I was amazed at what a great place this is and how much there is to see. Free parking is very easy. There was a lot of walking but they also have small trolleys that take people place to place and bleachers for watching demonstrations. Plenty of options for food, clean bathrooms. Admission varies depending on the events being held(and there is a variety!) Very easy access off I-5. I plan to visit again.

Takes about an hour…read more Five mid-1800's era buildings: the Newell house (the only building in its original location), a large log cabin, a schoolhouse, and a jail. Lots to see in the cabin and in the house. We particularly enjoyed the cabin, as it had many antique tools, and much antique kitchenware and furniture. We didn't see the inside of the jail. Nothing to see apparently, as it is just a wood blockhouse with a dirt floor, and only ever had one inmate. For one night. (His pig apparently escaped and did some damage to the neighbors' gardens). It would be helpful if there was a brochure with a map and description of the various collections. AAA discount available.

Newell Pioneer Village is a pleasant and welcoming historical park, just outside the entrance to…read moreChampoeg State Park, run by Daughters of the American Revolution. I visited two of the four buildings: 1) a spacious log cabin built as a tribute to the Pioneer Woman in 1931, later relocated up here to get out of harm's way from flooding. 2) the restored Newell House, built in 1852, on a hill above what was the town of Champoeg. When the town was destroyed in the flood of 1861, all 200 residents shared the house in the aftermath. The upstairs of the Newell House houses a display of actual evening gowns of Oregon's First Ladies from the beginning until 1992, quite interesting. Knowledgeable and friendly guides tailor the tours and stories to the visitor's interests. The grounds are pleasant and well-tended. All in all, a nice place to visit.

The Musuem is officially open as of July 2025, after being closed for renovations since 2009…read more Musuem is located at Camp Withycombe, an active facility for Oregon National Guard. You must present valid identification at the gate before proceeding to musuem. The displays show Oregon military history from it's settling in the 1800's through current times. It has an incredible vault displaying military weapons through history and an art exhibit created by veterans. There are many volunteers on site who are eager to answer questions and inform about the history of the exhibits. In the back, there is a library for research and archives of the military. The library is open by appointments only on Thursdays and Fridays. I found the 7051 nails being pounded on plank of Douglas Fir representng each of US Servicemen that were killed during Afghanistan and Iraq Wars quite sad. You see it physically in front of you and it's a memory of how many we lost during the wars. All things considered, it is an amazing experience with multiple trips needed to fully absorb everything on display or to see new items as some displays have new items rotated in. The Musuem is open from Wednesdays to Saturdays 10am to 4pm. Year round.

Every sculpture, path, and water feature is created with care. They build and design almost everything themselves, which gives the space a truly personal and handcrafted feel. We had the pleasure of meeting Linda, the artist's mother, who was incredibly warm and welcoming. Talking with her added a beautiful personal touch, you're not just walking through a sculpture garden; you're stepping into a family's living, breathing creative space. You can easily spend 30 minutes to an hour here, taking your time to explore, take photos, and just breathe. It's also very kid and family-friendly, with plenty of open space and interesting sights to keep little ones engaged. Bonus highlight for travelers: there's a heated restroom in the working/storage barn, complete with a toilet seat cover. You don't realize how much you appreciate a heating restroom until you step into one after a chilly drive down the coast. If you're ever passing through, don't miss it. Honestly, what a fun spontaneous find literally on the side of the road! As I was headed towards…read morethe coast, I happened to see a sign for a sculpture garden peeping not too far off the highway. I decided to take a little swerve off of the highway to turn into on the road less traveled. I went down a gravel road and parked on the side of a road behind a line of cars. What I didn't realize was that I had actually missed the parking lot for the Gardens, but it honestly didn't matter because it was a pretty quick walk there. Upon entering, we were greeted by a receptionist who explained the layout and basically let us free. The inside houses a mini gallery display of sorts. There are lots of interesting pieces that they make and sell. The cool part is definitely the gardens. After walking through the interior, an innocuous door leads you to the garden in the back. Although the interior space is small, the outdoors is actually quite large. There are lots of interesting trees, plants, and, as the name suggests, sculptures displayed all around. It was really fascinating to see how they chose to organize things throughout the garden. Because it was a weekday, we were the only people there. Not sure if they are typically super busy, but it was a fun place to come out and stretch our legs!

She wrote the wrong information without checking facts about Taliban coming into power in Afghanistan in "1984". I told her Taliban didn't exist then. They came more than a decade later. She looked at me in a very irate manner "Well I just wrote what she said (the woman who gave her info about Afghanistan). I told her well it's wrong, explaining about when Taliban came into power. The museum lady said "I'll research it" and walked away talking to others. I've never been felt unwelcomed and felt horrible vibes from somebody who supposedly cares about the museum or cares about facts. I'm Afghan, and I told her I was. She didn't care. She wasn't rude. She was just very stand offish and annoyed that I was even talking to her.

There were archery lessons, a blacksmith with a forge, several vendors with beautiful swords, and so much more! They had a booth with a game for kids to catch "rats" throughout the faire - I didn't catch the details, but the kids were clearly having a ton of fun with this. I arrived shortly before the gates opened and was happy to see plenty of parking, and plenty of staff on hand to direct vehicles (sounds like this is an improvement from last year).
