This is a new two level gallery in a newly remodeled building. The building was Neuberger Hall,…read morehome to registration. Compared to many museums it is not large. But it has free admission going for it. There is an upper gallery off the main building entrance with its coffee bar. Internal stairs lead to a similarly sized lower gallery and a good size classroom-multipurpose room. On the lower level is a room easily curtained for video work which usually travels in multiples. The opening show is perfectly suited to PSU. It has established names in the contemporary art museum world along with artists from other countries and subcultures, all in dialog. A university is home to students exploring and debating identity, and PSU has a large international student population. They hosted a very active family day program with children drawing and crafting, which happened to coincide with a beautiful Fall farmer market. The elder Schnitzers collected at a time when there were more originals circulating, and they were also patrons of Portland artists. Since then, prices for originals have rocketed. Modern contemporary art pieces are routinely considered investment vehicles today, and many are locked in vaults in free ports. This is the project of son Jordan. His philosophy is to collect multiples, prints, where 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, etc. copies are made. It's slightly more democratic to viewers throughout the world, and they are more easily shared between museums mounting shows. There are several Jordan Schnitzer museums so far: at UO in Eugene, at Washington State in Pullman, and now in Portland. Visiting Portland, or living in Portland in search of an art break, this is a good one to consider for contemporary work. It's free!

Worksound is one of Portland's underground art venues with a good curatorial eye. They have bands…read moreand DJs at openings and a great creative crowd for conversation. And yes, they can close early and unpredictably and I haven't figured out how to see shows other than the openings. The chief curator is a local art prof from Senegal and artist. Sometimes top rank local curators pick the shows, usually involving 5-10 artists. It's a must stop for Portland art openings, usually the first or second Friday of the month, sometimes music events other times in the month. And yes, the bathroom is not so great, but if you think that is bad, look out the window at the building foundations! Low rent and cool art, just like we like it!

There were various pieces around the space (a fairly large space at that!), which showcase a broad mix o' media. I have to be honest, I'm feeling pretty Switzerland about the whole venue. I think the one thing that annoys me is the limited online information about the location. I think when any business dabbles in a little of everything, they become hard to define. In the case of an art gallery, that might be something you're really looking for but for this kid...it just makes me want to shake someone down and demand answers. I had a good time, heard some good music but I admit that I occasionally looked around frantically and wantd to yell "hey! just what the hell is happening here?!" Nooks of art, brightly colored seats carved out of the walls and windows--it's refreshing for an art gallery. A woman who is setting the world record for number of paper cranes made was working behind the counter. And the art was everything from small, contemporary sculptures to breathtaking music posters for monumental underground bands. It was, to say the least, one of the best gallery experiences I've had in a long time. Definitely check it out.

The Hoover-Minthorn House Museum was made out of the house that Herbert Hoover lived in for 3 years…read morein his youth - from 1885 to 1888. Hoover lived with the Minthorns after his parents passed away. Access to the museum was $3 / adult - cash only. There was plenty of street parking around the building. Hours are pretty limited, so make sure to check the website before you visit. I was really impressed with this museum. The curator gave us a tour, and she was very excited to share the history of the house. The details she provided really brought the visit to life, and made it a great experience rather than just a good one. She shared details such as how they've had people come in to inspect the appropriateness of the furniture and such for the time period, and they are pretty rigorous about only keeping things on display that would have been used at the time. They even had some original furniture that they highlighted in the tour. The house was in really good condition, and the displays were great. I learned a lot of things about our 31st president that I hadn't known previously; not only did they talk through his history as a child while he lived in the house, but they provided information on his entire life and put it all in a historical context. Overall, this museum is worth a visit, especially considering how inexpensive the entry fee is.
