. Every corner I turned, I wanted to take more pictures! But the in-person views are amazing and the pictures just don't cut it for much of what you'll see. The cliffs, the trees, the trickling water, the bubbling brooks, the staircases carved into the cliffs, even the man-made staircases -- everything was so beautiful and so picturesque. Some areas were like a fairytale land! We arrived at 3pm on Friday afternoon of Memorial Weekend and parked at the Old Man's Cave visitors center. There was plenty of parking and it wasn't very crowded. Then we returned on Saturday around 3pm and there were cars lined up on the side of the road leading into the park. I don't know if it's like that on every Saturday, or just because it was a holiday weekend. Be prepared to lose your cell service about 15 minutes away from the park. Put your phone on airplane mode while you are there so your battery doesn't drain - save that battery for taking photos! Make sure you use the bathroom before you begin your hike if you're making a full loop between sights. The only restrooms are porta-potties in the parking areas. You should grab a map from the ranger booth before you get started, but there are signs in the park that show you trail options and distance, and the trails are color-coded with paint marks on the trees. Despite that, there were still some challenges with figuring out the signage and trail directions. On our first afternoon, the loop from Old Man's Cave to Whispering Cave and back took 4 hours. On the 2nd afternoon, the loop from Old Man's cave to Cedar Falls and back took 4 hours. We are young and fit and it still took us this long to go about 4-5 miles in 4 hours! Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots. Trails and steps can be slippery and muddy. Pack a backpack with water bottle, bug spray, small snacks, sanitizer and band-aids (just in case), chap stick, extra pair of socks, maybe even a small towel. You won't really need sunscreen. For the most part, it's pretty shaded. It even downpoured for a few minutes while we were at Old Man's Cave, but the trees block much of the rain from coming through. We hid under a cliff overhang until the rain passed. Old Man's Cave: Once you get past the actual cave, be prepared for some rough terrain. Nothing too crazy if you're well and fit, but it rained before we got there and the trails were very muddy. So we climbed on the sides of the trails (slanted, leafy slopes) -- you need steady footing and good balance to traverse narrow paths, stepping on tree roots, and climbing over obstacles like big rocks and fallen logs. For this reason I do not recommend the trail between Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave for kids, dogs, elderly, strollers, etc. (I think this was the red trail). Cedar Falls: We walked from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls and it took 2 hours. (and 2 hours back on a different return path). There is an awesome waterfall that we thought was THE Cedar Falls and it was not -- so keep going! You can also park at Cedar Falls and get to the big waterfall in about 10 minutes (down a lot of stairs). If you keep going about 20 more minutes, you'll get to the other waterfall. There are no trash cans on the trails, be prepared to carry your trash with you! read more

We just spent five days in the cabins at Hocking Hills. This sprawling, mega-sized state park is interesting and offers a lot of activities for all ages. The Good: There are plenty of trails (although you'll likely need to drive to get to them all unless you plan to hike all day). We hiked through caves, along canyon rims, past waterfalls, alongside creeks, over bridges, and beside lakes. Plenty of variety. I also have never seen a state park with so many businesses inside. There is no shortage of lodging (from tents to lodges and inns), entertainment (ropes courses, saunas in the woods, and petting zoos to name a few), restaurants and grocery stores, and artisans. You definitely don't need to be worried about forgetting to pack something. And the cabins we rented from the park were perfectly adequate. Tiny in size, but well furnished and had consistent hot water (very necessary after spending all day outdoors). They also come with fire rings and ancient charcoal grills. There are also huge shelters at almost every hiking site, so bring ALL your friends to party. The Bad: Say goodbye to steady phone service. Spotty at best is the name of the game, and they don't have wi-fi even for the cabins. The maps were often inaccurate or inconsistent (seriously, we got three maps that all said different things). And be prepared to spend ample time in the car as there isn't much of a direct route to, well, anything in the park. Nothing we found was challenging for seasoned hikers or outdoorsmen, but the benefit is that the trails are generally kid friendly (and we have kids so.... Win for us!) As you can see above, the good far outweighs the bad. We had a great time exploring this unique state park. read more

