I was a patient of this practice for decades, dating back to the 1990s, originally under Dr. Hines and Dr. Cushing. I received excellent care for many years, including very successful laser treatment, and this office was widely trusted by professional athletes and long-term Denver patients alike. After both doctors retired and the practice was sold, I returned in July after moving back to Denver for an annual exam with a new doctor. While the clinical exam itself was fine, the administrative experience was not. After paying in full for my exam, I requested my eyeglass prescription so I could obtain reading glasses and was refused due to unexplained billing and insurance issues. I was then told I would need to schedule and pay for another appointment instead. Under federal rules, eyeglass prescriptions must be released after an exam regardless of insurance status. The inability to explain charges while withholding my own prescription felt administratively hostile and unnecessarily obstructive. Unfortunately, this is not the practice it once was. I brought my parents to their appointment, and unfortunately the experience with the front desk staff was incredibly disappointing. The behavior alone almost ruined the entire visit. Specifically, Maria at the front desk was overheard speaking negatively about another patient who had just walked in for his appointment. She told her coworker that the man was "annoying" and that he was "always coming in just to bother them." After hearing this, the coworker immediately began treating the patient poorly without even asking why he was there or whether he had an appointment. She dismissed him and told him he would have to come back later, only to find out that he did in fact have a scheduled appointment. Watching a patient be judged and treated disrespectfully before staff even understood the situation was very concerning. My wife and I used Dr. Coco for the past three years. I found a staff always cheerful and willing to help. I had cataract surgery done by another Doctor Who botched my eye surgery and placed the wrong lens in it. I also had high eye pressure .The starting glaucoma. Dr. Coco removed the wrong lens and did a wonderful job in placing the correct lenses in both eyes and also installing stents to relieve the high eyes pressure. I've never been happier with my vision. My daughter was treated by Dr. Coco for her vision problem and she is now extremely happy too. I have been a patient for 30 years, but in the past few years this practice has spiraled and I just want my (3" thick) medical file back so I can go elsewhere. The staff has been pleasant, and I was encouraged by the new doctor, Dr. Lau, but during my last eye exam I got a new prescription, and Dr. Lau said they'd call in an order for trial lenses. Three weeks later I hadn't received the lenses, or a call; when I called them I found out they never placed the order. I made several calls to make sure they actually placed the order, and after another three weeks, still no trial lenses. Seven weeks after my appointment they finally called to say they received the trial lenses, and I asked them to mail them to me. "We'll charge you $12 to mail them." I said I'd waited seven weeks for trial lenses, couldn't they just mail them for free? "No. $12.00." So I went to pick them up. Their phone message, website, and office signs all say they're open until 5 p.m., but when I arrived before 3:30 pm the office was closed. Another hour of my time wasted. I tried to call back the next day, and their phones didn't work - just a rapid busy signal. I wrote a lengthy email and their office manager finally agreed to just mail the lenses. But two weeks ago when I tried to reorder the trial lenses, they approved the wrong prescription, and I had to go through another round of "ordering roulette." Last week I called to ask for a medical release form so I can take my file to another practice, and I am sooo shocked that they didn't send me an email with the medical release form. I was a loyal patient for thirty years, a frustrated one for the last three or four, and I just can't put up with this incompetence. Go elsewhere. read more

In the mid1990s, my family including myself, husband, three sons, mother-in-law, sister and niece all went to Hines Sight when Dr. Hines and his professional associates worked there. We used Dr. Hines and his team for everything from routine eye exams to cataract surgery, LASIK, dry eye syndrome, and Dr. Hines also performed surgery on the muscles in my then 9-yr old son's eyes with complete success. He and his team including office staff were consistently positive, professional, attentive, caring and had the appropriate extremely high level of expertise to consistently provide the wide variety of eye care services my family needed. Dr. Hines was incredibly amazing in his work, and I literally mean everything he did for us. He was so kind, considerate, thoughtful and caring and never once left anyone in my family behind in meeting our needs. So he's retired now and I am left to deal with Dr. Coco and his abhorrent attitude towards me as well as equally abhorrent attitudes from almost his entire staff I've been dealing with for 1.5 years for cataract surgery as well as Dr. Coco's diagnosis of glaucoma in both of my eyes. He said I had to have this certain glaucoma surgery at the same time as my cataract surgery, at which point he placed some kind of stints in my eyes to