There's a reason all of the sushi plates at Hikaru Sushi are $3.80, and this is it: most of the sushi fillings like Salmon, Tuna, Avocado and others are small, almost invisible, surrounded by a fat roll of gluggy rice wrapped in Nori. After being open for about a week, we decided to try this Japanese newcomer to The Gap, joining stalwarts Sushi Dream and Sushi Maho in the neighbourhood, on the promise of a sushi-train style of experience, but also with the option of ordering ala carte from tables lined with iPads for placing orders for food and drinks direct to kitchen. Apart from finding the tech-side of ordering very fiddly, or just grabbing something ordinary from the train line, the food did nothing to enhance the experience with the sushi rice too moist, the ingredients lacking in size and flavour and wondering if our money would have been better spent (and yes, it would have), at the aforementioned Japanese joints in The Gap - which are all about 250m from one another. We're all for seeing new businesses open in the area but Hikaru Sushi needs to dramatically step-up its game if it's going to be a long-term survivor of this fickle suburb of foodies. Whether the sushi is $3.80 or not, value-for-money is the taste everyone's after. read more
