Fun event among car enthusiasts. Well organized and the cars are exceptional. We'll be back next year.

I was able to park about 3 blocks away, and since it was Sunday, didn't have to worry about staying too long. There's something for everyone here: 3 simultaneous music stages, beer, wine, margaritas, a mysteriously blue dry ice drink, barbeque chicken, links, fried donuts, all kinds of cuisine really, a Farmer's market, even a children's section with half a dozen different rides. Not to mention, a myriad of art booths up and down Burlingame Ave selling everything from new age jewelry and gemstones, to balsamic vinegars and mustards, to oil paintings and hand-glazed tiles to hammocks, wood-carved name tags and teak furniture, to crafted hand lotions and wine fudge. Even a Dunk-a-Cop! Although, I don't think anyone really hates the cops around here... only kids were throwing the balls, and there seemed to be a general mood of sympathy whenever a cop got dunked. The salsa band was hot, and the swing band really got everyone swinging! The latter was fronted by a cute blonde on guitar and one kool kat on keys... I'll have to look them up - their set was pretty tight. Also, for the dog lovers out there, I've also never seen a wider assortment of cute little toy dogs. Just be sure to bring enough cash, you'll be hard-pressed to find any food cheaper than $5, and most entrees are around $10.

It was deceptively large, and yet only contained - at most - couple handfuls of true 'art' tents. The rest of the blocks were made up of extremely aggressive sales people for vegetables, cruises, newspapers, and other misc junk. Warm, badly mixed Jamba was being upsold at the large size price for medium sizes drinks, and while they had incredibly helpful people at the information booth, the music on the fifth ave stage was really really bad. The teenager on the base was quite a good player, until she opened her mouth and you caught on she was tone deaf. I sat a block away and finally had to put on headphones. The second stage near first ave was much better, with a vocalist who worked the crowd - it really was a pleasure to listen and she was the saving grace of this event for me. All in all, there really isn't much reason to come to this unless you live nearby - the vendor selection was the worst I've ever seen, so if you stay home, you probably won't be missing much.

Today was a beautiful sunny day to attend the 22nd annual Festa Italiana di San Mateo (aka. Festa…read moreItaliana Community Street Fair). It deserves 5 stars because of how well this community event is organized. Plenty of space to stroll around, several dining areas, tons of crafts vendors (more than 100), 3 live music stages, martial arts demos, multiple food stands in every section (never have to wait long for food), beer & wine drink stations everywhere (with REAL glassware, cool!), trash bins every 20 feet, 2 playgrounds for kids, and LOTS of free parking (because it's on a Sunday, although u need to come early to find a spot). The festival includes a parade and Bocce tournament. There's also a car show: 3 sections filled with old cars, renovations/replicas, and pimped up cars on display. Don't expect to find any culinary must-have foods, but if u dislike festival foods (lemonade, kettle popcorn, fried foods, pizza, hot dogs, pastas, beer/wine, and ice cream) u can go into any of the dozens of nearby restaurants instead. New visitors might not know about "Spaguetti Alley", a popular spot for spaguetti with meatballs ($6). They have umbrella covered tables and live performances of Dean Martin songs (I think, not sure.). My favorite festival foods are the fried asparagus ($5), pork kebabs ($7), and grilled sausages ($5). Although I often prefer to have a cheap lunch at a Japanese restaurant instead, like Himawari or Oidon. Good fun for the family! I'll upload my pics later.

It costs to enter this festival which seems to have almost all of the same vendors as any of the other free ones downtown. The commemorative cup that came with the entry fee was plastic and felt pretty cheap. Beers cost $8 each!?!?!? While the selection was wide, they were required to pour into their own 12oz cups and not allowed to pour into the commemorative ones. The food vendors each seemed to have one or two special bacon items. The prices were all a bit inflated. I made a wrong move and bought a bacon hot dog because I was so hungry. It was poor quality and not filling. If you love bacon and beer, I recommend saving your money and going to Safeway or Draeger's.

For an event that's advertised as a bacon and beer event, I was surprised that it had a relatively small beer selection and a reasonable amount of the vendors did not have anything bacon related. The beer they did have was nothing special and there were not too many bacon treats that grabbed my attention. The event had a $15 entry fee, which seemed like a rip off once inside. There does not seem to be many food festivals in San Mateo so I hope this event will improve in the future. Side note: We did try MealBoxesEtc. food truck at the festival, and their curry bacon mac n cheese was amazing!

We lined up at our 730pm check-in time and waited 35 minutes in the cold and were only halfway through the line. We left because it would have been another 25-35 more minutes to get through the line. However, the staff was great and the carnival games were fun. Nice to have all of the thoughtful decorations as well, our child loved playing with all of the pumpkins.

We did not enter the trail until 720pm, and that is after getting in line at 640pm. Just be aware. Which is fine, my family had fun and the actors inside are funny and well rehearsed. However, since we waited so long, we got out of the trail around 750pm. My kid wanted to play the carnival games, which close at 8pm, so we bought some tickets to play, and were out to the carnival by 752pm, they had already taken everything down and had only a few simple games still up. My kid was bummed, but I figured since there were no refunds, I could go back and get a snack instead with my tickets. I was denied and told to come back next week to redeem the tickets. I know this is all for a good cause and it really isn't too big of a deal, but it is silly that I literally bought the tickets within a minute and then walked back after the carnival being closed and then denied to even use the tickets on anything else and then told to come back next week. They were told not to sell any tickets since they were closing up the carnival early, but I guess it wasn't communicated well. I guess we will be back to use up the tickets next weekend...?