relieve the glaucoma pressure and he said I would no longer need glaucoma eye drops every night following the surgery. What a joke and absolutely incorrect statement. The glaucoma pressure increased in my left eye from 11 using the drops nightly to 17 following his botched surgery!! My right eye pressure didn't improve so here I am a year later still using the glaucoma drops nightly. His failure with his supposedly remarkable glaucoma surgery DID NOT IMPROVE MY EYES!! Now it's time for my six-month exam and I have chosen to seek care elsewhere. I have called his office five times requesting a referral from Dr. Coco to a different Ophthalmologist. He has not provided me with any information to date! Are you kidding me?? Dr. Hines would NEVER EVER have treated a single patient of his with such contempt, disrespect and disregard. I find it very, very sad that the clinic is still called Hines Sight because honestly Dr. Coco and his pathetic surgery scheduler who repeatedly lied to me and didn't give me the pre-surgery calendar which she committed to mail me as I was out of state burying my dear aunt and when I returned with the surgery scheduled for I believe five days later, I had no calendar/schedule to tell me when and which eye drops to use pre-surgery, therefore, my surgery had to be postponed again. Furthermore, he and his incredibly unprofessional staff have destroyed the outstanding reputation Dr. Hines and his entire staff worked so hard to create and successfully maintain over the many years Dr. Hines was practicing medicine there. Dr. Coco brings shame and darkness upon Hines Sight. It's a dangerous place indeed. So sad it's gone straight to hell in a hand basket as they say. Bottom line, do your research and find another doctor who will treat you with respect and compassion and expect nothing less than that from their doctor associates to the entire office staff. We as patients pay their salaries, our healthcare covers the outrageous prices they bill for their inadequate healthcare services, and we deserve better treatment than anything pathetic and sad Dr. Coco and his staff provide. I've sat in the waiting room for extended periods of time watching and listening to how other patients are treated. IT'S NOT ONLY ME. CAUTION IS NECESSARY AT HINES SIGHT BECAUSE DR. I hate leave bad reviews because it's not who I am as a person, but I do want to share my frustration and hopefully help people stray away from going here for an eye exam. In the beginning all was well but as soon as something goes wrong expect no help from anyone there. I went just for an normal eye exam and check up to get a new perception for my contacts. I was told I had to dilate my eyes which I understand but I normally have a sensitivity to it and let them know, the technician was very sweet about it but also rushed me into being ready for the pressure test after the dilation and I needed more time. But I felt really stressed so I leaned it and that was the biggest mistake I could've made. That lead to my cornea being scratched and almost instantly had pain and knew something was wrong. My eye watered uncontrollably and I couldn't see at all. Dr.Koetting came into the room and I was sobbing uncontrollably at this point because the pain and asked for help. She put numbing drops in which had helped and took a look. She had informed me of the injury that had happened but at the time I didn't think it would be as bad as it turned out to be. We finished the exam very rushed and not couldn't even do a proper exam at that point due to me not being able to see. They sent me on my way and out of the door ASAP. After calling my mom who is a registered RN she was shocked at the actions they did not take and took me I needed to go somewhere else to see if I was okay, I live about 12 minutes away so I decided to just go home instead because my head had hurt pretty bad. As soon as I got home not even 30 minutes later my eye was in the most pain I've ever felt, I could not see at all at this point and my eye was pulsing and super swollen. Since I couldn't see at all at this point my roommate had called them and said it was an emergency, so they told us to come back ASAP based on what I was saying on the phone, so she drove me and we went. As soon as I walked in at that point I was a mess in pain and just full of tears because I was so scared I would never see out of my right eye again. We walked in and instantly were questioned and the lady at the front desk originally wasn't told I was coming back so she didn't understand why I was there, so I was forced to stay in the front room looking like a disaster while she walked back to talk with everyone, finally they pulled me into the room and I started getting question by another technician at this point and he was SO rude to me, he was trying to look at the eye and questioning what happened what THEY ARE THE ONES WHO CAUSED MY INJURY. Finally he left and we sat and wait for the doctor who saw TWO other patients while I was just sobbing in the chair in pain. Finally she came. They ordered me antibiotics, pain medicine, and two different types of eye drops. ALL BECAUSE I WENT FOR A BASIC EXAM. Trust me I know freak accidents happen, and I'm sure the technician felt so bad for this injury, but my issues and why I'm rating them so low is because how I was treated after, how they made me feel and how unhelpful they really were. I could not see out of my right eye for over 12 