The Hippie Gypsy is the perfect place for deadheads, college kids, and more looking for tie dyed clothing, flags for your wall extolling peace, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead, and coexisting, and a crapload of incense, bongs, and other related items. The place reminded me of a place in Chicago called The Alley, but without all the leather Chicago police jackets and skulls. The staff was super friendly and helpful and emerged from behind the counters to come help you find anything specific you might be looking for. My son was interested in a turtle flag but they only had it in a large size and his apartment bedroom at his college didn't have enough wall space to accommodate the size they had. He did walk away with a Pink Floyd shirt and my wife found a woven hat she and I wore in college in the 90s. Our son was quite embarrassed and that was enough to make me love this store. I am definitely not a hippie. Not now. Never was. However, they did have some things that I was able to reminisce about from my college days that I would have picked up knickknack or two just for that. So excited to see a Hippie Gypsy! The first one I ever shopped at was the one on Mill Avenue in Tempe/ASU, back in the 20th century. I love all the eclectic clothing, bumper stickers, incense, glass pipes, tapestries, unusual ideas for gifts, and so much more . Apparently, Tucson's 4th Avenue store is the ONLY Hippie Gypsy store left! The one in Tempe closed. The one off Speedway closed. And the one in New Orleans closed as well. Protect this one at all costs! The lead dude working there was super knowledgeable & gave me all this background info b/c I was a Curious George, of course. Anyway, this location has it ALL. I really dug these pants that were like patchwork pants but I didn't have time to try them on. I made a tiny purchase with the idea that I'll be down there soon again & hope to snatch up a pair of those fun pants. Highly recommend Hippie Gypsy! read more

Cool mural painting outside the building and very hippie clothing store/smoke bongs shop/gift shop. That day was Monday around 4:30pm during the spring break so the shop was very quite and very few people walking on the street. I was trying a dress in the fitting room and one of the staff came to me and told me that I had to ask first before I tried it on. Well, I already had the dress on me-should I take it off and ask then put it back to try? I ended up bought the dress anyway, so be cool girl, no panic. Went looking around downtown and saw this store, thought I would check it out! Overall the layout and everything was nice and organized. However I bought a couple nicotine pens from them in their smoke shop area, and they did NOT offer you to test the product! Came home to try out the pens and THEY DONT WORK! Spent almost 50 dollars and they won't even grant you the courtesy to exchange them for ones that DO work! I will never come back in here again, very disappointed and appalled at the way my business was handled. Will not be recommending this store to others. It's a shame too because I love buying their incense but cannot and will not go back after that last experience. read more

This is your go-to 4th Ave source for tapestries, incense, hippie-style clothing, stickers, patches, posters, and smoking accessories. Plusses include a huge inventory, friendly staff, great music, and a generally cool vibe. Minuses: can be a bit pricey, shop feels crowded with stuff, and if you so much as walk past the door, you will smell like patchouli forever. Maybe not that long. But the shop definitely gives you the whole hippie package. Including the smell. From the clothing side I have only purchased a hat, but that was 6 1/2 years ago and I'm still wearing the hat. It's a pretty good hat and I get a lot of compliments on it. The smoke shop section of the store is toward the back, and hundreds of pipes are displayed in large glass cases, ranging from very plain and inexpensive to ridiculously complicated and beautiful blown glass creations that I find it hard to imagine people buying because wouldn't your one friend accidentally just knock it off the table causing it to shatter into a jillion pieces? For the most part, we've purchased stuff like slides for water pipes (old habits die hard) and other pieces for existing paraphernalia, although I've also gotten some glass pipes here. Some of them I broke myself, and others, my friends broke for me. There's a lot of "needful things" in here, so either come with lots of money you're prepared to give them, or no money at all so you're not tempted. read more

