I ordered 6 plants from hirts garden and was charged 19.99 for shipping of the 6 plants. The order was mostly correct but was missing 1 plant and a different plant that I didnt want or need replaced it. That was an unwanted exception made without consultation. I was told that they would send me the correct plant but instead I received a refund for that plant. However, I was still charged an extra $8.50 for the shipping of that plant that they didnt refund or replace. When I recreated the same shipment with the exact same 5 plants that I received, shipping amounted to $11.49. Shiesty business practice for squeezing an extra $8.50 out of a customer. Ill never buy from them again, and would suggest you not. read more

My first orders from Hirt's Gardens were fine. But the most recent arrived in a box that had been smashed open. It was obvious that someone had just shoved the plants back inside and thrown the packing on top. I contacted the company and sent photos, but they were dismissive of my concerns, and refused to provide a USPS receipt so that I could file a claim. I bought 3 plants with a heat pack and the packaging was horrible. They added those puffy plastic inflatable bags, but they basically threw the plants in the box without any cushioning or protection around the leaves. Several leaves were broken. Also, when I got to the last plant, it was lying directly on a heat pack and they cut the heat packs out of the wrapping for some reason. I messaged the seller and they basically said "sorry, but they're still alive so..." The plants may have been alive, but I didn't spend my money to get damaged, distressed plants. After my friend insisted I reach out again, they gave me a partial refund, but I wouldn't shop here again. I wish I had looked at the reviews before placing my order. My order never arrived. The tracking number just stopped. It's shown as "out for delivery" for 4 days now. Hirt's has told I need to continue waiting "a few more days" until July 5. I'm sure it'll arrive in good condition after being "out for delivery" for a couple of weeks- if it arrives, at all. The customer service is atrocious. I asked a question about watering because my plants died so quickly (we have untreated well water) and didn't receive a response. When I followed up I received the following response: "google it." Well clearly I did google it and didn't see an issue with it, hence why I asked for clarification. I don't think I've ever received an email from a company that lacks in such intelligence and tact. This place is the worst. They sell stuff online (through Walmart amongst other places. Avoid their stuff. I have ordered a lot of plants online - rare, exotic, cactus, ferns - you name it! I can say with all honesty that I have NEVER been so disappointed with an order and the customer service associated with it (if you can even call it that). Everything was bad - The plants that showed up, how they were packaged and the customer service from Hirts and Walmart. Ordered almost $80 worth of plants. Seriously maybe 2 can be salvaged. I am highly impressed with them and am very happy I decided to ignore the negative reviews I saw. I needed to replace my Norfolk Island Pine, since the one I had died after many years of beautifying my home. They are not easy to find this time of year, and the few I found were way too expensive. Then I found one at the right size and a shockingly low price with an even more shockingly low shipping price at Hirt's Gardens. I recently ordered two plants from hirts garden. A peperomia prostrata (string of turtles) and a ceropegia linearis woodii (string of DAGGERS). The string of daggers is a close cousin of the string of hearts plant which I'm familiar with as I have 3 large plants of the HEARTS variety and one DAGGER variety that I have been growing for a while now (not from Alan Hirts but from actual honest sellers). For starters, these plants are EXPENSIVE for tiny 2" pots. So my expectations are that they are gonna be good investments. Fast forward to receiving the goods. Instead of what I ordered (string of TURTLES & string of DAGGERS), this guy sends me 2 string of HEARTS. After several back and forth emails with photos, he finally Sends a partial refund for string of turtles but only because he says "What a joke.............String of Daggers is the same genus and species as String of Hearts." Alan you are a joke and a scam artist at best. Don't buy from this guy. There are a lot of sellers who are honest and customer service oriented and will work with you. I've been buying plants online for a couple of years now and have had good luck with many online sellers including Etsy shops. I've never had quite an experience as I've had with Alan hirts. You should google his shop reviews too, they are eye opening...wish I had seen sooner before my purchase as mis-shipments of plants are a regular occurrence. If you do decide to take a chance with Alan hirts, don't buy direct from his website. Take your risk through his Etsy or eBay shop because if you do (and you will) run into a problem with this guy, you can dispute it at least without dealing with his shadiness directly. I live in the Cleveland area, & this is by far one of my favorite garden centers to shop at! I go shopping there in person & it's the most magical place!! So many plants all in one place- mostly tiny plants, but the variety is unreal. I have a personal collection of 180+ plants, & I still managed to find several plants I've never seen in person at hirts garden center. Customer service is subpar in person too, but there is one employee, Kevin I think, that is super awesome & helpful & answered any/all of my questions. One of my better experiences online nursery shopping. Support your local players! I guess Hirt's is local to someone. Well it seems the reviews for this nursery widely very but my experience with them has been excellent. To start off with shipping was 1/4 of the cost of this place's Neighbor. I really don't have a lot of experience shopping for plants online but for obvious reasons if I want to finish my project in the front yard I will be shopping online. (To help keep this review in context, it is being provided at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic that makes shopping for these things in person "problematic"). The plants I received were packed so well I'm not sure I could've driven them home from the local nursery in such good shape. I will provide a picture that shows the plants condition just 10 minutes from removing them from the Fed ex box. I didn't expect much out of a 2 1/2 inch pot being shipped to me. Based off the reviews of this place there was a 9 out of 10 chance I was gonna get some really jacked up plants in the mail but I risked it anyway. And you know what? They're freaking amazing. The packaging was perfect and the soil was protected with easy to remove tape. No soil out of place until I dropped one. Haha. But I checked the base of the plant and peeped the roots a bit and looked at all the leaves and gently washed them to remove water spots and I didn't find any bugs or anything dying like all these reviews say. I'm really happy with this purchase especially since I saved so much money in comparison to other places. I'm a plant mom novice so the one critique I have is they could have added some directions on how to take care of these babies but I'll figure it out online. QUICK UPDATE!!! So I'm plant thirsty now and I can't stop buying them. I just ordered three more tiny starter plants and just like my first order they came in excellent packaging. No wonky leaves. I received the two Chinese Money plants and was excited to open them. Both little plants were brown and wilted with only a portion of the stem still green. I am very disappointed!! This time I felt they did not acre about plants and their shipping dept is teally doing a bad job of picking plants to ship which makes me sad because I really want this company to stay. I recently ordered from Hirt's seeing people were posting on fb about their orders. They are also having a sale so why not. ‍ I ordered a total of 4 items, 2 dwarf mulberry plants, a heart philodendron and an oxalis. Shipping was quick. Ordered night, next day was shipped and arrived within 2 days. I give them a 4 star because my mulberry plants came yellow leafed and didn't look too healthy IMO. Customer service said that they were in dormancy. I just have to wait to see if it'll grow nicely during spring. The other two plants came with minimal damage and looked very healthy. Customer service was very quick at answering my questions and find concerns. Overall, I think I'll be ordering from them again in the future. The prices are very reasonable and shipping is quick. Will give updates and change star rating depending on the outcome of the mulberry plants. read more