One of the reasons I love Ohio is because of our beautiful hiking spots and nature. Hocking Hills is a truly amazing spot for those looking for a challenge! It is a must-see and do for anyone who's into trails. This was probably one of the most difficult hikes I've ever done. At one point we were climbing up the side of a huge rock, relying on tree roots to climb up! Definitely not for the faint of heart! I guarantee will be muddy, scraped up, and sweaty by the end of it! The views that you get out of this park are breathtaking and so worth it, though. There's a few waterfalls, amazing rock formations, caves, stone stairways, and much more to see! The path at the beginning around Old Man's Cave can be a bit crowded and overwhelmed with people, but once you really get out there it's a very peaceful time. Although the trail may say it's only 5 miles, you'll end up walking a few times that factoring in the hills and winding paths. It took my family and I around 5-6 hours until we met our threshold... and we had plenty more to go! 100% recommend! read more

Beautiful hiking spot, clearly marked paths though the map prior to heading out isn't extremely clear. Parking at Old Man's Cave lot (arrive early!) and hiking to Cedar Falls on the loop (light blue out, red back) is about 5 miles. The walk out (light blue) took us along the water and was 2 miles, took 1 hour. Nothing difficult, probably not ideal for young kids though. A lot of ups and downs with the rocks that determine the path. The walk back (red) was much easier, the 3 miles took us 40 minutes. Just rolling hills aside from one pretty steep hill. The cave is cool, waterfalls are pretty impressive for the area and there are several areas to swim on a hot day. Very nice bathroom facilities on the Old Man's Cave side along with gift shop and information. read more

What an amazing overnight stay in Hocking Hills State Park Cabins. First off, this was my first time staying in a cabin at a State Park. I was so impressed with how nice the cabins were (they were recently updated) and how easy it was to find them. The cabins are nicely spread out so you have some privacy and there's also a screened in porch the back of each one, facing into the woods. So a couple of things you might find helpful. First off, we stayed in Cabin 36 - about 5 cabins in on the right when you enter the "cabin area." There is no swimming pool in the cabin area (the lodge burned down in 2016 and the pool area was also damaged and has not been re-opened. There is a small pool by the campground, but that is a few miles up the road. I wouldn't even bother. The hiking in the area is so gorgeous you won't even need it - and one of the trailheads (Whispering Cave) is just down the hill from the cabins too! Max occupancy is 6 people and it's really fine for this number. I wouldn't recommend trying to squeeze in extras as the cabin is set up for 6 - dishes, utensils, cooking pots, a potholder, kitchen towel, and dishcloth etc. There is a coffee maker in each cabin too (bring filters and coffee!). There's a small stove/oven, large refrigerator, good-sized pantry, and microwave. I would say there's enough of the basics to take care of the 6 of you. There's also plenty of bars of hand soap and toilet paper for a several day stay. Things I would make sure you bring so you can save yourself a trip to the store - a bundle of firewood along with matches/lighter - you can get these for cheap just outside of the park along the road in a few spots. Each cabin has a picnic table by the fire ring, but you may want to bring camp chairs to sit on. As far as indoor things, I recommend you bring dish soap, a sponge, paper towels, napkins, paper plates, shampoo/conditioners, etc. You may want a few extra towels too, but that's based on what your plans are. We were there for just one night, so what they supplied was just fine. There is NO WIFI at all and pretty much no cell service. There is limited WiFi at the checkin building a few miles down the road if you need to make a call. There's cable t.v. in the cabins. You can adjust your own thermostat as needed as well, but our AC was really loud, so keep that in mind. In one room, there's a double bed and wardrobe and the other room had a double bed/twin bunk set up. There is also a separate twin bed and another wardrobe. Throughout the cabin, there were hooks for you to hang jackets, towels to dry, etc. If you have a number of "devices" you might want to bring a charger strip. Some of the outlets in our cabin were not working so it would've been nice to have an outlet strip to charge our phones (which we only used for photos) and watches. The bottom line is that if you are staying here, your purpose should be to disconnect from the world, relax, and enjoy nature. Bring a deck of cards or a few board games and you're sure to make some excellent memories with your friends and family. read more

This is probably THE best state park to go to in Ohio! The trails aren't too difficult to hike and are mostly all paved or well packed down/even. Depending on the trial(s) you go on I would bring water and snacks. The visitor center only has some vending machines but there's a water fountain there to fill up bottles. There also is a dog portion of the watering fountain on the bottom. You can get a free map at the visitor center. The trails are easy for most dogs too. This place is worth going to for a solid half day or longer, depending on your hiking experience and time. read more

We loved hiking the various parks associated with Hocking Hills. They take very good care of the area and the trails, although some more than others. Old Mans Cave has a new visitor center going in so there's a bit of construction, but easy to get around. Ash Cave is an easy quick hike. We also braved rock house and Cantwell but the recent rain had taken a toll on some bits of the trails making them difficult in spots. The gorge trail for conkles hollow was very nice with its paved pathway that leads to a waterfall. A gorgeous area to visit and hike, just be prepared with weather and bring water/snacks. read more

