Experience: I've ordered wings out from here and enjoyed them a couple times, but we were driving by and decided to stop in and try the place. I don't know why I expected a divey sports bar from just ordering, but I was surprised at how impressively big and well kept this place was. There was live music on Friday night, and it was pretty busy. I think the food is hit or miss depending on what you order, but I've had mostly good experiences. The wings and croissants are very good, those used to be my go to. The spinach dip is okay. The power bowl with ahi tuna is my new favorite, it's exceptional for a sports bar meal. This chain feels like it's close to the end, after years of steady decline. I've been frequenting this location for a while, I think at least 10 years. They started out with a decent menu of American pub food, and we would regularly eat there, often bringing family for an easy meal. We even booked a Christmas party for a group here. They stocked *some* local beers (mostly via inBev, not true local distributors) and had changing tables for the family in the restrooms (a pet peeve of mine - they actually installed them after we questioned it years ago.) But there's been a steady decline, especially in the last few years. The menu has gotten smaller, year after year. Favorites and sides disappear, all because they "take too long" - like baked potatoes. Then the burgers became "smash burgers" instead of a nice 1/2 lb patty. On the most recent trip, the "two 4oz smash patties" were just regular patties. The Diablo burger disappeared. And the menu was cut again. The new CEO in 2023 was responsible for a lot of this. I'm sure their "test kitchen" was more about speed, cost, and customer throughput than actual taste and quality. Then the chain was sold to a Florida company in 2025. So the Carolina based chain was cut further. Sure, they may have increased the salary for managers, but the quality and menu have been cut. Favorites are gone, or portions cut, or substitutions made with cheaper options. We've seen this happen with other local chains (Fox and the Hound) and sadly, it feels like Hickory Tavern is on its way out. On our recent visit, the crowd was sparse for a "Monday night football" evening. Usually it's standing room only at the bar, but the restaurant was at 10% capacity or less. I was surprised to see the cuts to the menu - I hadn't noticed the "smash burger" substitution, as I hadn't ordered burgers the last few times. But the "smash burger" my wife received was two plain patties, maybe the cook pressed hard on the flattop, but that's not a smash burger. I ordered the honey hot chicken sandwich. What should have been a chicken breast, was 2-1/2 tenders in a bun. Similar taste, but presentation matters, and the tenders kept falling out of the bun. Portions seemed smaller, buns were smaller, and the whole visit was disappointing. If someone went here for the first time, they'd probably think it was "okay", but not great. But knowing what this chain was like 10 years ago makes it worse. My prediction - management will go one of two ways - either fix the menu and bring back quality options, or they'll continue to cut until the restaurant suffers the same fate as similar chains that have gone under, like the Fox and the Hound. But unless they acknowledge the decline and choose the former option, this will most likely be our last visit to Hickory Tavern. read more