So went to the strret fair on Sunday with my cousin Richard got a vaporizer, new battery for cartridges, and a RAW roller. I asked the guy if it was the 1 1/4 size he said yes. I also asked for the black battery that I bought. Well get home find out he gave me a grey battery instead of the black one (havent noticed its the wrong size for the roller yet). Called them on Monday and the guy I spoke to said sorry about that but that I would have to come in Monday to exchange it. Well I get there and the girl understood after I explained the story and no black batteries I was pissed because I dodnt want any other color so she dug into the bottom of the shelves and finally one black one left hmmmm. So my roller finally broke and the one I bought Sunday i gave to my cousin as a gift. So had to go back to the Hippsie Gypsy to buy a new one. Well i hate driving back and forth so i asked the same new guy for the 1 1/4 size RAW roller he went to go get and asked him for 2. I boight them and went home. I opened the roller to find out it was the wrong size, so i went today to see if they can give me the correct ones since the guy clearly didn't give me the right product. The guy that I asked stated I couldn't get a refund or exchange because store policy states that they can't take any tobacco products back. I told him even after you guys gave me the wrong size and you told me it wasn't I even brought my old roller in to show him. He said I didn't even know they sold them in different sizes. Really!! So I'm out of the money for 3 rollers because I bought one as a gift and he asked if I wanted to buy another roller. Hell no. I told him I will never come here and my cousin was even upset so sad they lost two customers but thanks to the Moon Shop they have RAW rollers the right size ones and I will be giving my business to them instead of this ridiculous shop.. Don't waste tour time with the Hippsie Gypsy goto the Moon Shop instead you'll get better customer service and when they make a mistake they'll correct it. read more

It's kind of a That 70's Show meets Hair kinda place. Full of....uh.....water pipes. @__@ in various shapes and sizes, and incense, and clothes with tye dyed themes. Some really funny bumper stickers, and buttons. My son was in town, and we took him. He's the one who explained a lot of what I was looking at to me. LOL The parking isn't really handy, we had to walk a couple blocks, and it's downtown, so it's hit and miss as far as people around the area. Never had a problem, just some skeevy looks. We have always been during the day though. My partner and I have gone three or four times, and it's always as a sidenote from one off our other favorite stores. Her asthma usually kicks in from the smokiness, but I don't think we would make a special trip, even if it didn't. It's a store thats cool if you need something from there, or to tool around, not a destination, for us. read more

As someone who has been to a lot of really great hippie shops in california and sedona that provided a great vibe and customer service Hippie gypsie falls miserably short. The clothing items they sell are mediocre at best, and often overpriced. Which sometimes just happens with people running small businesses, i get that. What really turns me off about this shop is the terrible staff behind the counter in the smoke shop portion. I have seen some great glass pipes here, it certainly isn't the selection that suffers here. I was here with a friend trying to pick a valentines pipe for her boyfriend and when we inquired about seeing something on the bottom shelf the guy said "We don't take anything out of the case, what you see is what you get" and when we asked how much it would cost he said that all of those pipes were "upwards of $100" and walked away like he had something better to do. Even though it was the pipe she wanted and were willing to pay for it, needless to say they didn't have our business that day and I doubt they ever will. read more

I'm a glassblower who was visiting from New York and checking out all the local shops who sell glassware in tucson and this store, the hippy gypsy, was just unbelievable. I'm from NYC so I'm used to rude and obnoxious people but the staff who work here take the cake. For anyone visiting Tucson I recommend NOT Going into this store. It's charming coming in here. I like this place. It's laid back. my love of the Doors and John Lennon are at peace here. Great smells of incense and tons of it for sale. Really neat shirts and clothing and everything a hippie or New Ager needs. And what a great selection of bon--err I mean tobacco pipes! Oh yes. This is the place to get your tobacco smoking needs. There is just massive amounts of little tobacco pipes and big ones and ones you can all smoke on with your friends. Discreet ones and glass and totally homemade looking ones. It's always a pleasure coming here, even if it's just to browse for unique stuff. I mainly shop here for incense, and occasionally to see what kind of cool accessories they have, and so far the customer service has been pretty good too. The entire back room is filled with bongs, and other smoking paraphernalia. I personally don't partake, but it's still fun to see what they have, and I'm sure those who do will find something unique worth buying. I'm glad a store like this exists in Tucson. read more

