The station suffers from enormous numbers of school kids and students from Swinburne, but it isn't really a problem until you get onto the trains. The Lilydale, Belgrave and Alamein lines all come through here so to get to another destination you'll have to head further in and then transfer to another train line. During the late nights watch out for crowds around Cheers and Room the local hot spots. I'm not aware of any problems but it's always good to note that there are people drinking in venues close by.

It was incredibly frustrating to have trains on this line cancelled and other trains offering an express service skipping over this station. On the plus side, an uber into the city isn't that much more expensive and they actually show up.

Collingwood is one of Metro's somewhat neglected stations: it's not a premium station so it's…read moreunstaffed, and the Metcard and Myki machines are fairly regularly out of order. The biggest problem with this station (and others around it such as West Richmond, North Richmond and Victoria Park) is that the frequent express trains on the Epping and Hurstbridge lines go straight from Jolimont to Clifton Hill and skip this station and the surrounding ones altogether. This can mean a nearly twenty minute gap between trains (even in peak hour), and if the train is cancelled or running late as has happened on several occasions, even longer. On the plus side, there's a great view from the station platforms of Collingwood Town Hall and Gahans Reserve!

It is actually rather convenient in a way since it allows you to change trains where necessary, especially to avoid the crush at the stations in the city. Actually, I'm not sure how long this station is going to last because there happens to be a level crossing which they are slowly removing from Melbourne. Ahhh. Balaclava. I used to love getting on and off the train at Balaclava station. OKay, not the…read morewalk down or up those long ramps, that could be a bit painful. But getting off at Balaclava always felt a bit like being in a rock video. First a couple of orthodox jews would get off, all dressed in black and wearing those awesome hats they wear. Then a tough old lesbian couple. Then maybe a backpacker or two, and then finally me. And I'd maybe stop for a coffee, listening to the relaxing thunder of the trains passing overhead, and I'd be happy.
