Hobcaw Barony is a historical treasure near historic Georgetown and has been on my SC to-do list for years. You have to make a reservation in advance if you want to participate in the bus tour and visit the historic homes and structures nestled deep in the woods on the property. Your tour begins with an introductory film on the history of the property and how it wound up in the hands of Bernard Baruch and ultimately Belle Baruch his daughter, who used it as a summer retreat. The story of the Baruchs and the globally famous historical figures they entertained at the restored plantation home (including Winston Churchill and FDR) was incredibly interesting and it was hard to imagine such figures making their way to the backwoods of the South Carolina lowcountry. Your tour gives you entry into the partially restored plantation home as well as allows you to stop and visit the old village of the descendants of the enslaved peoples who once worked and lived on the property as well as step outside Belle's house as well. You'll also learn about the important conservation work being undertaken there alongside scientists from Clemson University If you're a history or conversation lover I highly recommend planning a visit to Hobcaw Barony (and remember - you'll need to make a reservation in advance!). It's definitely an interesting way to pass a few hours. You'll also be right down the road from Brookgreen Gardens which is definitely worth a visit as well. read more

Beautiful full of history. I'd love to see more of Belle Baruch's story and her house restored.

The tour was fantastic and very informative. Our guide (Jeanie) very interesting and made the two and one half hours seem like nothing. The house tour was terrific. We should be so thankful that places like this are being preserved for others to visit. Stories about the owner and his relationship with such historical figures as Churchill and FDR were outstanding. Your tour cost supports this very important venue. Loved it!!!! read more

This is a wonderful place to discover the history of this area as well as that of Bernard Baruch and Belle Baruch his daughter, who used it as a summer retreat. You must make reservations in advance as you will become part of a small tour group that will be driven by van to various parts of the estate including the homes of the past owners and also those of the slaves that once worked the rice fields. The guides were excellent! This is a trip worth making! There is a gift shop at the visitor center where books and other items can be purchased. I'm so glad we (8 of us) went there! read more

An underrated local landmark. 16k acre property (bigger than Manhattan) that is now a conservation. Book a tour a week in advance, but the welcome center is still worth a visit if you're just passing through. Bernard Baruch is my homeboy. Go Bearcats! read more

Hobcaw Barony was a huge estate connected to Bernard Baruch and daughter, Belle. The tour offered takes you through the acres where Belle built her home and the father built the second house on the property, as well as a plantation community. The two hour tour was filled with stories of the folks who lived and worked there. We were fascinated and quite pleased. Well worth the visit. read more
