We also each got one free drink at the bar! I do wish there had been a little more Christmas feel in the room itself since there wasn't any holiday decor inside, but the hotel and surrounding area were gorgeous. The park right behind it was lit up beautifully with activities, which made it such a fun place to walk through. Parking unfortunately wasn't great since there were only a handful of spots, so we had to park a bit far away and walk back any time we left. The bed was super comfy and cozy, and room service comes from their restaurant so the food was delicious. The woman at the front desk was incredibly sweet and accommodating, and they also have extras like toothbrushes and other essentials if you forget anything. It is on the pricier side, but if you want to treat yourself for a special occasion, I highly recommend it. We're already talking about making it a tradition.

The hotel and restaurant staff are friendly, knowledgeable and fun. They have the best chef and servers--it's always a great dining experience... delicious food and drinks! The Umstead Hotel - I still NEED to know the brand of hand lotion in the ladies' room -- so calming! Next time I visit I'l be booking a spa treatment for sure.

On the wedding day, they even steamed my dress as a surprise, which I really appreciated. Our wedding coordinator was organized and incredibly helpful in managing the timeline, making sure everything ran smoothly and on schedule. One thing to note is that the venue is fairly strict about outside vendors not on their preferred list. Thankfully, our photographer already had liability insurance, but there were a few extra personal touches we had to forgo due to these guidelines. The complimentary suite included in our package was a highlight--spacious, beautifully designed, and perfect for getting ready with friends and family. The bed was very comfortable, though the multi-head shower took some getting used to. We also appreciated the thoughtful touches: handwritten notes, complimentary champagne and chocolates at check-in, and another bottle of champagne along with a small piece from the Michael Aram Anemone collection on our wedding night--such a special gesture. Food for both the cocktail hour and reception met our expectations, and many of our guests had great things to say about the quality and hospitality. Our signature cocktails--the Old Fashioned and espresso martini--were solid and well-made. Overall, they truly took great care of us and helped make our wedding day feel special.

We made our…read morereservations by phone about 3 months in advance and the lovely reservation agent asked if we were celebrating anything. I said our anniversary and she said she'd make a note of it. We also made reservations for Herons, the onsite restaurant, and the Umstead Spa so she had both of our names. At check in, the reservation was under my name and "guest". Hmmm... small error but that can be fixed. But it wasn't. After a terrible dining experience at Herons - that gets its own review - we returned to our room to find that housekeeping had left a little card on the bed addressed to me and guest. Are you serious? We are celebrating our anniversary and we let you know that when making the reservation and at check in. The hotel itself is lovely, the pool was relaxing, the spa was delightful but the staff needs a lot more training if they want to keep their reputation. I did learn after our stay that the Umstead has a new general manager. Hope he can either get things back in shape or is replaced. I did reach out to him following our stay. At first I did not receive a response to my email. When I followed up, I received a curt phone call thanking me for my "constructive criticism". No apology, no what can we do to make this up to you, nothing. We were also surprised at the number of dogs on the property. There is a large lawn behind the hotel for weddings and events and a little sign saying not to allow dogs on the grass. So guests were walking their dogs around the edges and letting them relief themselves in the planting beds. I imagine on a hot day, this probably gets a little stinky. We would go back for the spa, the pool (though if you visit the spa, you can also go to the pool!) and we did enjoy drinks and lunch the next day at the more casual patio bar. Those experiences were great and helped make the weekend not a complete loss. But for the money we paid, nope, not again unless I hear things have changed.

The centerpiece of the house's interior is a rotunda supported by four Corinthian columns and lit by a stained glass window located on the roof. Walking into the foyer you cant help but embrace the timeless grace, where every corner whispers of history and a bygone era. There is a quiet serenity to the space, as if time slows just a little bit inside. The modern touch added to the old renovated mansion does come with a bit of a sharp, sterile elegance of a modern mansion. The Parlor is a great place to enjoy a delicious craft cocktail and even better, ADULTS ONLY! There are also many other lovely seating arrangements throughout the property, including outdoors, and a few even come with fire pits. Regardless of your intentions for visiting the Heights House, I am quite confident there will be no disappointments, unless they have a private event. Cheers!

