We wanted to experience some local Indian food, we went here for weekday lunch. The ambiance was plain, hardly any decorations. They do have a small food market. They offered us the buffet, and One of us got the buffet and one of us got the goat curry dish ($17.99). On the buffet I went straight for the butter chicken (very well known Indian dish). The chicken was not properly cooked, it was rubbery. There was rice, naan bread, fruit and desserts. On the other hand, the goat curry came with rice only (NO NAAN??), so we asked for naan bread, we were informed that only the buffet had naan bread, the $18 goat dish did not. We questioned it because all Indian restaurants I been to serve naan bread with all Indian dishes. We were informed that the goat curry came with RICE or NAAN BREAD, not both. How can this be? This is like serving Mexican food without tortillas, or Italian without bread sticks. This is crazy. read more

Service when eating in is great TOGO on the other hand there was PLASTIC melted into my food on multiple occasions and I finally had enough and took photos. Also the manager did nothing to try to make it right instead I'm seeing that they have deleted my review with proof of plastic melted into my food. Also on multiple occasion they would serve the lentil soup in a styrofoam container so hot that it would melt the styrofoam... just spare yourself and find a better less shady restaurant... read more

We were driving from Jackson to Dallas and ended up picking Himalayan Cafe for lunch since we had a couple of people who are vegetarians. Indian restaurant in a smaller city - should confess that we really had very low expectations. The location is closer to the University, probably for a reason - to attract students and visitors to the University - it is a few minutes deviation from I-20 but was eventually worth it. I went in first to check on the place and was ushered by the server, she asked me to take any seat that I wished to. Instead, enquired about dishes that can be served since that was a big consideration for us since we wanted to reach Dallas before it got really late. Got the family in and we didn't take long to decide what we wanted - ended up ordering Butter Chicken, Shrimp curry and Dal Tadka. You either get rice or Nan with it, we took a combination of the two and topped it with a Garlic Nan. The food was really nice - we all loved it. Butter Chicken had succulent pieces of chicken in a nice, thick gravy. Shrimp curry had a distinct flavor, probably more closer to the Himalayan taste. The Dal was very nice as well. While we were there, only 4 tables were occupied (around 2:30 PM on Sunday) and they just had 1 server which is fair. She seemed a bit unsure and low on confidence but then there was an innocent air about her which compensated for the lack of energy. One thing I would encourage her to get acquainted with is the menu. We asked for fish options and she was scrambling - straight answer would have been, "We don't serve fish, we have shrimps in seafood". We figure that out on our own!! The place was pretty big, they seemed to be having live performances too. Basic seating but the dining area is clean. The server preferred to receive gratuity in cash which we obliged - wonder why this is so. Bottom line - we will make this our stop over for road trips in this segment, the food really was very good & the service was pretty decent too. read more

We are a pair of vegans, so we like to find vegan food when we travel. We were on our way to Texas, so stopped for the night at a nearby hotel. We were happy to find the Himalayan Café open on Labor day and ready to serve us. It was near the freeway and 2 miles from our hotel. The employees were helpful in finding the vegan dishes for us and we had a good assortment of things to choose. All the food was delicious and came with sides of rice and an assortment of sauces. The prices were reasonable, and the the atmosphere was pleasant with Indian dance music on the video screen. We will stop here again in the future. read more

Himalayan Cafe is our favorite restaurant in Monroe. We have eaten at many Indian restaurants throughout America, and at two Nepalese restaurants near Cleveland. Himalayan Cafe tops them all! To show you that we thought about it, a South Indian restaurant, Udipi Cafe near Pittsburgh, came in second based on their yummy idli fries. We were impressed right away. The staff, Nishma and Anisha, were super friendly and helpful. The layout and the decor of the restaurant are comfortable and thoughtful. The eating area and the restrooms are very clean. The food was absolutely top notch. We had: Naan; Vegetable Steam Momo (DELICIOUS dumplings with a tasty tomato sauce); Vegetable Biryani; and, Paneer Tikka Masala. If you are visiting in the area, it would be worth your time to visit Himalayan Cafe. Our normal place we go to eat Indian food was closed and yelp recommended this place. When we walked in, its not what you would expect. It's definitely a hole in the wall but it needs more life. The food though was FANTASTIC, which is why we went. My whole family cleaned their plates. My husband ordered the Lamb Curry (I didn't get a picture) it was super delicious too. I almost didn't try this place simply because when I walked in, I was not greeted at all & the two ladies (worked there) were just looking at me as if I were lost lol.. One lady finally asked if I was dining in and how many.. the other lady just continued to stare. The chili momo was recommended and delicious. I ran out of water while eating, no refill. I had to ask the waitress that was sitting on the couch playing on her phone. Overall, service wasn't good but the food was nice for my first time trying Himalayan food. read more

We stopped in for lunch almost by accident because our first choice had a long wait. Boy are we happy that happened! We didn't have much time so we were grateful the service was prompt. We ordered the Kothey Momo for an appetizer because we were so hungry. They were amazing! I've never had this type dumpling before, but they could easily become a habit. We ordered from the lunch menu, which was allowed on Sunday, shrimp curry and chicken curry. Both were delicious, spicy but not too spicy! The trays the food is served on are much larger than they appear in photos, portions are plentiful. Everything served with the curry was amazing. We can't wait to return one evening when we have more time to study the menu and try more new dishes. This place will be one we frequent for sure! read more

I ordered takeout for myself and my daughter. We found the food overpriced and very sweet. The pakora and naan were also burned.

Well, the food is good, but, I couldn't get a glass of iced tea, because the lady couldn't understand me, so I had to drink horrific monroe water that tastes like mildew, I was the only person in there, and it was 45 minutes before my entree came out. I have ordered more than once from here, through DoorDash. I have 4 people in my family so I ordered 4 meals with 4 sides of rice. We only got 2 of those meals with 2 sides of rice. I contacted DoorDash and they were only willing to refund me for 1 meal and nothing else. This is NOT the first time this restaurant has shorted me on food items and I don't know if they do this on purpose to keep the extra money since DoorDash won't refund customers or if they are just inept and don't know how to fill food orders for customers using food delivery apps. There are better restaurants out there than this one to buy food from and not have to worry about missing items from your order. A lot of these food items are way overpriced also for the amount you get, you really don't get a lot of food for what they charge you. If this restaurant didn't have missing food items, I'd give a much higher rating but this has happened a few times, so there's NO excuse for it to keep happening. read more

Great food, hit or miss service. I love the food here and it's next to impossible to order something bad. But have fun trying to flag down a server for anything after your order has been taken. Some people always seem lost/untrained, while others seem the excel at the job. I wouldn't say it's bad enough to scare you away from coming here but it's definitely worth pointing out. read more
