    Invermere Hostel - The kitchen

The Invermere Hostel, in my opinion, is more than a sufficient option in terms of…read moreaccommodations...if you need a simple/basic place to stay and rest your head for the evening. That pretty much sums up my story. I was exploring Kootenay National Park within the beautiful Canadian Rockies and was taking my time discovering the area with no set itinerary. After completing driving Kootenay Highway 93, I ended up in Radium Hot Springs, BC. It was getting late in the day and my first instinct is to search for campgrounds, but I found nothing. Now, there were plenty of motels to pick from in Radium Hot Springs, but for a Saturday evening in peak summer season, prices averaged around $150 - Canadian or $110 US. Instead... On Priceline, I stumbled upon this Invermere Hostel located just down the road from Radium Hot Springs...only 17 kilometers or 11 miles away and prices here was noticeably lower being $73 Canadian or $58 US. Funny, a lot of people would warn, yeah, you're paying much less to stay in a hostel, but you're sharing a room with strangers, and that can be very awkward with no privacy!!! But this is where the whole narrative changed and why I was absolutely convinced that coming to this Invermere Hostel was the right thing to do. Because... When choosing my room, (granted it was a twin bunk bed)...it was a room all to myself!! And that was a huge WIN-WIN situation!! I could care less what type of bed I sleep on but as long as I get to do it on my terms in peace and quiet, I absolutely will consider it a success! I will say that...when I have stayed at hostels, it has been in a room with 4 or 6 or 8 strangers together and having to engage with people I've never met has been uncomfortable. So...finding this Invermere Hostel and having space for my own room was something I hadn't uncovered before...and this fact alone should be good enough reason for anyone to want to stay here! Some details about this Invermere Hostel... - When entering, I walked up a flight of stairs. My room was located on the 2nd floor. - Upon checking in, the host was friendly, introduced me around the hostel and escorted me to my room. - There were 8 - 10 rooms on the 2nd floor. All of them were spread out enough as to not feel like other guests were staying on top of me. - It was very quiet during the evening, and everyone was respectful during downtime. - There were 2 communal bathroom/showers. They were clean, in fine condition with hot running water. There were no time limits for using them. - The kitchen area had utensils and appliances for preparing a meal. - In the middle of the 2nd floor hallway was a giant billiards table and a couch/lounge area with a television. - For the middle of June, I left the window open in my room which had a nice breeze for a pleasant summer evening. - I can't remember if they offered Wi-Fi, but cell phone reception worked well. Overall, I was really happy with my stay. The twin bunk bed was more than adequate. Lol, yes, I slept on the bottom bunk. And I was grateful to have my own, private room. In the end, you'll really never find a place like this Invermere Hostel, anywhere! I got a chance to recharge all my appliances which was a major plus. I had a perfect night's sleep and felt refreshed to continue my adventures the following day. Lastly, located right next door to the hostel was a Dairy Queen Grill and Chill! Of course, I had to walk over and pick up a cookie dough blizzard. That was a no brainer, lol. I highly recommend this Invermere Hostel, located just outside Radium Hot Springs and near the border with Kootenay National Park. You really can't beat the pricing along with having the opportunity to select your own room, even if it's a twin bunk bed. The stay was totally worth it and a great experience.

After booking the rooms, I was sent door key codes for entry to the hostel as well as the room. Rooms and kitchen / dining area are on the second floor, pretty clean and neat although the stove area was really small and cramped, did not work when a lot of people were there. Two refrigerators which was convenient. Room was small, had lockers, and a fan. Beds were alright, kept rolling a bit and creaking though. The door closed super slowly. Bathrooms were clean, showers were really small though and didn't really have space to change, thankfully didn't really see other people while in the bathroom. Wifi information wasn't posted anywhere, asked another person in the hostel for it. Hallway made a lot of echo and sound when people walked by and also from people hanging out in the dining room area, which made for not a great space to sleep. Also, my bank account showed an extra $10 charge from the hostel and I never got notified about it from the hostel itself. I'm guessing this charge came because the laundry door was open and we used the laundry - apparently we missed the sign on the door that said staff only. Well, if it's staff only, why is the laundry room always open? Lock it then and don't send us random charges after the fact.

I chose this hostel for the fact that it was set back from the main busy town of Banff and the look of it. I like the cabin look and the fact it sits back with the trees. I understand that some may or not have means of transportation, which can be a deciding factor, but upon check-in, you are given a three day roam transit pass. Town is probably a good 30 min walk with Incline coming back. I stayed in a 6 bed all female dorm room w/bathroom. Showers are shared but not like it sounds. It is basically a room with one shower stall and a bench. The showers had hot water and were clean each time I used them. Shared just means others can use the same shower. My room was clean, and the bed was comfy. Just a couple of tips for a shared room. Bring a face mask for the light and ear plugs. I kept anything of value in my rental car, but there are lockers provided. Just bring a lock. I ate at the cafe a few times. Food is good and reasonably priced. Service is good. There is indoor and outside seating. I did not go to the bar or use the kitchen, so I can't say how they are. I would stay here again if in the area

There is the main building,an auxiliary building for additional dormitories, and other buildings with more private quarters (that cost more). There's a big, industrial kitchen and a large dining room the fridge is a walk-in cooler with shelving and plastic bins for your perishables. There's a bar and billiards basement pub run by the hostel staff. The common lounge area of the auxiliary building is spacious and impressive! It's a beautiful, cozy zone for hanging out with a fireplace and hot cocoa. The dorm rooms have metal bunks and large, lockable closets for storage of gear and personal.

Our first week was spent on the British Columbia side of the mountains at Big Horn Meadows, which was nice and we enjoyed our stay there. However it wasn't Banff Gate. I guess all vacations depends on what one wants and expects. If you were a golfer then Big Horn Meadows in the scenic town of Radium Hot Springs (also one of our favorites) would be THE PLACE to stay. However, we are not golfers. We are wildlife enthusiasts. We enjoy nature and the mountains. We enjoy balconies where we can observe wildlife wander through the grounds. All of these we enjoyed at Banff Gate Mountain Resort. Because we have stayed there before we expected wooden cabins. We expected clean accommodations, but nothing fancy. Our cabin this year had a new table & chairs for dinning and the balcony was in tip-top shape. We had no complaints about our cabin, which they call a chalet. We were exceptionally pleased with the staff. We were happy with the pool, which is heated and indoors. We enjoyed the outdoor hot tub on several days. We enjoyed the indoor hot tub everyday! Most days the deer came by feeding on the dandelions. We hoped for a bear on property, but that didn't happen. However, one had been removed two weeks before arrival because he became "too friendly" on the grounds and was removed by authorities 250 KM away. We went in May of this year, which is a perfect time to see wildlife and before the crowds become unbearable in Canmore/Banff!
