There were many booths and tables in the dining area. Looked very clean and tidy. Our waitress answered our questions and we made our selections, chicken salad on croissant and a Gyro omelet. The diner offer breakfast all day! The chicken salad sandwich was served on a toasted croissant and was creamy and had a great taste. Such a bustling place! Seems like the whole town knows how pleasant Highway 54 is. Great service with a friendly staff! Waitress was very attentive. Food was hot, fresh, and yummy!! I can definitely understand why this place is busy on the weekend. Would definitely recommend this place in Mexico! Our food was scrumptious - ordered biscuits and gravy, pigs in a blanket (pancakes wrapped around sausage links), veggie skillet, Greek omelet. What a very nice surprise! We were there for Friday lunch and the place was packed. Service was still prompt and very friendly. I had the cheeseburger which came with fries or soup and I opted for my favorite chicken and dumplings. They had an odd yellow color to them but they were delicious anyway. Prices are extremely reasonable and servings are generous. We finished off with lemon meringue pie and cherry pie and both were delicious. We stumbled upon this place on our way to Jefferson City. It's a very popular place with the locals. The prices on the menu are very reasonable and from what I can tell from the other patrons, they are very generous in their portions. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries and my hubby ordered the cheeseburger with a cup of soup.... which was chicken and dumplings. The cup is really a bowl. My hubby said they are good but didn't have much chicken. The bacon cheese burger came with two good full slices of bacon. They toasted the buns just like I like it. The Service was great, but the food we'd give mixed reviews. I ordered the pork chops & my husband ordered breakfast. My salad & baked potato were great, I thought the ranch dressing tasted homemade. But my pork chops were very disappointing. The menu says center cut, but they were more like pork steaks, fatty & boney. They looked good but were tough and not center cut. My husband asked for hashbrowns with a little bit of onion, they were crispy, but fried in oil with the onions on top, not mixed in. This place is good! Pulling into the parking lot I was encouraged by the amount of cars out front, even though it was well after lunchtime. Upon entering we were immediately greeted and tables were pushed together to accommodate our party of 6. The place has your typical diner atmosphere, friendly service staff, booths with vinyl covering and plastic menus. Wow talk about menu options. They offered a gyro breakfast skillet something I've never seen before. I opted with the Irish skillet, which was very crispy and savory. My son had a burger, which featured fresh toppings, including a juicy and tender patty. The only thing I have to say is , people may be overwhelmed by the choices. My husband and I were traveling all day on a motorcycle and was recommended this place. We were seated right away and got our drinks. The menu looked amazing. We were so hungry and were excited to order. Unfortunately another party of 5 came in about 5 minutes after us. I guess they looked more important. We had finished our drinks while we watched our waitress take their food order. Listened to every food exception they asked for. As the waitress started to bring that group their salads is when I finally got up and asked if someone was going to take our order or wait on us. The waitress that was supposed to wait on us looked at another person and asked them if she could take us. That kind of ended it for us. We said we just wanted to pay for our drinks and go. I am sure their food is delicious but I hope you get better service than we did. I guess we didn't look like high paying customers although we are normally big tippers. This was one of the best dinners that serves breakfast. I have never had such amazing pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and bacon. The pancake was huge but I managed to eat it all. The bacon might have been the best part, it wasn't drenched in grease as most restaurants do. If you are ever passing through Mexico Missouri this is what I would recommend. I had stopped here for an easy comfy breakfast. The place looks a bit weathered on the outside, but the inside was well furnished. Came in on a Friday and it was half way full with locals and a few weary travelers giving off the relaxed diner atmosphere. Their menu was comprehensive with a more southern approach to breakfast. I had ordered the sirloin steak and eggs and coffee. The waitress was very attentive and accommodating. When my steak came out it was on its own plate and was juicy. I had ordered it medium