I took the team out after work for happy hour and this is a spot that always seems to work for get-togethers. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. We went on a Monday night around 7pm and it was surprisingly busy. They said about 15 minute wait for a table for 4 but seated us in around 5 minutes!! The staff was friendly and attentive. Our food came out relatively quick, and my salad came out correct, but with a strange honey butter biscuit on the side? Not a fan of honey so I didn't eat it, but it wasn't even listed on the menu! Luckily I'm not allergic to gluten, hehe! Everyone in my party loved their meal. My salad was the perfect size, I finished every bite, but it tasted kind of bland? Wasn't sure if it was the ranch that was too plain, or the chicken! Another day I got the crispy chicken sandwich, Buffalo style. I expected some Buffalo sauce but I guess it was just the breaded Buffalo patty. The sandwich was dry, honestly, and I've never once complained that a burger or sandwich has been "too dry." This is one of our "go to" places for good food and beverage. The staff are always friendly and especially the folks behind the bar. We stopped there last night and ordered drinks and dinner. I had the fish and chips (fried cod) and Bethany had the half-price chicken wings. She split her 12 piece order between Bee Sting (honey with heat) and Buffalo. In both flavors, we ordered their "charred" wings. As always, the food was excellent. The cod was perfectly battered and fried. Did not need tartar sauce though it was served. The wings were great as always. If we want chicken wings, we go to Hickory Tavern (on Harris Corners in Charlotte) and get at least one flavor and get them charred. Also want to add that this is a place where we typically sit at the bar. The service is good anywhere in this restaurant (this location) but the bar is informal and it is easy to start a conversation with the bar tenders. Today the Tuesday before Thanksgiving my wife and I decided to meet up with a dear friend of mine from my Navy days. We decided on Hickory Tavern. When we walked through the door we were met with a welcome and a smile. The place was buzzing with sports fans and trivia buffs for trivia night. The experience started out a little rough with the hostess not communicating with our server that she had a table but the Manager Malcolm stepped in and righted things immediately. He offered us a free appetizer for our inconvenience and chose the Supreme Nachos. My wife and I have had nacho's at several restaurants around the area and these nacho's at this location were a solid 10 out of 10!! Don't be intimidated by the Two sided menu - one is just for your delectable foods and the other side for a savory alcoholic option. No draft beer list, but when asking our server Shae, she was able to recommend some suggestions based off of our cravings. We got sat on the "upper deck" which was just a few inches higher than everyone else. A seat of royalty if you will, looking down on everyone else. I ordered the "Wafflewich" - a lightly fried chicken breast resting between two beautifully browned Belgian waffles. My partner went with the wings based off of our server's recommendations. She stated for a sports bar they were pretty good. You're able to tell they're frozen (could be a little tough) but still nice and crispy exterior. The sauce redeemed the wings. Well this used to be a go to for wings for us. We were seated and it took about 15 minutes to even be greeted by our server. Apparently she didn't know her section. We started to order some drink from the bar and was going to order wings and sides. It is wing night. However, now they won't let you order all flats even if you want to pay extra. Server was as nice as she could be about it but said that she has been there about 4 weeks and they will not allow all flats. But you can order all drums. We will not be back. It has been years since I have visited a Hickory Tavern. We opted to visit this location for a late weekday lunch with a party of 6. The restaurant was nearly empty. We were promptly seated. An unfortunate accident led to a change in servers. But this was explained to us immediately by the manager. Our replacement server came over quickly to take our orders. After that, the service was a wee bit slow, especially considering it was so empty in there. But it wasn't a huge problem. Everyone was happy with their food orders. The food was hot and delivered as ordered. Overall, it was a solid experience. I would definitely give them a return visit in the future. One of the best family friendly taverns in the Northlake area. The servers are always very nice and the wait time is very short. The restaurant has bar seating, tall table top, booths and private party rooms. They offer an abundance of flatscreens for sports fans. The food is always fresh and cooked to order and the bartenders make very strong drinks! They changed the menu since the last time I was there. They're removed the crab dip which was the best I have had in charlotte. The spinach dip, pow pow shrimp and mozzarella sticks were amazing. The wings are also my favorite. Held a buffet group dinner for 21 staff and customers. Was given the side room off the entrance. Nice. Ordered wings, grouper, chicken and rice, salad, tots, mac n cheese and cookies. The food was good. Too much really. The chicken and rice didnt go fast but everything else was really good. Grouper and wings went fast. The service was outstanding. We had two people and not a request went unanswered or a drink un refilled. To try and find anyplace that could withstand 21 orders hitting the kitchen on top of their regular orders is impossible. Doing the buffet was smart and the food did not dissapoint. Only wish we could have boxed up the leftovers for the lunchroom next day. Didnt think of it. Lastly the sauces needed lables as people did not know what they were or what went on what. I will be back next year with my group. read more

I came here on a Saturday for dinner with some friends. We got there on the early side, around 4 pm and the place was pretty much empty. However, the space was huge and I loved the vibe. There were multiple TVs playing sports which I love. The service was great, the waitress was very nice and accommodating. The menu selection was typical American bar food, salads, burgers, tacos and they had a good drink selection. The biggest downside was the quality of the food. My friends got the Cobb salad and burger which looked fine, but I got the steak tacos which were not good. The steak was too chewy and hurt my teeth when I ate it and the taco dressing was way too thick and not good. I would come back but definitely not getting the tacos again. read more

We had an impressive experience at the Tavern on Saturday. My wife and I arrived and were immediately seated. After ordering drinks, we proceeded to request the Pow Pow shrimp, cedar plank salmon for my wife and fish and chips for myself The shrimp dish was ordered as an appetizer. Our main courses came out first, but our server explained that they came off the grill first and she wanted us to get everything hot. And hot it was. Piping hot, and delicious. The cedar plank salmon was medium well, just as my wife likes it. It was accompanied by a side of sweet potato fries with a dusting of kosher salt sized sugar crystals that augmented the natural sweetness of the fries with a kick of tastiness. She liked the salmon. She loved my fish and chips... and so did I. The dish was delicate, tender grouper. I had expected a beer battered rendition, but in retrospect I think that type of batter would have been overpowering. It had just the right immersion of breading, fried golden brown and seasoned just right. The chips, however, almost stole the show. I was not privy to the preparation, but they appears to be twice fried... once to make the inside meaty and soft, and again to seal the crisp outside. I can't swear to it, but I think it so. Whatever. They were delicious, and enjoyed every bite. And the Pow Pow shrimp were tasty, hot with a kick and well deserving of the name. A couple of discrepancies: *The aforementioned reversal of entree and appetizer, but the fact that everything was hot made up for it. *The menu called for malt vinegar to be served with the chips, but there was none served. These kept it from being a 5 star review. All in all, this visit made up for my previous one that I'll mention briefly here. I'm a retired journalist, and in that vein I need to offer full disclosure. After a less than sterling previous experience and a rather scathing review, Hickory Tavern reached out to us and invited us back. Thank you. Service was very good until I met the waitress, she lacked personality and emotion! Seemed like she hated the fact she was at work. Waited 30/40 mins for a salad thats Lettuce was wilted and chicken was burned!! My son got chicken tenders (the same chicken) and they were fine!!! Manager on duty did remake my food but after an hour I packed my remade food in a box to go! As I walk out the door I noticed a 96.5 as a health dept rating. Which truly made me sick!