days, it was the most pain I've ever felt and took almost a month to full gain my vision back. At the end of the day I still needed my contacts and I didn't want to give them business but I didn't know where else to go since Im new to Colorado so I was just going to have them order though my insurance so that I could come and pick it up, but they must see me again to do that, and there is no way I would ever allow them to look at my eyes again especially with the pressure gun. So that's my experience and horror incident that happened, and again I would never have rated them this bad if I felt I was treated fairly but I was treated like a huge inconvenience for something that was done to me by them. My experiences at Hines Sight left me more frustrated and upset than any other business ever has. Hines Sight administration repeatedly demonstrated deceitful business practices and behaviors during my time trying to resolve issues that arose regarding my care. My problems with Hines Sight boil down to this. I accepted treatment from them after I was told that my insurance was accepted at their practice. During 2 visits, I had an eye injury checked out, paid my co-pays, and left thinking everything was all set. A few weeks later, to my confusion, I received a bill for treatments, even though at this point, this should have all been covered by insurance. Also, at no point during my visits was I ever talked to about any issues regarding my health insurance, or payments. No calls, no emails, nothing. Just a statement out of the blue. Thinking it might have been a simple mistake, I called the practice. Very quickly, I realized that things were not going to be simple. The secretary answering the phone pulls my bill up and proceeds to tell me: "Oh no, yeah, there were those two girls we had for a little bit who were telling people we took that insurance.... there's nothing there gonna be able to do...". At this point, I'm becoming pretty confused. I ask to be connected to the billing office, and once connected, I have a conversation where I am told that I was notified during my second visit that my insurance wasn't accepted there, and since I still accepted treatment, I owed for it. Let me make one thing very clear here. I was NEVER talked to, notified, or informed in any manner regarding this issue. Why would someone who's on Medicaid: A. accept this and still proceed with the treatments (which by the way, why wouldn't they call or email or let me know before I showed up if this was the case?) B. somehow then leave the facility without paying? This is where serious concerns regarding Hines Sites' integrity begin to rise. At this point, they are flat out lying to cover themselves, and quite frankly, as someone struggling to pay my bills as it is, I know that I essentially have no power here. I flat out dispute this claim, which leads to the next saga of dealing with Hines Site, wherein they promise to call me back and never do. I reach back out to them when I don't hear back after a while, and this time am connected to the business or office manager and have one of the most unpleasant interactions with a "professional" of my life. After repeating my side of the story and asking for them to help resolve this bill, the manager then proceeds to change the story, to how he, the billing manager, were both present during my second appointment, where they pulled me aside and talked to me regarding the situation. At this point, I cannot believe what I am hearing. I have never interacted with this man, or anyone else at this practice outside of the doctors ( who I had good experiences with to be fair) , and the front desk staff. We essentially argue about it for a little, at which point we end the conversation with him, saying he will speak with Dr. Coco about it and get back to me. Big surprise, I never heard back. By avoiding my calls to resolve the issue, the bill was forwarded to their collections department, at which point I start getting concerning letters. At the end of the day, I paid the bill because I was tired of trying to get in touch with individuals who were more focused on covering their mistakes, than helping out customers. I feel like, at any other practice, where a mistake like this happened, the issue would have been handled with much more concern and attention paid to the customer. I am a good customer, and I'm always happy to pay for services if I know what I'm signing up for. At Hines Site, they made a mistake and made me pay for it. They were willing to flat out makeup lies regarding the situation. I'm not someone who can afford to take this any further, and they know it, so I guess I can at least share my story so that someone else can maybe avoid an absolutely horrendous and miserable experience with them. read more

I am 6 months pregnant and as a nurse especially am usually very good about doing my due diligence and research. I did not expect to be dilated and the tech Melissa clearly did not look in my chart or at my 6 month pregnant stomach and pushed me into being dilated via mydriatic solution which I then learned is pregnancy cattegory C, to be used only if absolutely necessary. The FDA clearly states it is the duty of the provider to explain this to the patient, which they did not, and when confronted she was extremely defensive and handled it very inappropriately. Dr. Cushing was apologetic but it was too late. This was poor patient care and poor practice, and very disappointing. Edited to add my OB reinforced how unnecessary this was and was surprised they would do this if they paid any attention to the fact that I was pregnant... she said hopefully the staff learns from this and starts doing what they should be doing. read more

