She demanded to keep my credit card on file and since I refused made me pay much more than the fee allowed by my insurance. Made an appt. Got an email confirm. A few days before, I needed to cancel, got tied up, and didn't do so. Also didn't receive an appt reminder, but still, not cancelling is on me. I did, however, hear from them when they charged me $110 for the missed appointment. $110. Nowhere in email or on website does it cite that fee. Wow. Just wow. I now (too late!) have read other 1* reviews which also mention this doctor's billing practices. Guess that's one way to make money in a competitive market! I'll be going elsewhere. read more

I had to cancel my appointment as when I called the office to confirm that they accept my insurance, the rude receptionist (who you can barely understand due to a very thick accent) refused to verify that my insurance was indeed accepted. It's unfortunate as she was recommended by my former wonderful doctor, Dr. Sislowitz, who retired. Stay away from this practice. I wish I would have read the reviews prior to attempting to schedule an appointment. I am so glad I cancelled and did not waste my time going to this terrible place. Never even got to meet doctor steinberg as my elderly mother with dementia came late for her emergency appointment with her and the front desk physically opened door to office and threw my mother and aide out for coming late. No offfer to reschedule or wait till later in day. Front desk refused to speak to and subsequently disconnected me the patients daughter who is also a physician to try and reschedule. Was referred to Dr. Steinberg by opthamologist Dr. Sislowitz who retired and refers now to this practice. Will never send my mother there again or refer any patients here. Front desk needs to be trained in better patient care , sympathy and communication. read more

My daughter has seen Dr. Steinberg twice. She said she's very nice. But her staff and her billing were unreasonable.. Dr. Steinberg accepts our insurance. That is why my daughter went to see her. But after the appointment we were billed $325 for something that wasn't described on our receipt nor was it submitted to insurance. We were told that this was a necessary service that wasn't covered by insurance. Hmm...Ok - But what was it? No answer. My daughter last saw Dr. Steinberg in November. We have called and written many times asking for an explanation of the charge. It's June 21 and I finally got one. I checked with our insurance carrier. If Dr. Steinberg's office had given me a CPT code, I could have gotten reimbursed for this service through my flexible spending account. But since they still haven't given me a CPT code that I can submit to my insurance, that's not going to happen. I don't object to this practice, what I object to is the lack of explanation and the rudeness of her staff people. "This is how we do it", spoken in a rude manner. If you're going to do something like this, document it. And don't sneak these fees in and allow your staff to respond to inquiries in such a rude way. read more

Feeling very frustrated - I booked an appointment with Dr. Steinberg and was only informed of a technicality with my insurance not covering the exact procedure when I showed up to the office. This is fine; problems with insurance happen. But I was charged a fee for "cancelling" my appointment late - even though it's not like I didn't show up or anything. My only alternative to this fee was paying an exorbitant charge not covered by insurance, which I wasn't aware of. Found Dr Steinberg on Zocdoc and was very happy to see an "eye doctor" instead of the usual Lens crafter or similar ophthalmologist. Well, that was before realizing that a simple consultation would last 2 hours. To increase profitability, numerous patients have an appointment at the same time and go in for a 5 mins questionnaire, then a 5 mins reading test... Well this way 5 patients are seen without actually seeing the doctor for more than a few minutes. This is a disappointing experience. read more

After having her perform cataract surgery on both my eyes, I think she is AWESOME. I'm a skittish patient and she was amazingly calming and supportive. Went in to see about a possible eye infection and wound up paying $375 for a followup contact fitting + non-covered refraction test which is 3 TIMES what I payed another doc for my far more thorough initial fitting, Would go back for medical visit, but if all you need is a prescription STAY AWAY and save your money. I've had an excellent experience with Dr. Steinberg. I first saw her on an unscheduled emergency visit, after my primary physician noticed an issue (my red eyes and complaints about some pain) she thought should be seen right away. The office fit me in, Dr. S. identified the problem (a scratch in my cornea), and treated it over the next several weeks with kindness, great skill, and professionalism. I've seen her twice a year since then (in my 60s). Always answers my questions, explains things clearly. I'm super pleased. Have not had any of the billing problems some other reviews mention. They take my insurance and co-pay (for which they need credit card information, of course), and that's that. Front office staff is pleasant and efficient. Appointment is usually on time. Occasionally--rarely--it may be delayed, but I figure that's because she's seeing another emergency patient like I was the first time. No complaints at all. Just praise. read more

Dr. Steinberg is by far the best Ophthalmologist I have ever been to. She is brilliant and concise. She is very straight forward which I prefer. I have worn glasses and contacts since 9 years old. My eye sight was extremely poor. She recently did a surgery for me which has made my sight almost perfect. I no longer need glasses and can read the back of a shampoo bottle. Amazing! Erred 2 tines my eyes prescription which cause me a huge loss monetarily bc I ordered a frame with the prescription initially given then another optician told me that axis was wrong and I had decided for a third exam. This does not count the cost visit of usd$ 375.00 zoais in full but after 2 weeks she sent me a bill requesting 176$ more bc she forgot I paid out of pocket . Went there and ask to justify it. I found out I had cataracts a year ago and went to an extremely over priced Ophthalmologists on Park Avenue who needed to see me 3 times before scheduling surgery. Each appointment was ridiculously priced and took the course of 2 hours. I found Dr. Steinberg online and she was on the UWS and took insurance so I went to see her and we set a date for surgery. Prior to surgery she called me on the phone to see if I had any questions to make sure I was comfortable with the process and if I did to contact her. The day of the surgery she visited me numerous times prior to the procedure to give me the step by step which made me feel at ease. She was nothing short of incredible!!! She was patient with the laser part of the surgery which took a little bit because of me and kept me as calm as she could. After being wheeled into the operating room I don't remember a thing until I work up. The nurse and the anesthesiologist where also amazing. Today, a day later I went to see Dr. Steinberg and the vision in the eye she performed the surgery on is now 20X25. It is the most remarkable thing I have ever experience. For every negative review on Yelp I can say I am used to first class Doctors and incredible medical care and Dr. Steinberg falls within that category. The office staff is lovely and Anna the office manager was on her game so I got all my information together. This is a class A practice and if you need cataract surgery this woman is nothing short of a brilliant surgeon. read more

