This was built by local and military members years ago. It's unfortunate to see that parents aren't taking pride in this great park. It's for your kids. If you see trash, pick it up. If you see that the bathroom isn't working or isn't clean, reach out to the parks/rec department and let them know. They've had issues with young kids roaming around at night after sunset. So if you see something not right call the Sheriff. The park is visited by neighborhood families and families from surrounding areas. It should be treated as if it was your own back yard. Help keep it clean.

It is set way back along a somewhat secluded road called Jerry L Maygarden Road. It may seem like you're going onto private property, but you're not! The park is between the SkyWarrior Flight Training & Pensacola Aviation Center to the left and the Pensacola Air Flight School & the Pensacola Navy Flying Club to the right. There's a gate at the entrance of this park. It is free to the public. The park is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily. There are picnic tables of which one has shade. It rained a lot while I was visiting Pensacola in August. The park looks like a mini airport with runways, control tower, and airplanes! Although there is a mini Control Tower (observation tower) at this park, I could not get to the stairs without stepping into a very large pool of water! I really wanted to go up there, but I didn't want to get my shoes soaking wet! The main walkway is a mock runway. The smiling red, blue, and yellow airplane toys are off to the side. Too cute!!! This discovery park is also known as the General Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. Aviation Discovery Park. General "Chappie" was a Pensacola native who became the first African American four-star general to serve in the U.S. military. There are tribute plaques to him and other individuals important to aviation. I stayed here for about a half hour and watched the planes land & take off at the Pensacola Regional Airport. Hubby & I used to park near the Los Angeles Airport (LAX) way back in the day before the road was barricaded and closed to the public. We'd watch the planes take off! I miss that and it was nice to be able to do that here for a bit!

Come to find out Cory was from Chattanooga and I am from Huntsville, so small world when we Met in Pensacola. Enjoyed our visit. the park was clean a lot of toys only drawback is the water fountain for the dogs was very very slow coming out. There was a bowl there for the dogs that you could get water I did bring water and a bowl from my dog and of course I brought toys and bag for his waste. There is bags available for you to use there. somebody was in the small dog side cleaning up, overall the park was clean and was maintained. It looked in good repair. I did give it a five star I was impressed. There is chairs there is also benches and there is shade I did see bathrooms that was up closer to the front of the park so I did not see them by the dog park side so it was a bit of a walk, but there was benches by the trees, so you did have a shade that you could sit in while your fur baby played .

It really needs regular irrigation. The grass patches had a lot of high weeds in them. It's a large park with a very large covered pavilion & picnic tables for large gatherings. It has a great kids playground & several fields. If also has 2 fenced in dog areas for small & large dogs. There were a few people there hanging in their tinted window cars in the parking lot which was a bit of a bummer. I really liked it. I do wish they would maintain the grounds better. There are small and large pavilion areas for picnics or parties (no reservations) positioned along the edge of the park with accessible pathways making it easy for everyone to enjoy. There are two playground areas separated by age groups and walkways between the two. The area for younger children has a ton of shade. The larger playground has wonderful shady areas with benches for parents to relax. The park dock area leads to kayak launches and a nice area to access the water if you want to swim. There is plenty of parking spots and lots of trash receptacles (unlike the new Ferry Pass community center).

There are large oak trees for shade, a little grass and a lot of sand/dirt mix. Bring your own ball/frisbee/toy. Be respectful and pick up your dog's poop! It is evident a lot of pet owners at this dog park do NOT pick up their dog's poop even though there is a waste receptacle outside the gate - this is one of the reasons for only 3 stars