This place had been in my bucket list for quite awhile, and we very much enjoyed our hike here and plan to visit again and see more of the area. We visited in December, and I imagine the park would have far more appeal in the summer or fall (it would be amazing to see the color change here), but then you'd be battling crowds and I imagine the curvy road on the way in -- with one lane of traffic in each direction -- is probably a monster at peak season. Waterfalls-wise, it seemed like a slightly less spectacular Turkey Run (if you haven't visited this Southern Indiana gem, add it to your Yelp Collections right meow!), But it also had some large caverns that added another element to the awe-inspiring vistas. I'm sure it's epically awesome here at the very start of spring when water falls are still frozen but starting to melt. None of the waterfalls here inspire Niagara-esque awe, but there are lots of them in varying sizes and it's a pretty doable hike to move around and see many of them in an hour or two. It sounded like there were some longer hikes and some caving to be done in the area, so we look forward to exploring more next time we visit our friend who lives about an hour away. read more

Hocking Hill State Park is a wonderful place to explore and visit. The primary attraction are the trail system within the park that range from easy stroll to some serious cardio workout going up and down hills and ravines to incredible scenic views of caves, cliff, waterfalls and woodlands. This visit we checked out one of the newest trails to Wispering Cave, a short trail with a lot of elevation changes on your way to a massive sandstone cave. The park system does a great job with signage,marking trails and parking by the trail heads. Stop by the visitor center and pick up a map , talk to the rangers and plot out your day in the woods. Best advice is to have a good pair of broken in boots, a camera and go exploring. The best time to visit is anytime. read more

Wow, this place is super breath taking and awesome. We spent four days here and we had a lot more things that we could have done. I really wanted to stay and have some more time hiking the trails and taking brilliant photographs. It is a photographers dream. People are correct about the people in Ohio, no one wears masks, or does social distancing, very strange. In our hotel none of the workers wore masks. The gift shop does not have any regular hours, which kind of sucks. The trails require a good bit of dexterity and agility to get through without falling over. Free outdoor entertainment for hours! This place is amazing. My girlfriends and I hiked for hours and hours. The warm temperatures didn't slow us down because of the cool temps under all the foliage. Some areas were quite crowded. We recommend hitting the popular areas early to beat the crowds. (Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave). Hiking shoes strongly recommended! Bring snacks and water. This remote area offers little in food and drink choices. Typically the pet-free trails are the more challenging ones. read more

So many beautiful views it's hard to take it all in the first time so I went around twice. My reason for 3 stars... this place is way too commercialized and construction is everywhere, I don't like that a lot of areas are blocked off. Gorgeous area! Would love to see the trails a little better maintained (lots of fallen trees across paths, broken stairs, damage trail maps) but that certainly didn't deter from us enjoying the beauty of this park as we had other maps and are able to climb over/around. What I think would be the most helpful for the park to improve would be the maps available. A color-coded all-inclusive map for all of the hiking trails. It would be awesome to have one side that shows how the trails in the Old Man's Cave / Cedar Falls / Ash Cave / Hemlock Bridge / Whispering Cave area link (there's a photo attached that shows this - we found it at a trailhead) and then the individual trails on the other. A black and white map that has trail head locations on one side and the individual trails on the other is available at the welcome center and that helps some but the lack of color coding makes it difficult to use. The Hocking Hills app (white background, green hiker) has maps you can access even when you have no cell service - which is often in this area! There are discrepancies between these two versions of the maps but nothing monumental. When planning your hikes, make sure to pay attention to if the trail loops back or if it is an in and out trail as the estimated time and distance will be double that listed. The attached individual maps are from the app - sharing to hopefully help others. I'd recommend a minimum age of 6 (and that 6 year old needs to be good at paying attention to their surroundings) for the majority of this area as there are a lot of spots that are slippery/have tons of tripping hazards and it would be near impossible to carry a little one... unless you stuck to just the Accessible trails.... then all ages would be fine. We brought our dogs to most of the trails (both are a larger breed and spry) but not to Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House as those are a bit trickier to navigate. Saw a lot of people with smaller breed dogs needing to carry their pups a lot. Note: dogs are not allowed at Conkle's Hollow nor Natural Rock Bridge. read more

