My husband and I visit places with our RV. We then get to know the area we are visiting by trying their restaurants. In mid-July, I was intent on having Asian food for dinner. While walking around downtown Durango, we happened on Himalayan Kitchen. I was hesitant to try it but did anyway. I never had Nepalese food and was pleasantly surprised. I asked our server for a recommendation and he suggested the traditional Nepalese Daal Bhaat Masu which included everything -- lentil soup (daal) and basmati rice (bhaat) and was the centerpiece of this dish, then fresh naan, achaar (chutney), cucumber salad served with vegetable curry and lamb curry. One word -- DELICIOUS!!! My husband is a very picky eater but eats anything grilled. He ordered their mixed grill platter which had chicken breast chunks, drumstick and thigh, lamb and shrimp. All the meats were tandoor roasted. Our server cautioned him that it may be too spicy, but my husband loved it. He fell in love with their naan and MY chutney. We loved their food so much that we returned the next day and ate at their lunch buffet. Everything on the buffet was very good. I don't expect much in the way of Indian food in southwest Colorado (is that racist?) but I can not resist the lure, and this was surprisingly good. I wanted to do my standard lamb vindaloo but I managed to branch out a little bit and went with lamb biryani instead. Very flavorful, good tender lamb, and a nice (if not a little thin) raita served along with it. I ordered a cheese naan (because I'm a fatty) and was a little disappointed that it almost seemed like it was stuffed with a sort of gooey cheddar cheese - I swear it was dyed yellow - rather than crumbled paneer as I was hoping (and as I'm used to). So next time, I'd just do "normal" naan, this wasn't really all that great, just too doughy and gooey because of the cheese. Wish I had time to go back again, as there was plenty of other stuff on the large but mostly standard menu to try. I will say that this place, like my favorite in Seattle, Annapurna, has some himalayan items on the menu, like momo dumplings. If I'd been here with someone else, I would totally have momoed. I'm always sketched out by 4-5 stars ratings of restaurants in smaller towns because it seems too good to be true that every restaurant is that high of quality, and this place definitely fit the mold. The restaurant itself is pretty drab looking and non-romantically dimly lit. Service is lackluster and the food is bland too. We ordered the yak "hand pulled" noodle stew, which was really just slop-colored stew with a few large parallelogram-shaped noodles. Tikka Masala was good, as good as you will get in a major city. Saag paneer mediocre--I normally love this dish, but I'd forgo it here. Yaksha Thenthuk was just ok for me, but, to be fair, my hubby enjoyed it. If you wonder what yak tastes like, think lamb. Garlic naan was not good (I think it had garlic powder on it?), but the regular naan was ok. Overall, a good choice if you are sick of bar food while visiting Durango. Also, for same price had a much better meal here than we did at Mamma Silvia's Italian Kitchen! We had a family dinner here the last night we were in Durango. I ordered the chicken korma, mild- it was good- however for 16.99 you get very little portions. My husband who loves spicy food- he often orders the hottest at Indian restaurants ordered a 2 on their scale of 1 to 5. He couldn't eat it! That's how spicy their 2 is! My daughter also had a 2 on her vindaloo- she couldn't eat it either. All together we spent 80 dollars- and two of us couldn't eat our meals. If your level 2 is that hot- I'm not sure how anyone handles the spice here. Naan and chai tea were great as well as the service. read more

This patio is immaculate. Servers are attentive and and skilled in carrying 6 plates at once like a Mount Everest (Chomolungma in the local language of the Tibetans) of curry. The mango lassi makes me want to melt into a mango puddle. Rice and naan for everyone which is a must at any eastern restaurant. The prayer flags align my chakras and banished a dark spirit that had latched onto my colon. The creamy chai warmed my belly with its creamy heat. I have been there once before and unfortunately the second time I had the worst meal I ever had in my life. We order biryani and tikka masala and saag banner. Non of them taste like it supposed to be and that can be clear from the color of the food and they way it looks. Seems like a fast procedure to get the food ready whatever they way it looks or taste. I love the food here. Nepalese food, think marsala and curry and vindaloo. Not spicy hot, but full of spices that remind you for India only slightly unique. The lunch buffet is a great choice for anyone who has never had this kind of food before because you get to try a variety. I love the freah made naan (flat bread) with the chicken tikka masala, or the lamb vindaloo which was a little more spicy then other things I have tried there. I have also very much enjoyed the lamb saag, and the sherpa stew. The restaurant has that Tibetan feel and is always clean and smells amazing. They