and the taste was a bit bland. Not much creativity in the steak but a bit of a1 sauce helped out. Eggs were perfectly cooked and toast was buttered just right. The only small detail that was a bit annoying was the ketchup bottle had built up pressure and slightly exploded causing a bit of a mess. Let's keep it real people. This is a diner. Do not expect James Beard Award chefs here. Once you are good with that, you will really enjoy this place! I come here every time I am in town and this last time, I was here 4 times in 3 days. It appears that they have renovated the place a bit, which is nice. The servers are great and the food is good and plentiful. I generally stick to burgers or breakfast and they are great! I especially liked the Gyro Skillet. Their Tzatziki sauce is good too and reminds me of the mom and pop greek places in Illinois. This is the place to be! The selection on the menu is quite varied, especially when you consider how small the town is. Everything is made fresh. After you walk past the special board, you are greeted by the day's selection of fresh handmade goodies that the owner's wife has concocted for dessert. Sadly most people are too stuffed from the large portions to have room for cake, pie, or cheesecake. Make a special trip for coffee and pie--you won't be disappointed! Be warned, however, Mexicoans love to eat out! The Diner gets very busy during peak dining hours. It's not a place to zip in and out. (Try McDonalds across the parking lot!). The waitstaff is great. We used to enjoy this diner, but it has gone down hill drastically. Our last few visits we noticed several employees breaking quite a few health regulations. Using dirty rags to wipe tables, having that dirty rag in the same hand with clean silverware as they put the silverware on tables. I generally have the fried chicken salad and have no complaints, but others in my party have had complaints each time we have eaten here. Burgers taste "strange", hair in food, etc. The one complaint I have personally is the bacon...it is terrible. Possibly the worst I have ever eaten. Everyone else in my party felt the same. Their menu is extensive for lunch with great looking specials - we just had a taste for breakfast. It's much larger inside that what you might think looking at the outside of the building. Just to be clear: This is the diner where G&D Steakhouse once was; it is similarly named to another diner (on Liberty Street) in Mexico, and to one in Fulton. I do not know if this diner is associated with either of the others. Anyway, Highway 54 Diner has a huge menu of several pages; the servings of catfish, pasta, and salmon are especially large; despite the long menu, everything seems freshly prepared. The vegetarian omelets are made to order (if you can't eat green peppers or tomatoes, no problem), and the drink portions are generous. Sides are of a good variety & well prepared, not just slung onto the plate. This place gets very busy at lunchtime and on Sundays after church. You'll see everybody in town there. Also it is busy on Sunday evenings when families stop on their way back from Lake of the Ozarks or Mark Twain Lake. I'd give it more stars if something could be done about the noise level and if it offered more vegetarian/vegan choices (but there may not be a demand for the latter in an area where meat is king). You won't find friendlier waitstaff anywhere else, that's for sure! Prices: extremely low for the quantity of food served. PIES: I didn't order any pie, but the waiter said the pies are made fresh by the owner's wife, and they surely did look delicious. UPDATE 05-04-12: In response to the one other reviewer ("Roxanne") as of April 2012, I'd like to say that if you have those problems in a restaurant, you MUST tell the server, manager, or owner right away. Restaurant people do not want "bad" bacon or non-food items in their customers' food. (This location has a very long reputation to uphold, and the people who run it are extremely responsive to comment.) NOW FULLY NON-SMOKING! Just wanted to put that in, because I learned it recently. Also recently, I had an opportunity to try the cottage-cheese crepes. Wow! As simple as these sound, they are really something, esp. at breakfast time. Hardee"s serves a better breakfast. The gravy was white, pasty and bland; the hostess said it was a homemade rouge gravy, however, I've had far better packet gravy. The hashbrowns were greasy and bland; a bit of salt would have helped. I ordered onions with the hashbrowns and specifically asked that the onions be well sauteed and the onions were almost raw. The biscuit was doughy and tasteless; it had no butter, yeast, sweet or salt flavor. The waitress, although she agreed the onions were not sauteed, did not concern herself with quality control.
