The mirror behind the barber chair in connection with the back bar is a barber "tool," no different than shears, clippers, or the barber chair. It is used by the barber to get a perspective on the haircut from the back of the patron's head. It is easier to tell if the nape area is even when the barber looks back into the mirror, rather than trying to tell from just looking directly at the back up close. Most shops will have other mirrors in the shop for patrons and typically offer a hand mirror when the haircut is completed. As a barber of fifty years myself, this is the answer to those who are wondering why they are not turned toward it. By contrast, beauty salons are used to turning their patrons toward the mirrors, because longer hair usually does not need the same perspective from the back. So it's obvious these comments are from men brought up going to beauty salons.