have small and large tables so a big party is easily accommodated here. This is also a good place for vegetarians and vegans. They have a large number of dishes that can just be ordered with tofu rather then meat, as well at dishes just for our plant eating friends and family. The menu was had a variety of dishes with brief descriptions at reasonable prices. I had the Sherpa chicken which was packed with a plethora flavors and spices. My date had the Pujuri chicken. The most disappointing meal we've had in a long time. The Saag was thin, like a soup, and didn't taste of spinach. There were just five small cubes of paneer in the whole dish. The yak stew, which is supposed to be a special, was terrible. Mostly a flavorless brown gravy, lacking in the complex spices you expect from the cuisine. Also hardly any chunks. The yak was inedible - literally too tough to chew. I had to spit it out. The garlic naan had no garlic on it. To top it off, all dishes came out cold. I'm a big fan of Indian food but have never tried Nepalese cuisine, and this place serves both beautifully. Now I consider myself quite the fan! Some dishes that I personally thought were very well done were the cheese naan (think Indian-style quesadilla), Himalayan Chow-chow (sweet and tangy stir-fried noodle dish I loved more than I thought I would), kheer, and the best lamb vindaloo I've had (it was more on the vinegary, spicy side which I loved). Our servers let us wait for a bit with waters before taking our orders, as they were quite busy. Although after we ordered they were nice and attentive. Wow, seriously? Remarkably nuanced textures and flavors in the middle of rural Southwest Colorado. Was SO delighted to find this place on Yelp and it is well deserved of five stars. Indeed the lower reviews are for folks complaining about price and clearly don't appreciate the distinction between chef-driven South Asian cuisine and standard fare "Chinese" restaurants found on most blocks in US downtowns. I had the Sankhuwa Machha, which was a phenomenally spice salmon in a sauce of green chili, cilantro, tomato and onion. Even the $5.99 cucumber salad was bursting with flavor and bright lime juice. Finished the meal off with their rice pudding (Kheer) - not to sweet. This should be on the MUST stop list for anyone looking for a great meal in Durango. read more

Employees always have a smile on their faces and they will get you sat and fed as quick as possible If you've never had this type of cuisine,it can be a little intimidating at first. Don't be shy, order some naan bread, some saag paneer and the the tiki masala or korma. Everything is served with fresh basmati rice and nice portions. Great place for larger groups or even a 2 person date. Best thing to do is order a bunch of stuff and eat it family style. Take whatever left to go and it reheats just fine. They do serve Yak which is basically the Nepalese version of beef. It's a bit chewy so unless you're familiar I would steer clear of the yak. Drinks are fair price and they make a great margarita as well as other specialty cocktails. This place doesn't try to be too fancy as most places in durango have a tendency to do and with that comes elevated prices and snotty service. While road tripping through southwestern Colorado, one would expect establishments that serve local fare. Wild deer, Rocky Mountain oysters, etc. Although Durango is the biggest town within a 200+ mile radius, a Himalayan restaurant is the last thing I expected to stumble upon, but me and my bros are so happy we did. Having spent most of my life in the Bay Area, I know what good Himalayan food tastes like. Berkeley itself has 3 Himalayan restaurants, which I used to frequent quite often when I went to school there. Considering how isolated Himalayan Kitchen is, the food they whip out is too legit and anyone who disagrees just has ignorant taste buds. To start off, get the Himalayan Spiced Wine. It's very similar to German gluhwein, Nordic glogg, or Russian glintwein. Just imagine red wine heated up with cloves, cinnamon and other sweet spices. It's the perfect way to warm up during those cold Durango winters. Since their website is not currently in sync with the actual menu, I can't quite remember the names of the dishes we got. However, Yak Momo is A MUST. Yak meat is kind of like a mix of lamb and beef. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the way they prepare it is filled with flavor and aroma, wrapped up in a delicious hand crafted dumpling. The sauce goes together perfectly as well. All the other dishes are delectable. Mushroom peas are creamy and rich in flavor. All the stews, curries, noodle dishes, etc are just out of this world. I promise you won't be disappointed with anything you try. Overall, it may be a bit pricey but running such a delicious and rare operation in a small Colorado town isn't cheap. The service is great, decor is beautiful, and the food is probably the best in Durango. I believe they're doing a great service to the community and all passing tourists by showing them there's other food in this world outside of burgers, burritos, and pasta. read more