Got my lasik here, had to come back for an enhancement because the first time didn't totally correct my vision. Had to deal with dry eyes for half a year but as promised, that went away (thank God!) The second surgery and subsequent exams are all covered which was nice. But they don't always tell me what my readings are especially (I can feel it) if the numbers are getting worse. Other than that, pretty nice staff. I only saw Dr. Hines when he operates on me, post-op exams are all seen by Dr. Cushing. Would be nice if the same Dr. can follow through with the entire procedure. read more

I got Lasik from Dr. Hines in August of 1998 and have been going back to this practice yearly (or every other year) since for checkups. I found Dr. Hines to be very honest and open about the risk and rewards of the Lasik procedure. My results were very good and I've never needed a repeat, but he made the point of telling me "you had the best outcome possible" - which was a very straightforward honest evaluation considering the possible risks of Lasik. I see Dr. Cushing for yearly or bi-yearly checkups and have found him friendly and skilled, as well as the many techs in the office. As far as the one reviewer who was told "they were not a good candidate for Lasik" consider that you were done a huge favor by this information. The worst outcomes in Lasik are usually those people who should not have had the proceedure in the first place. read more

Don't got to these jokers. I had ICL lenses placed intraocularly about 6 years ago. The first 3 years were great, Dr. Hines was excellent. Then my vision started changing, so I went back to be reassessed and met their new ophthalmologist, Dr. Coco. He was concerned about my eye pressures and set up a whole bunch of expensive, new technology testing, much of which I had to pay for out of pocket. Then he gave me a glasses prescription to hold me over for a year until we could re-test; but while my eyes were set to monocular (one distance vision, one reading) the glasses Rx turned both eyes to distance, meaning I need to take off my glasses all the time to read or do close-up work. Which meant while doing mechanical work on vehicles I broke my glasses a bunch of times setting them down temporarily then accidentally stepping on them, or having something fall on them, etc. Not good planning. Finally, I just called to make a follow-up appointment so we could determine if I need another round of testing, per Dr. Coco's instructions, and the idiot at the front desk couldn't seem to understand why I was calling or what I even wanted to make a follow-up appointment for--when their owner specifically instructed me to call for a follow-up appointment in a year. So no appointment was made, no follow-up will be done, and those expensive tests I paid out of pocket for? Useless. They will happily take your money, but they since Dr. Hines retired and sold the practice, the quality has plummeted. read more

Hines Sight is a scam. This business has a full proof coverup but in fact is nothing but a money grabbing hyena- don't be fooled by their kind and gentle front like I was. And the cost of nearly $2500 and my eyesight , they scammed me into a surgery which allows only 3 months to tweak when in fact, could take you longer than 6 months to recognize the need. My experience with Hines Sight ended in disappointment. I attended an extensive pre-LASIK screening with Dr. Cushing and was informed I was a great candidate for LASIK. I had done prior research into the different LASIK procedures and gathered questions to ask Dr. Cushing and Dr. Hines during the pre-screening. Unfortunately, I was unable to meet with Dr. Hines because I was told he generally does not meet with LASIK patients outside of the surgery unless it is requested by the patient. During the pre-screening, I began going through the questions with Dr. Cushing and he informed me that he did not have time to go through each one of them at that time. We agreed to allow he and Dr. Hines to send me the answers through email sometime in the next few days. This was reasonable since I had a significant number of questions for him regarding the LASIK process. (I wanted to be sure I understood the process and the risks involved to be able to make an informed decision about my eyes). Time went by and I never heard back so I called the LASIK coordinator to check the status and she informed me that Dr. Hines did not plan to provide answers to all of my questions because he was too busy, but she would send me the partially completed answers. One week later and I still had not received anything, so I called again. This time the LASIK coordinator informed me that they would not be sending me answers and that Dr. Hines decided that I was not a good candidate for LASIK. I was surprised at this response because I was being told that I was not a good candidate for LASIK because I was asking questions about the procedure itself, the risks involved, and the success rates that the doctor had experienced. This was a disappointment because prior to Dr. Hines refusing to provide answers to my questions, I had all but decided to allow Hines Sight to perform my LASIK surgery due