Cool enough place, nice people, the blonde guy working the front of the store was a nice dude. They have one of these stores in Tempe at ASU as well, it's pretty much the same in both locations. Conventional stoner stuff, grateful dead merch, jimmy hendrix, pipes and bongs. Honestly, the hippie thing is pretty boring after 50 years. My problem is the price of merchandise, it's ridiculous. I saw some cool tees, but not cool enough to cost 33 dollars! Seriously man, $33 bucks for a hippy tee shirt is ridiculous. It wasn't even handmade or artisanal, just screen printed. Everything is overpriced. Seeing as how everyone in that 4th area is either homeless, a student, or a broke hippy the prices don't match. Meh. Points for nice people. read more

Some of the merchandise in here is overpriced. There are pipes here that cost a lot but some are complete works of art and in my opinion totally worth it. I got a pipe that a previous Disney artist made and it literally was as gorgeous as Cinderella's glass slipper. The girl helping me was a student, and she was reserved, but once I started talking to her more she opened up and became totally friendly (don't judge a book by it's cover). They sell lower priced merchandise if you ask them. I was looking for a cheapy grinder and they did carry them. She showed me the lowest priced ones they offered and the higher priced ones. She did not once try to upsell anything to me, she simply gave me options. They sell clothing here and it is overpriced. If you don't like the hippy/stoner vibe from this store then look elsewhere, because this place is filled with it. This is the worst smoke shop i've ever been to. Theres so many better places to go in Tucson than this shitty smelling, tacky store. I bought one item, and it broke less than an hour later. I asked the store for a refund or to replace my item because I had just spent money on it, but they said no and basically just took my money and didn't offer anything in return. Seriously avoid this store if you can, it's a dumb tourist trap and theres much better glass places on fourth street to go to. These people also know nothing about what they're selling and have no idea how customer service works. read more

The service here is horrible. Customer service is non-existent. Yes, I am aware that a part of the store is a smoke shop, I don't care, they should still give decent customer service. I bought a hookah here and found that the bowl was broken when I got home. This was clearly the stores fault, however, I wasn't mad because I understand all stores make mistakes sometimes. Besides, the guy said I could exchange it. So I drive my butt all the way over there only to get yelled at by one of the employees..."You cant bring tobacco products back into our store, you have to get that out of here" as I'm trying to explain my situation. I listen to him, place my hookah outside of the store where it can easily be stolen, and step back into the store. I try to keep myself calm after that first encounter, but he just keeps repeating the store policy about final sales on tobacco products! Obviously, I understand their policy, but I feel that sometimes stores NEED to make exceptions if it was their fault. I also called in before hand and asked it if was okay! I purchased the bowl already broken...all I wanted was my money's worth instead I got two uneducated douche bags who just simply refused to help me. definitely never going back again...and I'm discouraging all my friends in going here as well I'm happy now :) read more

I bought an awesome hookah from Turkey and when I brought it home it was missing a few parts. I took it to Hippie Gypsy and was thrown out by Josh the manager with no explanation other than "you could have been smoking illegal substances out of it and if the cops come in here I will lose my license." Fine, but this was after telling him it had never been used on account of the missing parts. It didn't even have a bowl or a hose. I ended up taking it elsewhere on 4th and everyone was perfectly helpful and I got all the parts for it. I then called back to ask Josh if he could explain to me the reason why he couldn't help me when every single other shop I took it to didn't even bat an eye. He told me he was not allowed to answer my questions over the phone and then proceeded to yell/whine at me which is unprofessional and rude. Bottom line, this place sucks and it has for a while. read more

Never used my tobacco product, I took it in; in hopes of store exchange, as I love this place. I was kicked out of the store - they told me they couldn't even talk to me in the store - I had to leave. I was told that once purchased tobacco products are not allowed back in the store. Everywhere else, if there are no return policies - it states so on the receipt - big signs when you walk in the door -- Hippy Gypsy has none of these. I will never shop here agin and I will tell my friends not to shop here. read more
