Love that place! BBQ allowed ! Small compared to some parks but lovely, loads of families around, tennis court etc.. See by yourself !

It has its own ice cream van!

An excellent place to come walking at lunchtime. Walking fast, it takes me about 15/20 minutes to walk around the entirety of Highbury Fields so I quite often do a few laps. This park has ample seating just in case you need a break and also it's very own regular ice cream van, which is awesome. Can you Yelp review an ice cream van? :p At the top end of the park there are a couple of enclosed football pitches which are owned by Highbury Fields School but I believe you can hire them for a spot of football or tennis with your chums. The park has specific dog-free gated areas for those of you yoga bunnies - you don't want a dog sniffing your butt! Or for kiddies who want to take place in a medieval battle (yes, I have seen a group of 3 years olds run at each other with cardboard swords and shields here!). However, there is plenty space to throw a ball around at the bottom of the park. Highbury Fields also have an awesome park for the kiddies and it's very own resident pool, Highbury Pool. Definitely a nice place to walk, whatever the weather.

There are eight tennis courts too and also one astro turf football pitch and one concrete pitch for football and basketball ball.

But then I was the more surprised that the clientele here is actually very diverse: from the teens, who are posing in front of the mirrors in the locker rooms to show off their muscles, the bus drivers working out during their breaks, the house wives gathering in the morning to do engage in chit-chat on the cross trainers, and the grandma from next door who's the most enthusiastic participant in the tummy session... When you join with a yearly membership - which is really affordable - you get a package of personal training sessions, a gym towel, a T-shirt and a water bottle...all this is nothing fancy, but then again it kind of entices you to continue coming. Also, the trainers here are really great, I have to say. What's best about them is that they engage in ever-so-brief conversations with you; they ask you how you're coming along, or when you haven't been there for a while, they notice you coming back and congratulate you on that. This, I feel is great and it makes me feel as being part of some kind of community. Keep up doing the good work!

I have used this pool a lot over the years as a great place for younger kids to gain pool…read moreconfidence and have fun. Its another beach style pool with a tiled island area - perfect for little ones getting to grips with jumping in the water. Much of this pool is really shallow. It has a reasonable wave machine - with a shelf you can sit on and get battered by the waves. Great fun when the kids were under 8 - we came here after school every 3 weeks over a couple of years (we use to alternate with Britannia in Hoxton and Waterfront in Woolwich) - but we have outgrown it . All the kids swim competitively now and the fun here is too tame for them (even with the youngest at 9). It has a really small swim around the island with no jets - just a waterfall that flows over your head as you swim by. A good shower jet for standing under that is powerful and always catches new visitors out as they desperately try to stop the jet removing their swimsuit. There is one slide which is great for first slide experiences....It snakes directly over the pool and is only half tube so if you go fast enough you get to splash the water over the top onto the pool below (and unsuspecting swimmers). Guess I spent too much time here. Main jacuzzi pool was always out of action and the small version was pretty poor. They do offer lane swimming if you want to train after public sessions - they stretch a few ropes across - so many better places to train, not sure why anyone would use this unless they lived next door.. We got to know most of the staff really well - slide was always open and on quiet nights we would get the waves to order. If you are looking to build water confidence in your toddlers or provide fun for under eights then this is great - otherwise travel there are better places about. Showers hit and miss, changing facilities basic and there is a gym. Never used it so cannot comment.

Aquaterra is a not for profit company that's commissioned by Islington council to provide leisure…read moreservices to the borough. They have quite a few places all over islington and my nearest is Archway leisure. Members can also use facilities from other councils at a discounted rate. I've been a member with this group for around 18 months and very happy indeed. Its not luxury, occasionally the showers are cold and there is a distinct lack of polish but it does the job. It costs me a mere £250 a year for unlimited swimming and off peak gym plus discounts on a whole range of things including climbing and squash. The main reason I went with these guys is that in most of their locations they have full size pools with lane swimming, even at the leisure centre round the corner from me and next to Archway Underground; albeit with restricted hours. The gym is as good as any chain and the trainers dont bug you for extra business every few mins unlike the more commercial gyms. The quality of the classes are excellent and the trainers great. I never feel that I'm just a customer, there just to be sold more overpriced stuff. Although its basic people from all walks of life come from doctors, accountants, tube drivers, students, office men or housewives, something thats really refreshing having used corporate gyms! The place is as clean as anywhere (The council places have to be especially stringent with health and safety standards) though I have to admit one has to arrive twenty mins after the kids session ends! On top of that there is an iphone app called "splashpath" that connects to the pool's timetable and tells you when they are open with the sessions they are doing (they change in school holidays) letting you plan and log your swims. So, for the amount you pay, the range of activities, the way you're treated and the convenience it gets five stars. I'd expect more in terms of "luxury" if I was paying the industry average (more than double) but I'm not and I get to swim! This place is officially awesome!