When I first walked in the receptionist handed me forms and told me to please fill them out fast so that she could get me right in. Initially I came for a scratched cornea from my lenses. I was covered for the visit and payed $15 co pay. On my follow up visit, I decided to get a prescription for glasses and contact lenses. She charged me another $15 co pay, $75 for the script for glasses and she wanted $300 for lens script. When I questioned this refraction fee, the receptionist got hostile and said that I should always read what I'm signing that nobody reads what they're signing. When I first called they told me I was covered by my insurance. It would have been nice for them to verbally warn me of their billing process. I paid the $15 co pay and $75 for the glasses prescription. I refused the $300 lens prescription. Of all the eye Doctors that I've previously been to I've never had to pay for prescriptions. I'm sorry that I took the lens prescription . Feeling scammed!!! read more

I waited until I completed my initial appointment and follow-up visit before writing my review, and now that both are out of the way, I am very happy to give 5+ stars for my experience with Dr. Steinberg. I should first mention that I am very lucky to have excellent insurance through my employer - some frustrations of other reviewers seem to stem from more insurance-related problems, but please do not let this dissuade you from seeing this doctor. Even if I lost my insurance entirely, I would pay out-of-pocket to remain a patient of Dr. Steinberg. Here's why: For months I've been complaining about a variety of seemingly non-related medical-ish problems. I'm not a spring chicken, so some of these I chalked up to being a little old and a little passed it. (Cue: Louis CK's 'your knee's worn out'.) My GP knew my complaints and gripes, had 10 years of medical history to work with, but never suggested I see a specialist about any of them. (hmmm, time for a follow-up review for the GP...) On my FIRST visit to Dr. Steinberg (for my annual eye exam), she completed the exam, heard my gripes, and recommended I see a Rheumatologist as my eye problems could be related to the other gripes. Turns out - they are. Turns out - the Rheumatologist she recommended was equally as brilliant as herself. And now, just 6 weeks later, I am feeling the best I have in MONTHS, maybe even years. True, it could have as easily resulted that the problems were not related. Regardless, the fact is this doctor took the time to listen to all my concerns and formulate an action plan to deal with them. I wish Dr. Steinberg could specialize in every body part, but I suppose that isn't a realistic request. So I will continue to see her for my eyes, and thank my lucky stars I found her. She is a true diagnostician and compassionate medical professional. read more

I saw this doctor for a standard eye exam + refraction, and to consult about eyeglass prescription vs. laser surgery. She was short and just blurted that for my eyes laser surgery won't work. She didn't want to take the time to explain why. (When my husband joined me she relented and explained her rationale.) The RX for eyeglasses - my very first vision RX - was incorrect and I ended up spending money getting a pair of glasses that is not right for me. (I went to a neighborhood optometrist that explained why the RX was not well written.) Similar to other patients comments, the office feels chaotic, you spend much more time than you should, the doctor might know to diagnose and treat eye conditions but has a somewhat rude demeanor and does not communicate well. I'd like to make this three-and-a-half stars. The doctor helped me with my condition (blepharitis) and generally has been on time for appointments. She sometimes has space for discussion -- not quite a holistic approach but not just focused on the one problem, either. As other Yelpers have noted, the downside is you must negotiate through certain imperious office staff and this detracts from the experience. One was really rude when I phoned late to cancel an appointment despite never having done so before and I had to send a letter to the doctor to get it solved. It was, but the core issue is interpersonal skills that could use some work. read more

First, I want to say that reading the reviews, I am sure the doctor is great, but unfortunately I didn't even get to meet her. I made a 3:30 appt on a Thursday. The receptionist calls me in the morning to see if I could come earlier. I already requested a certain time to leave work, so I told her I couldn't. I left work at 2:45 exactly and should have gotten there with time to spare but the trains were a disaster and I got there at 3:50. Out of breath when I arrived, the receptionist tells me that she called me to come earlier. I said I know but I said I couldn't. Then she proceeded to tell me that it's almost 4 and she was getting ready to admit another patient any minute. So I said, "you mean to tell me that you would have done absolutely everything in 20 minutes and be ready for another patient if I were to have arrived at 3:30?" She then tried to get me to make another appt. I already requested off work time, so this was all a big waste of time. I don't believe they should have scheduled the "serious" appt after mine or when she called in the morning, she could have explained the circumstance OR canceled my appt. To make matters worse, as I left and was on the train home, I got a message from zocdoc saying the office said I missed my appt. Like really? Ugh! Fortunately this has a happy ending. I booked an appt on 81 street with a wonderful doctor and staff and was seen right away and everything went according to plan. Again, I believe this doctor is probably great, but I am less than thrilled with the staff. read more

Though they warn you, it is true that she bills differently than others. There is a refraction fee of $75 that your insurance won't cover. They also won't give you any prescription until you pay.