Brazilian rain tree arrived smashed to hell. The plant was longer than the box so they just stuffed it in there. Then some mouth breathing mental giant wrapped the plant in bubble wrap and taped so tight the plant was flattened to about 2 inches. I take it out and figuring I'll give it a few days to get itself right and I see all these green gnats on it. It's literally covered in green gnats. 5 days later and the plant has dead and dying leaves all over it from being smashed. This was to be a test order before we ordered bigger more expensive plants, they have lost our business. Do yourself a favor and Google Hirts Gardens reviews and look at all the websites where people have complained. I should have searched myself before buying. read more

I've had a pretty good experience with Hirts so far until my last two orders where I did not receive the plants I ordered. With the previous order, they just refunded the cost of the plant and shipping. There was no response to my email or any information about how I could get the plant I actually wanted. With the last order they responded to my email with one sentence saying that the grower said I got the right plant, why would they say it was wrong? I responded saying I disagreed and why and thanked them for looking into it I did not expect to hear back from them and they did not disappoint there. From the images it's clear that there is are differences between the website image and what I actually received, leaf shape and pattern are off. The plant I received is attractive, but it is half the price of the one I expected, so I feel cheated. Based on these last two orders I think I'm taking a break from shopping here. I'm not going to take chances and wait to be surprised by what I get. I'm giving 3 stars because my previous orders were ok, but the poor communication and messed up orders don't warrant more stars than that. read more

I wanted to grow chocolate habaneros and Hirt's Gardens was one of three online sources. I bit the bullet and paid $42 for 4 plants that included shipping. The plants arrived infected with early blight and infested with aphids. My money was refunded when I brought this to their attention but the customer service communication sucked. After trimming the plants back to near nothing as they suggested, I nursed them and grew them anyway. They grew slow but eventually flowered and had peppers. The peppers were red and not chocolate as ordered and as promised. I can get red ones locally for less than a dollar a plant. These guys are shysters and should be avoided. Somehow I failed to notice my bookmark from last year about receiving sickly plants from Hirt's. Made the mistake of ordering online from them again. The four tomato plants that were just delivered all have diseased-looking leaves--yellow and curled-up brown leaves. I would never have purchased these in a store. In fact, I wouldn't have taken them if they were giving them away, since I don't have the time or resources to identify whether they are carrying something contagious to my other plants. Absolutely sub-par to other growers I've ordered from online. Edit: downloaded some photos--don't know about you, fellow gardeners, but if I was shopping in person, these are not plants I'd add to my cart. And, had they been pictured as such online, I certainly would not have willingly paid an additional $19.99 in exorbitantly overpriced shipping charges to receive them. Final Edit: After calling, writing and submitting photos, I did receive a partial refund. Then, while boxing up debris, I happened to look at the label on the tomato plants. In one last demonstration of carelessness, they weren't even the variety I'd ordered. I checked my email to be sure--I paid for a tomato called Fourth of July. I would select a 0. They are a seller for Walmart. I have a terrible time with them. They send me a dead plant and claimed that the plant was dormant. No way to revive that plant. Walmart was very good and refunded my purchase. But their seller was very hard to deal with. Took me 25 emails to get refunded. I wish I could send a picture of the plant.
