We explained that we had experience climbing indoors, but had never climbed outdoors nor had we done lead roping -- he taught us the latter, and made the former an absolute joy. Mike found routes for us that were challenging but do-able, gave us pointers when we needed/asked for them (but let us figure out the puzzle on our own a lot of times, which I really appreciated), and even let us run over time to do one more climb. When we got stuck on a route, Mike would climb it and mark good holds with chalk. And, when I took a solid 20 minutes on one route, he didn't rush me or make me feel like a poor climber at all. Overall, a fantastic experience that was well worth the money. We'll cherish the experience for long to come! Note: Aspen Expeditions does climbing tours for level Beginner - Advanced. Mike told us that he has many "regulars" who visit him from all over to climb, and that he'll meet up with clients to climb in Argentina, all over Europe, etc.

My fiancé who is an intermediate skier went to buy boots there because of the famous Jack Rafferty…read more Jack pulled a boot that was the same size as my fiancé's rental boots which fit well. Jack then decided there was nothing more to do, not even heating the shell which was supposed to be molded, and sold the boots which DID NOT FIT. He made ZERO effort to fit the boots. The boots ended up cutting off my fiancé's circulation. I was a racer, I know boots should be tight, but they should not make your feet go numb and certainly not for leisure. Fortunately, Aspen sports did the right thing and took the boots back. However, Jack's ego is far too big. He might be a great boot fitter but I guess he decides to whom he wants to be a good fitter. Will never go there again. We should have listened to the ski instructors and ski patrol who do not think highly of Jack. He only cares about his pros. Go elsewhere!

My visit to Alpine Angling was one of the most disappointing and frustrating experiences I have had in my years of experience. All questions were answered with either very short, generic answers or a finger point in a direction where the flies were generally located. Despite spending $200 on new wading boots, the gentleman was so un-helpful it was almost insulting. We were the only ones in the shop so he was not busy -- but perhaps he didn't like that we were distracting him from eating his burrito. Don't go here -- lots of shops in the area to choose from that certainly will be more enjoyable and helpful than Alpine Angling.

On this most recent trip, the staff at Ute Mountaineer staff exceeded my expectations with great customer service and prompt delivery on their word. In spite of the usual craziness that happens in Aspen during this time of year, I was able to drop off a pair of Scarpa AT boots that had a warranty issue, with assurance from the management that the work would be finished much sooner than I would have thought. Ute Mountaineer had the parts to perform the repair in-house, and I had the boots back before I needed them next. They have a great variety of clothing from a fairly wide range of manufacturers, tons of camping + glamping accessories, the latest in featherweight equipment for aspiring ski mountaineers, an extensive range of maps, and a veritable library of outdoor activity-related books. Ute Mountaineer may be the only store of its kind in Aspen, but don't be fooled by any misleading Yelp reviews about this place. Nit-picky complaints and unrealistic, over-the-top expectations say far more about the bizarre, fur-clad goofballs that frequent this town over Xmas and New Years than it does about the hard-working staff at Ute Mountaineer. I'll be back again next year to see what new back country goodies they have in stock!

I found myself in a situation where I rented one of their bear cans and finished Four Pass Loop after hours. Theres no after-hours drop off or contact information. Not cool when you're renting gear and unknown things are bound to happen. Luckily, the bartender in the bar underneath the store was cool enough to return for me the next day, with a $30 dollar tip. What really takes off the star though is the pretentious and "too cool" vibe from the employees. Ain't nobody got time for that. Being kind and understanding is free.

We also rode a bit of the popular Rio Grande Trail - but it does tend to get crowded. The bikes worked wonderfully and Aspen is an amazingly beautiful place to go explore - especially on an ebike. Highly recommend this place, and it is very close to the bus RFTA.

I say kids because we were the Medicare raft! Dex was our guide - he is nice, polite and very, very helpful. It was our first time rafting and we never felt intimidated or scared. He took great care of us. Schaffer was hysterical and had us all at ease immediately, laughing and joking along the way. The local beer and chips at the end hit the spot for us!