It's about time I finally wrote a review for Hocking Hills! This is one of my favorite outdoor places in Ohio -- it is especially beautiful in the fall when all the leaves are changing color, but I would visit Hocking Hills any time of the year. I love it when it has just rained, and the creeks and waterfalls are all flowing -- sometimes during dry seasons, there waterfalls and such are not as impressive. Although I have not visited Hocking Hills in the winter, I heard that several of the falls freeze over into beautiful formations. I suppose I'll have to visit Hocking Hills again to find out :) There are 6 main parts of the park that have parking and places to start hiking. Each of entrances these main parts (i.e. Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls) are located less than 1 - maybe 2 miles away to their destination. However, several of these main parts connect to each other via 3-6 mile trails and it's such a nice, relaxing way to spend your afternoon. The trails are decently well-marked; however, I would be sure to either have a map on you (you can easily get one at the Old Man's Cave visitor center), or look at the posted maps if you are trying to hike to a farther away place in the park. There is very spotty internet service at the periphery of the park, and basically no service when you are in the forest, just FYI. The trails are also very well maintained and clean. There are quite a few families with kids and dog walkers, but it never feels crowded. read more

What a hidden treasure right here in Ohio! I'm not sure how we missed this place all whole life living right nearby in Cincinnati, but taking a morning drive and visiting the trails at HH was awesome. We enjoyed Old Man, Ash, Cedar, and Whispering on this visit. Trails are well marked and the Forest Rangers offered great advice on how best to enjoy the park and trails. This update is dedicated to the newly shared trails in Hocking Hills - Hemlock Bridge Trail and Whispering Cave! As a huge fan of this gorgeous area, I couldn't wait to see the "new" recess cave. It's large and has a small waterfall, and according to the signage, it sparkles in the moonlight! Accessing Whispering Cave requires use of the Hemlock Bridge Trail, in order to get to cave's specific trail. The signage was excellent at the split-off, so you knew exactly where to go. What a great addition to the must-see spots in the area! Also, the renovated cabins are fabulous! We were very impressed with how nicely they were furnished and the amenities offered. We would definitely stay there again. read more

We went camping at the primitive hike-in campsite number H 15. It wasn't the best pick... it was sloped enough that it was uncomfortable to sleep, and it was pretty open to the pathway and campsite 14. It was a good size though and very clean. The trees were beautiful and there were butterflies everywhere. It took about 20-25 minutes to walk up to that site. In my opinion, any site after 8 is too far. 8 or before is manageable... and being close to the car is a huge plus. Sites 3/4 looked very secluded and less than a five minute walk. In the parking lot there was a dumpster and a pump for potable water which was very convenient. The pathway to the campsites is a large, clean, well maintained, gravel walkway. The "bathrooms" were very gross in my opinion... but you can't expect much more. The inside of the toilets were filled with bugs. You can drive up to the main campground( less than 5 min away) to shower/use the bathroom which was nice! I would recommend bringing flip flops for the shower :) The camp store came in very handy. It had the nicest bathrooms available, trash bags,snacks,firewood,ice,fire starters, etc. Overall the campground really was beautiful, but next time I would pick a site closer to the car. read more

Hocking Hills is a must see. We hiked for 3 days and didn't see it all. All of the hikes are near each other, so easy traveling times. A couple are paved and good for wheelchairs or strollers. I recommend doing the gorge trails and the rim if you have time. Bring a change of clothes if you want to walk in the rivers and under the waterfalls. Cantwell Cliffs was my favorite because of playing in the waterfall there. A natural haven just a short distance from Columbus. I come here every winter on a sunny day for respite and a breath of fresh air to wait out the rest of the cold season. Believe it or not, if you wear a decent coat, you will not be cold what so ever if you come here for a hike. The cabins around range from luxury to affordable, and I have had good experiences from many different cabin companies. There is civilization nearby, from small general stores to downtown Logan. But when you're in the park itself, it's easy to get lost in the beauty and wonder of nature. I'm glad that places like this still exist. PLEASE DO NOT LITTER!!! read more

Best hiking ever! Highly recommend. The ranking of the trails is accurate and it is very pet friendly.

Absolutely stunning, such a gorgeous place to visit. After living in alaska, I thought it would take a lot to impress me when it comes to natural beauty, but this was completely different. It was such an easy hike to get the the cave, and so beautiful. Not to mention all the water falls, tunnels, and the devils bathtub is so cool looking. The visitor center is really nice as well, and the rangers are so helpful. We took our 11,10, and 8 year olds, and they loved it. Short drive from Columbus, it's an absolute must. read more