Everything is lovely and though it is all modern and sleek, it still feels fitting for the original era of the house. The cocktail area takes up most of the main floor, with a stand-up bar just off the entryway with a few tables and then a larger lounging area with sofas and chairs just beyond. The drinks are exceptionally good, and the spirits menu is creative. They also offer a few small plates. There is plenty of paved parking immediately next to the hotel for guests only, so that is not a hassle as it can be at some B&B/inn-type establishments. At check-in, you are offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine to set the tone. The rooms are comfortable, but I will say that the entry-level ones are quite small (which is apparent on the website), but for the rates charged there isn't even a place to sit and read a book other than the bed. There's one small, delicate wicker chair that would be for tying shoes or whatever, but not lounging. The bed is luxuriously dressed, and there is drawer space and a minifridge, but no closet -- hanging items can go on hooks by the door out in the open. The bathroom is spacious enough, with a broad sink and elegant tilework. The lighting fixtures throughout are nifty. I found the breakfast sort of average for this type of place. I came later on, so perhaps there is more earlier, but there were a few pastries, some hard-boiled eggs, and fruit when I arrived. There's also a fancy coffee-drink contraption, but those aren't my thing so I left that alone. It's a very easy walk across the Boylan Bridge and down a couple of blocks to the area of the Dillon with several restaurants, and the performing arts center is not far beyond that. Location-wise, there's plenty that's walkable but also more an easy drive away.

The breakfast at the Park Bar & Grill on site here was ok. Even though they have it buffet style, you can ask them to make you eggs or omelettes your way, so be advised, you don't have to eat the powered eggs they have on the buffet, you can get fresh eggs! The location in Cary was perfect for me. It was close to the city close to my work location in Cary, and was right next to a shopping center with everything you might need. Our room was a king with a sofa bed and it also had a mini fridge. It was quiet all night long. The location was great as we were in perfect proximity to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. It's a great central location. As gold members, we were granted $15 in credit each day for breakfast. For $10 a day, you can enjoy cereals, breads, and other dry foods. For the additional $5, you can eat eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. We were happy to get this credit as it saved us a lot on breakfast in the mornings. The only silly part was that it was about $3 extra for pancakes or waffles. I've been to hotels all across the world and that's always included in the continental price. Odd and something to be aware of if you have littles, but didn't really matter to us. The gym and indoor pool were nice for the level of hotel. I'd recommend!

It is off of Rt. 1 but I did not here traffic noise. Check-in was friendly and I was given my keys to the room and told where and when breakfast would be. The hotel has two elevators, a pool and a fitness room. The lobby was nice. When I got to my room, I pushed both switches and one lit up the microwave area and the other didn't seem to do anything. There were no overhead lights and it was dark. There was a small lamp on the desk and another lamp near the bed. From photos it seems my room was missing a lamp near the couch and likely another on the other side of the bed as there was a switch there that wasn't doing anything either. I could deal with the darkness for a night but it wouldn't work so well for a long term stay. I normally have a book with me so I wouldn't have had enough light for that. The bathroom was large and had plenty of light. I wish some of those overhead lights were in the room portion. WIFI was good. The tv didn't always connect so it was the static screen a lot. When it was turned on it would have the thinking circle and then a little bit later a station would show up or the static. It was just a night there so not so much an issue but I wouldn't want to deal with it for a long term stay. The HVAC unit worked well but was on the louder side. So I am not sure if that buffered out any traffic noise. I slept well and the mattress and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast had a room with waffle makers; eggs; sausage and potatoes. Then breads and oatmeal.

I utilized the FREE breakfast once and found it more than adequate with a lot of variety of both hot and cold. There was visible staff attending it and they kept the bar and dining room clean. I did interact with the staff quite a bit before departing due to a snow short that hit the area. They were nice enough to lend me items to clear my car. The lot unfortunately was not cleared, but few businesses were. I do plan on returning to this terrific property. 4.5, rounding up.
