    Along the Hemlock trail
    Jason C.

I was very hesitant to leave a review for this park on Yelp. The reason being is when you find a gem as beautiful as this, with so few people to spoil it, you almost want to keep it to yourself! I've visited Clear Creek twice so far to walk the trails, and both times I've rarely encountered another person. On my latest trek along the Hemlock trail, I passed a solitary woman sitting on a bench, singing quietly. She was obviously enjoying the beauty and solitude of the forest as much as I was! The Hemlock trail winds up and down several hills, at one point tracing the boundary of a deep ravine. The entire trail takes about 45 minutes to walk, and it's a pretty good workout. Once in the forest, you'll notice there isn't any road noise. The only sounds you'll hear are creeking trees, the soft burbling of a brook, songs of birds and the occasional rustling of leaves as gentle breezes blow through the forest. No dogs barking, no loud music - just you and nature. Sound idyllic? It is. Being only a short 40 minute drive from downtown Columbus, Clear Creek Metro Park is a special place that'll keep me coming back again and again.

Trailhead for the Benua Loop Trail

We were excited to check out the section of the park that more recently opened to the public, the Benua Area, on our latest visit to the gorgeous Clear Creek Metro Park. Accessed via the 1.9 mile Benua Loop Trail, this takes you along a stream, through the forest, past some nice stone features like those the area is known for, up and around to a dam where the lovely Lake Emily is located. A 0.4 mile spur leads to Green Mansions, where the ruins of the Benua family home is located. A dip down in the trail where there is a lot of hemlock coverage results in a noticeable cool area. The family donated and sold land to the park, and they had called the area Green Mansions, as explained by signage in the area. A number of picnic tables have been put up near the ruins and on the dam, which are a nice touch. Because the Benua Loop Trail requires crossing the creek, it does close when the water is too high. This is a great addition to Clear Creek Metro Park!

Love this place! It's so scenic and well kept. I enjoy the 2.5 mile trail up the huge hill for the views and the great workout!

There are boulders to climb, outdoor musical instruments to play, a treehouse to play pretend in (and is wheelchair accessible!), a merry-go-round, swings, a traditional playground structure with slides, and lots more. The playground area is lined with wood chips. There is also lots of space to run around, and lots of trees. Like the name of the park suggests, this is a very sensory-friendly park, and there are nature stations set up all around where you can use your senses to explore. There is also a short, paved trail that goes around the park, which is wide and smooth enough for strollers and wheelchairs. The trail goes by a creek, which is nice. As of right now, this is the only sensory-friendly park in the state of Ohio! It's definitely worth a visit.

Along the path are a variety of interactive stations that are also designed to be accessible. If you start near the entry sign, you'll find a Little Free Library, which, on our recent visit, was loaded with a lot of great kids options. Just ahead is a variety of benches and a little music garden, featuring musical instruments that can be played, and you can also interact with the Rough Bark Tactile Display to learn more about different tree barks. A little further down are the cutest animal looking instruments that can also be used. As you continue down the path, you find a swingset with a variety of swings that include both traditional and accessible options. There's a nice little shaded bench area with information about the creek, Fetter's Run, that can be seen from the location. As you proceed along, a very exciting find is the Treehouse, which is built within the forest trees as opposed to up in one, which allows a wheelchair ramp to make it accessible. This overlooks the creek and has things to explore, like neat nature art and a second floor (not accessible) with a fire pole. At the end of the path is a shelter house with picnic tables and nearby grills. Most, if not all, of the signage included Braille translations, as well. There is a large parking lot here, but I do note that this is located behind a school, so I'm not sure how that would affect parking for a visit during a school day.

The trails are well maintained and range from easy to challenging. The trails are dog friendly, but please pick up after your puppy. My friend and I stayed at a nearby campground for a week and hiked every day with our two dogs. We arrived early in the morning and hiked different trails. Some of the trails are loops and some are out-and-back. A few of them involve steep climbs, rock stairs, or scrambling up rocks, so consult the free park map for details. The visitor center is very nice, and naturalists are available to answer questions and provide recommendations. Restrooms are clean and well maintained. The campground at Hocking Hills tends to fill up quickly, with reservations being made up to six months in advance. If the campgrounds are full, there are several private campgrounds in the area that are very nice. We actually camped at Campbell's Cove and drove the short distance to Hocking Hills State Park every morning.
