    Oolong Tea
    Jenny T.

Salmon is my favorite kind of sashimi, so of course we had to make a stop by here. There were various kinds of salmon sushi and sashimi. I split the medium 225 grams of sashimi ($30NZD) with a friend and I also got myself some Oolong tea ($6NZD). They gave us the sashimi right at the counter but for the tea I was given a number to bring back to our table and they would bring the tea to us. Coming from the US, I was expecting just a cup of tea for the price. Instead, they gave me a whole pot of tea. We were short on time, so I ended up needed to chug half the pot and then asking for a cup to take the rest out to go. The tea was great though, and for the price you definitely get a lot of it. The sashimi was nice and fresh. They also supply some wasabi and soy sauce on the side for you but it's definitely good to at least try some of it as it is on its own. The actual salmon farm itself is in the back, and you can even feed them on your own. I love how sustainable this place is, and with the cafe being on site, it also has a very short supply chain. If you're headed or coming from Mt. Cook, I would definitely recommend this as a stop.

A salmon lover's dream! It was so good that we came back twice. And sure, this might be a tourist hot spot, but the whole salmon farm-to-table experience and immersive operations make this place such a unique gem. High Country Salmon is a farm, cafe, and seafood & gift shop combined, including family-friendly activities such as salmon feeding and fishing your own salmon. You can grab fresh sashimi and sushi to-go, or choose to sit down and order their hot kitchen specials (we LOVED the seafood chowder), or even just buy a whole frozen fish to bring home. As sushi lovers, this was definitely a highlight during our road trip to Mt. Cook.

This spot was recommended to me by a friend who lived in NZ for a few years, and as a salmon lover, I knew we had to stop! I had never been to a salmon farm before, and this was quite the operation! They have a store where you can buy smoked salmon, frozen and fresh, and accompaniments; a restaurant to eat onsite, and an outdoor area where you can see the salmon farms and feed the fish - or catch your own! STORE A great variety of salmon, mostly smoked and packaged to take, plus accompaniments like crackers, cheese, and other food related gifts and goodies. Of course, I had to get some smoked salmon, crackers, cheese and chocolate for snacks on the road - and got some salmon spice seasoning kits for my family. RESTAURANT It was busy during lunch time here, and everything looked great! they had a lot of options, but the main one that caught my eye was the sushi options. I opted for a very simple raw salmon roll so I could taste the freshness of the salmon. Delicious! They had indoor and outdoor patio seating and the line moved fast. FARM Outside, you can walk among the multiple salmon farm pools and see them swimming in circles. You can purchase food to feed them, or even pay to catch your own and have it prepared to take home! Now THAT'S farm to table...!

While the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon shop gets a lot of buzz (and for good reason - their sashimi + views are amazing), don't overlook the High Country Salmon shop. They have an incredible selection of smoked salmon, sushi, and entrees. We had the salmon belly sashimi, smoked salmon, salmon sushi, and teriyaki salmon wings. The wings and salmon belly sashimi were the standouts - incredibly juicy and fatty in the best way possible. There is a lot of people/tourist but it is a great stop on your way to/from Mt Cook. If we did this roadtrip a second time, we would go back here and would skip the other shop.

If you want to cook some salmon or eat some smoked salmon this is the spot to do that! The salmon comes individually sealed in different sizes and varieties of marinades. The grab and go market/restaurant is short staffed due to Covid-19 so make sure you check their hours and allow extra time for food to be made.

Excellent stop to try some fresh salmon. Was able to get breakfast and try some smoked salmon eggs Benny and a sushi platter. The star of course was the salmon. Went and got some portioned salmon fillets to cook at home. Wonderful. Coffee was decent too.

If you are passing by the fishery, definitely make a stop, even if it's only to feed the salmon. The fishery provides cups of pellets you can toss into the fish pens. The salmon are large and move quickly through the water as they grab the pellets. They also have a restaurant and plenty of people were enjoying the food when we stopped for our visit.

250gm of salmon sashimi for NZ$20. It was so fresh and delicious! They also offer other dishes, but we only tried salmon pie which is pretty good but is not extraordinary. You can also do salmon feeding with free salmon food.

Definitely make a stop here if you are visiting Lake Pukaki! We grabbed lunch here and got salmon sashimi and salmon roll for a very reasonable price. The salmon was really fresh!! Because it is also a salmon farm, you get to feed the salmon as well.

The salmon bagal & the salmon sliders - for $16!!

Review Highlights - High Country Salmon

A salmon farm is one of the more unusual ones, and if you don't have too much time to stay, just grab some sashimi to go.

For the main course I had the Stone Grill with Lamb which was good (very tender meat). My husband really enjoyed his Hanger Steak. Service: Friendly, efficient Ambiance: Functional, plain. Full stop…read more The slow-roasted lamb shoulder is what my YEA and I rewarded ourselves with after a day of hiking Roy's Peak nearby. It's definitely a dish for two but if you are feeling extra hungry then no shame in turning it into a food challenge for yourself. The meat is so tender and juicy as you easily cut through it. Each mouthful was wonderful. The root veggies were on point and the bacon cabbage medley was crunchy joy. There wasn't much table talk because we were just enjoying the dinner so much and having a "moment". The restaurant is easy to miss because it is on the second floor of a building and you have to look for that door that will lead you up a flight of stairs. The restaurant decor in the dining room is very soft on the eyes and it has this modern minimalist elegance to it. Cheers to the friendly and caring staff. They didn't have any problem when we wanted to switch to another table as the sun was setting and the sunlight was blinding me from the window. Come here for the slow-roasted lamb shoulder, it's totally worth it!

We dropped on a Tuesday afternoon (around 3:45pm) and it was packed. There's tons of different fruit, dried fruit and nuts, vegetables, honey, wines (out through the back entrance) and best of all, fresh fruit ice cream. Seemed like every single tourist had got a cone/cup. It was also nice that you could sample some of the fruits and dried goods. We took advantage and tried a few samples. It's $5.00 NZD for the fresh fruit option otherwise you can get ice cream for $2.50 NZD (single scoop) or $3.50 NZD (double scoop). For the fresh fruit, you can only choose one type of fruit (lame) from the three options (mixed berry, passionfruit and blueberry). You also choose your base (options: vanilla, cookies and cream, hokey pokey, yoghurt and boysenberry). - Fresh fruit ($5.00 NZD) - we went with boysenberry and passionfruit. Lots of seeds; it's the real deal. Boysenberry base was tasty and had a good creamy texture. They mix it fresh right in front of you. - Yum yum plums ($6.60/kg) - we sampled a few of these and they were super sweet. Bought a half dozen for the road. - Omega plums ($4.00/kg) - we wanted to try these ever since we discovered them at the Nelson Market. These were actually cheaper here so we got a bag. If you stop, definitely get a real fruit ice cream!
