We were able to have a picnic and let the kids burn off some energy before getting back in the car for another 5-6 hours. There weren't any sporting events going on while we visited so the park was pretty empty, but I could see it getting crowded with sporting events going on. Pros: The playground was huge and had plenty of play structures to keep the kids entertained for a while. Lots of cute picnic spots overlooking the pond. Plenty of parking. Easy access to I-65. Cons: It was very hot and shade at the playground was limited, but there was plenty of shade by the pond and other locations throughout the park. No bathrooms that we saw, only portable toilets. Lots of ducks and geese looking for food.

It's quite a nice little park with a pedestrian bridge going over the Barren River. It seems to be situated along part of the city-wide bike trail, so I'm excited for warmer weather to take the bikes out for a spin and stop back by! I'm happy to see BG making efforts to have and maintain these parks for the community. Worth a stop by if you're passing through and need to stretch your legs or live nearby and need a break!

Overall: I will visit this spot many times in the future. It's peaceful and wonderful just walking the bridge overlooking the view.

This past weekend, this area hosted amounts in biking and trail running event called The Low Hollow Trail Fest. There's a lot of variety in this trail, with some straightaways and some very technical areas. If you go out, watch for muddy spots (and try to avoid those) as water can congregate in some areas of this park. Also, there is some fishing available as well here. I would warn you not to venture too far into the tall grass if possible. I don't believe this area had been treated and our dog managed to find 15+ ticks out there this weekend. Parking is ample, if you manage to find the right parking lot.

A nice little stop while exploring Lost River Cave Park…read moreAfter taking the boat tour through Lost River Cave, we decided to continue walking along the trail through the valley and stopped at the Butterfly Habitat. It is located along the trail that runs at about the same level as the cave entrance and meanders through a very pretty part of the park. The trail is covered with loose pebbles and gravel, so I would keep that in mind if you have mobility issues or difficulty walking on uneven surfaces. The Butterfly Habitat itself is an unmanned location with a sign out front and a small foyer area that you enter before going through another door into the screened butterfly enclosure. It is not particularly large or fancy, but I don't think it needs to be. Inside, there are plants and flowers that provide a habitat for the butterflies, and we were able to see several different butterflies as we walked around. It was enjoyable just taking our time looking for them among the plants and watching them fly around the enclosure. The screened structure allows you to get fairly close to the butterflies without disturbing them and makes for a nice addition to the other things you can see while exploring the park. Overall, I thought the Butterfly Habitat was a very nice little stop after our cave tour. I probably wouldn't visit Lost River Cave just for the Butterfly Habitat, but if you are already there for the cave tour and are walking the trails, I would definitely recommend taking the short walk over and spending a few minutes inside. Enjoy!