to my good experience with the staff and thoroughness experienced during the pre-screening. However, because Dr. Hines would not answer my questions, the staff became unresponsive, and I was told I was no longer a good candidate for LASIK without ever even having the chance to speak with Dr. Hines, I am choosing to take my business to a different LASIK surgeon in Denver who is willing to spend more time with his patients. I do not generally write reviews, but in this case I felt I should share my experience to inform those individuals, like me, who would like to be well informed of the LASIK process and have easy access to the actual surgeon for questions, that Hines Sight may not be the best choice. Dr. Hines' success rates are good (just like any good LASIK surgeon) and I'm sure I was referred to him by another eye surgeon for a reason; however, the Hines Sight office seems to lean towards catering to a higher volume of patients which limits the surgeon's availability to the patient. Overall, I'm disappointed with my experience with Hines Sight and felt the situation could have been handled in a much more professional manner. read more

I had surgery done with Dr Hines in 2009 and I should have left my review before, and today I came to the Hines Sight website and I decided to give my feedback. Dr Hines was the best ophthalmologist I have ever had for my eye's complicated situation. Dr Hines was very honest about the difficulty of my case. I had seen other Doctors in Massachusetts and in Brazil and by that time I was listening that the risk of the surgery was much greater than the benefit. I moved to CO and was referred to Dr Hines and he explained the pros and cons and he was confident that he had the knowledge and skills to try to resolve my problem. The surgery was a great success and I was able to have a normal life ever since. As of today, after 12 years my vision is a dream that came true after so many years struggling with double vision and using a very strong prism in my prescription. Dr Hines made a big difference in my life. I would go back to Dr Hines without any doubt. Although he retired from private practice, I am glad to know that he is teaching at the university and passing on to young Doctors his exceptional experience and ethical way to treat patients, and his legacy will linger on for new generations. I flew out to Colorado to do LASIK with Dr. Coco - he was very thorough and explained what would make me eligible for the procedure and what the actual procedure would be like. Process wasn't painful at all and he talked me through the entire procedure so there were no surprises. He even offered to look up doctors during my post op that were closer to home to do my checkups so I wouldn't have to fly out to Denver for my other appointments! I had an appointment with Dr, Coco yesterday and was completely floored by his lack of professionalism and respect. This was my second visit as a glaucoma patient with the doctor. After being served by one of the techs I was left sitting in the exam room to wait for the doctor and when he finally came in , he had his cell phone in this hand and was talking with his service company, mouthing the words " my phone got wet" (his mask was down) and ignoring me to continued this conversation. When he finally was through I started to question him about my eye drops which had been denied by the insurance company, won't go into this throughly, but then he said "Don't you know that your insurance company doesn't care about you or your health, just money. " When I expressed my concern that he didn't seem to be familiar with the records I had provided from my last doctor, he scowled and said that he wasn't even sure I had glaucoma in my right eye that it could be something more serious behind the nerve. When I asked him what that meant he just kind-of blew it off without answering. The entire visit I found him very combative and rude. This will be my last visit to Hines Sight. By the way, I don't think he even washed his hands after playing with his phone Prior to touching my eyes. read more

Well, i can say they are very thorough! My exam lasted over 2 hours, and only about 15 mins of that time was spent waiting (for the optomap machine to warm up). However, i have to take a star off because you only spend about 10 mins with the doctor -- most of the rest of the exam is spent with the office clinician. (She's very nice and seems to know her stuff, but in my 35 years of wearing contact lenses and going to several optometrists over the decades, i've never heard of so much of the exam being performed by someone other than the optometrist.) And i had to take another star off because they don't stock a wide range of contact lens prescriptions for patients to test out (i find i have to go back and forth between a couple of different distance and reading prescription combos before i settle on the one that works the best). They told me they just don't have the space to stock samples for all prescriptions ... but their offices are 17 times bigger than my last eye doctor, and he managed to always have several lenses for me to test out after the exam. (A box of lenses is tiny, honest!) At Hines, i had to wait 5 days for my sample lenses to come in, then i'll have to wait 5 more if i want to sample a different prescription, then i'll have to wait 5 more after i place my order for a years' worth of lenses. That's a lot of my time wasted ... read more
