Came in from a driving tour of the giants causeway. Everyone was very hungry. Ordered a fish & chips supper and a side of fish. Not sure what we got but it was a lot of fish, and an abundance of fries. We've been in Scotland and Ireland for about 8 days or so, and have eaten fish and chips about 6 times. This had to be our least favorite. Batter / crust too thick, flavor of coating was that if a deep fryer seeming to need a refresh of oil. The service was decent, however all of our entrees were delivered to another table who ordered well after us, with one of the people hand delivering our food across the aisle to us. TWICE! Minimal tartar sauce provided, after asking for it... could've gotten more I suspect, but wonder who would've received it (humor intended). Place was empty when we arrived very quiet, either a lingering grease smoke in the room. Way too warm inside, with little to no ventilation. Stuffy is a good description. Last note.... The two orders rang up at over $38 / £29. Too expensive for a small town joint, with not the best flavor. IMO. I took no photos, not worth it. read more

Good, fast, fresh, cheap. Great place to get a Fish Supper and to get a lot for not too much. It's an entire filet-and-a-half upon a pile of chips, all made to order. Do eat carefully - you'll inevitably find a few bones. There wasn't much else open on a Saturday night, strangely, but either way, this isn't a bad choice. read more

I must admit I was disappointed. There is very little fish and mostly batter. It was extremely greasy. You order at the counter and the staff was not helpful. The tartar sauce is just a commercial packet. read more

After a little tour and whiskey tasting at Bushmills Distillery, we walked through the town around 3pm looking for our first taste of real Fish and Chips. We were sad to see so many vacant buildings and like many of the other tourists, actually went up to several pub doors just to walk away realizing it'd gone out of business some time ago. We walked past a few "take-away" only places and at first dismissed it, but then upon not finding any other options, settled on The Hip Chip. We ordered two Cod and one Chip. Everything was cooked to order right in front of us and took about 15 minutes. The service was very friendly. When we received our fish we suddenly realized we got quite an amazing deal for our money; each of us got about 1lb of fish in addition to a good helping of chips. The fish was enormous and very good. The batter was flaky and seasoned well, much more than the standard salted seasoning. The fish tasted very fresh and wasn't overpowered by the batter, although it did start feeling a bit heavy after about 1/3 of the fish, but that's also because it was extremely filling. Note: all my recent vacation in Ireland Yelp reviews will have the same 1st paragraph preamble, for just the review itself skip to the 2nd paragraph. On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed. We came to Bushmills, the town, for Bushmills, the whiskey. After touring all things Bushmills, the whiskey, the girlfriend & I were hungry. So, we went to the center of the tiny town of Bushmills & looked around for something to eat. We quickly came across the Hip Chip & decided to give it a go. The Hip Chip is a small fish & chips takeaway shop. The girlfriend & I ordered Cod Supper, Scampi, a Scotch Egg & a Pastie. Service was welcoming & prompt, but the food did take a while. It turned out to be well worth the wait. Sitting down by the river Bush, we dug into our food. The Cod Supper was a huge serving & came with a giant pile of chips. Add in the Scampi, Scotch Egg & Pastie & it was all deep-fried decadent indulgence. The Cod Supper was actually the best fish & chips I'd had on our vacation in Ireland. After whiskey earlier & a fried food feast from the Hip Chip, our tummies were plenty happy though our arteries probably not so much. I think I've died and gone to fish heaven. This place serves fish and chips on its own level - well, the fish anyway. So I'm going to review this like every tourist wants it reviewed - as a compare and contrast with the very obvious competitor across the street flash in the pan. And of course like the good yelper I aspire to be, I had to try both. If I could have create my own ideal meal, I would chose: - cod fish from Flash in the Pan - batter and frying from Hip Chip - chips from Flash in the Pan - tarter sauce from Hip Chip - indoor seating go to Flash in the Pan Also, if you want pizza for whatever reason you should go to Hip Chip which has that as a unique offering on the menu for whatever reason. Both also serve burgers and chicken goujon which is basically fried chicken fingers served with a dipping sauce. Hip Chip also has a fish sandwich unique to them. To be completely honest, I could care less about wedge fries which is the traditional chips in this dish. I prefer the thinly sliced McDonald's fries, on the super crunchy side if possible. So if I had to chose, I'm a big fan of the fish in fish and chips. And even though in an ideal world I would have opted for the thicker juicier fish from Flash in the Pan, the fish from Hip Chip is still certainly one of the best I've had. So for that reason, if given a third fish and chips meal, I'd go back to Hip Chip. They also seemed to specialize more in Fish and Chips based on the very small sample of customers coming and going while we ordered our food. The batter at Hip Chip was better because it was more robust, had more structure and crunch standing up to both time passed and also any vinegar or tarter sauce you might want to put on top. In contrast, flash in the pan's batter got soggy immediately after vinegar was added even if you literally hurried to put it in your mouth. The only thing slightly inconvenient with the Hip Chip batter is that it was more likely to separate from the fish if you broke pieces off the fish to eat with your hands. Of course if you just bit into it, you wouldn't have this problem. And it's not difficult to put both fish and fallen beautifully crunchy batter in your mouth separate for an all in one bite even with a little separation in going from plate to mouth. This mainly happened as I was trying to dip sauce onto the piece of fish. The tarter sauce at Flash in the Pan came out of a premade packet. Hip chip had home made tarter sauce with a whole lot of flavor, a bit of vinegar taste and very creamy base of probably mayo. Way yummier by far and for me, this pushed Hip Chip over the edge. With both restaurants, you really can't go wrong but in the end, I fall firmly on the side of Hip Chip if I had to do it all over again due to more and better flavor of the fish part of the fish & chips meal. And to be fair, it's not like their chips was bad at all. I'm just not as much a picky chips kinda gal. Enjoy!! read more

We regularly stay up at the north coast and always used to go to Flash in the Pan across the road from Hip Chip. A couple of years ago we decided to give Hip Chip a go for a change and we have always gone there since. We grabbed a couple of burgers, chicken goujons and chips on Friday evening. The burgers and goujons were great but some of the chips were a bit underdone for my liking which is why I havent given a 5* review. Im hoping this was just a one off though as they were very busy when we were in. read more

No, I'm not pulling any punches here, the burnt fish and greasy hard chips at well over £6 were pretty lousy. I wouldn't go back here for a free meal. We had ordered six take out meals and took them back to our B&B and no one was impressed. It had taken near 30 minutes to serve the food. My cod had a hole in the batter - a big no no - and the thin piece of cod was burnt at this part. I have uploaded a photo showing the significant burnt part. No self respecting chippy would sell a battered fish with a hole in the batter as the fish is burnt. This poor quality and 'do you rightly attitude' really bugs me as it's just as easy to do it right. Someone is making a fortune with fish cut this thin, and the customer is being taken for a ride. The queues waiting for food were impressively long so the good food signals were misleading. The town has two Chinese takeaways but both are closed on a Monday so there was little takeaway food choice about and maybe that's why the demand was there. We had intended to get a Chinese. There is another fish and chip place right across the road so if I return I'll try one meal from it. We had a sit down meal a few days earlier at the Scotch House and it was superb food, similar prices yet a whole world of quality away from this grim rubbish. read more

We conducted a head to head comparison of battered cod between Flash in Pan and Hip Chip across the street for lunch after visit to Bushmill Distillery before heading to the Giant's Causeway. FiP offered thicker/juicier cut of fish while Hip Chip offers a crunchier and more flavorful batter. Four of us sampled both and no one really greatly favor one over the other. It's a quick and simple meal, you cannot go wrong with either. read more
