The Butler Inn didn't meet our expectations . Seemed promising on reviews on google, trip advisor,…read moreand hotels.com but after a stay here ... it just didn't work out. It was nasty.... the first room we got smelled like mildew and the bathroom floor was rotten and toilet was actually tilted and tiles cracking . That lasted a couple hours and could not deal with it. We got a second room and it was slightly better but still uncomfortable. We were exhausted and just wanted to sleep. We decided to deal w the room. The Air conditioner was so loud you couldn't hear the tv let alone sleep. At 3am a raccoon or something big was crawling above the ceiling... my skin was crawling and worst yet found bugs on the bedding then. No sleep and was ready to crawl out of my skin. I travel a lot ... trust me here... DO not stay here.

You might not have a visit to a convent on your bucket list, but if you love history and…read morearchitecture, then a visit to the Sisters of St. Francis Convent is phenomenal experience. The convent stands on a hill in the historic town of Oldenburg. The town is famous for its many church steeples that dominate the skyline. I visited the grounds recently on a beautiful fall day. I didn't know that I needed to call for reservations prior to coming. The Sisters that operate the tours were engaged in social activities during my visit, but offered a quick tour of the grounds. The sisters are knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the grounds and genuinely engaging. The Chapel on the grounds was built in 1889. A historical marker indicates that the "Motherhood of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis was founded in 1851 by Mother Theresa Hackelmeier of Austria." The adjacent Convent once housed 900 Sisters and is one of the largest convents in the Midwest. No surprise that the Sisters are deeply religious and socially active, but I was surprised to find that they are also political influencers. The Sisters, dedicated to education, have helped establish local schools as well as Marion University in Indianapolis. The grounds are beautiful, filled with trees, courtyard gardens, grottos and an immaculate cemetery filled with over 100 years of Convent residents. Guests can call in advance to arrange a tour. The Sisters charge $5 per person for group tours of 20 or encourage donations for small groups. Free street parking is available. Plan 90 minutes for a tour and additional time to walk around. There are several good restaurants nearby featuring German style foods.
