From the owner: Why Choose Asheville Stonesmith LLC?…read more What sets us apart ... Matthew Smith, Stonemason in Asheville. Our attention to detail both seen and unseen. Sure you want your stone project to look great, but more so you want your investment in stone to be lasting. Our stone walls are well hearted/self-supported and stand alone, not relying on soil (which settles) or gravel (which travels) to hold them up. This is what makes them "traditional" stone walls, because through the ages this is the style that endures. Using these tried and true techniques our walls can last for centuries. When they eventually need to be re built, you can use all the materials to build another structure. What is a "greener" building method than that? We hand pick 90% of the stone used on your project. Every project is different. By customizing our selection for you, we get the right rocks for your project and minimize the amount of waste created while leaving you with a more finished product. This also benefits the planet by reducing the need for hauling away this heavy material. Although we are capable machine operators and stone splitting technicians, we strive to use less power tools on your job site. There is something meditative about the rhythmic ringing of a hammer and chisel shaping a stone. By consistently leaving the saws at home we are less intrusive, dusty and noisy which creates a more peaceful/natural environment both audibly and visually...

Approximately 1 year ago I contracted R&L Paving to re-pave a private driveway for my rental home…read morein East Asheville. Since I do not live locally, I had several phone conversations with the owner named Pamela, in which I reiterated that the entire driveway was to be repaved; which included the flat parking area as well as the narrow intersection perpendicular to the edge of the street where the private driveway begins. In addition, I asked her to meet at the home with my Property Manager to look at the slope and drainage as well as address the existing site conditions. One day I receive a call from Pamela that they had a cancellation and asked if they could do the job the next day. For this, she sent me a basic contract stating the square yards of Asphalt as well as the thickness of the new asphalt lay-over. For this, they wanted $5,800 for one day's work. I signed it presuming that Pamela and her crew would not only re-pave the entire driveway, but also engineer the new asphalt so that it drained properly away from the house. This was verbally discussed, but was not included in the Contract. After completion, I asked my Property Managers to go to the Site to ensure that they Completed the work in a satisfactory manner prior to releasing payment. I received a photograph showing that R&L Paving only did approximately 70% of the driveway (the flat part), but did not do the sloped narrow portion of the driveway that intersected the street. I called Pamela to ask her why they did not do what was asked, and she started getting aggressive with me on the phone saying that they did what was on the Contract. Further more, she stated that the total amount of $5,800 was due in full now that the job was complete. She then went on to threaten me that if I did not submit payment immediately she would put a tractor in front of my driveway preventing anyone from going in or out until she got paid in full. Since my new Tenant was moving in the next several days, I immediately paid her company in full to avoid immediate complications. Months later after my Tenant moved in, they contacted my Property Management Company notifying them that when it rains there are large puddles that form in the flat area where they park their vehicles. During my visit to Asheville, I went to the Property to look at the issues with the puddling and have photos that show the extent of the problem. By then it had been less than a year, and the area where the potholes once were...now the asphalt was also showing evidence of starting to break up. It was immediately thereafter, that I wrote R&L Paving a Certified Letters notifying Pamela of the above issues with the driveway. Since I never received a reply in the time manner set forth, I ended up filing a formal complaint with the local BBB. You can go to https://www.bbb.org/asheville/ to read the entire complaint. Her website also falsely advertised that they were an Accredited business by the BBB (Not True!). Now I not only have a liability issue, but also have to hire and pay another company to address the puddling issues created by the new asphalt driveway. In sum, I sincerely believe that Pamela Dockery, the Owner of R&L Paving, does not care one bit either about customer satisfaction nor about taking the necessary steps to ensure that the asphalt paving work is done correctly. Instead, she is solely concerned about getting in and out of a job as quickly as possible and getting paid right away..and NOTHING MORE. Pamela's demeanor in making threats, denying conversations, and then pointing the finger back at me for not telling her company how to do the paving job right...ARE ALL REASONS TO to warn and protect other consumers from BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES by this company.

Pamela called us back within 1 day and set up an appointment for the following week. The quote for our very steep driveway was incredibly reasonable and we were thrilled! The appointment was set up for a month out because they were very busy. The day before, Pamela and her partner came out to go over what we wanted again and make some measurements. Originally, she said it might take 2 days but she expected the work to be done in one. The next day her crew showed up early. They worked about a 13 hr day and got the whole thing done! I came home around 5pm and they were still working. It was very hot outside but they diligently worked until the very end of the project, smoothing out rough spot and cleaning up the gravel around the driveway. Pamela and her crew were so pleasant and informative. My driveway used to be so steep my little car couldn't drive up it. Now I have no problems and we have room for 6 cars at the top. Even though the driveway price was reasonable, they clearly did not sacrifice the quality of paving. One other we appreciated, was their consideration of the trees on our property. We made it very clear we didn't want to harm any of the beautiful large trees in our yard. Pamela discussed with us how the driveway would effect the trees and how we could limit damage to them. The driveway was finished 3 months ago and it still looks lovely. I really can't recommend this company highly enough
