Consent should be opt-in, not opt-out. Also don't spread essential oils without telling people what's in it because people have allergies. Also not a fan of the wu wu stuff about sensing and cleansing energies with hand movements, which is not even part of the traditional spiritual practice of yoga. I found a better studio in town.

So far I've done Zumba and yoga, but my favorite classes, hands-down, are the candlelight yoga and various other yoga and movement workshops with Michelle Anthony. I've been visiting the Christine Center since approximately 2004 or 2005, and while I wrote a…read morereview about ten years ago, my feelings about this once very special place have changed considerably. When I first started coming here, the Christine Center had an entirely different atmosphere. There was a genuine sense of community, connection, simplicity, and spiritual hospitality. The Franciscan sisters who lived and worked there were very much a part of the experience. They gathered around the dinner table with guests, shared conversations, and created an environment where you felt welcomed rather than simply accommodated. My understanding is that many of the meals were also prepared with the help of volunteers. It was affordable, the food was wonderful, and there was something incredibly meaningful about the simplicity of it all. Sadly, many of those sisters have since passed away, and somewhere along the way, the Christine Center seems to have lost much of what made it so special. The Christine Center has always welcomed a wide variety of retreats, workshops, and gatherings led by different individuals, and that has always been part of its appeal. What seems to have changed is the atmosphere and the philosophy behind how the center operates. I don't know exactly what happened behind the scenes, whether it was a shift in leadership, financial priorities, or the business model, but the difference is undeniable. What once felt like a living, breathing spiritual community now feels increasingly like a business offering spiritual experiences. There is a difference, and for those of us who remember what it once was, that difference is significant. One of the things I particularly miss is gathering for meals in the main building. During my earlier visits, sharing meals was part of the experience, regardless of whether you were attending a formal retreat. On my more recent visits, meals were generally available only when organized groups or workshops were taking place. Otherwise, the option was prepared food that you could refrigerate or heat in a microwave. That might seem like a small change, but to me it represents something much bigger. Sharing a freshly prepared meal around a table was part of what brought people together. Another thing that troubled me during one of my visits was seeing the UN's Agenda 2030 being promoted. While its stated goals may sound admirable, I have serious questions about the broader agenda and its implications. Seeing it promoted at a spiritual retreat center made me question the direction and discernment of the current leadership. I would much rather see the Christine Center focus on the values that once made it so extraordinary: genuine human connection, spiritual reflection, simplicity, hospitality, and community. I also wonder what happened to the strong relationships with local volunteers and whether there has been any effort to invite new Franciscan sisters to live and participate in the community. I realize times change, people pass away, and organizations must adapt to survive. But I can't help feeling that something precious has been lost in the process. I share this not because I want to tear down the Christine Center, but because I remember what it once was, and I genuinely miss it. There was a warmth and authenticity that couldn't be manufactured through programming, marketing, or beautiful surroundings. It came from the people, the shared meals, the sisters, and the feeling that you were part of something meaningful. I would love to see the Christine Center reconnect with those roots. Not everything needs to become bigger, more polished, or more professionally managed to become better. Sometimes the very things that make a place extraordinary are the simple things we gradually lose sight of. I hope the people responsible for its future recognize just how special that original spirit was, because I would love nothing more than to see it return.
